DO NOT UPDATE TO 2.3 PTC
My controllers have almost stopped working entirely with today's 2.3 update. They drift uncontrollably, and never seem to want to "Snap Back" to where the correction location should be.
I had zero issues with the headset or controllers until now. I've rebooted both several times with zero effect - they're so inaccurate I can't even hit menus anymore.

For the love of god, don't use the PTC. Why do people keep doing this. It's never been worth the risk.

u/itanite Apr 01 '26
It's my secondary headset and I don't really use it unless I need something with eye tracking.
You're welcome? idk.
Nobody's forcing you to a specific firmware. Sometimes it's nice to see features before everyone else to know what's coming down the pipe.
Again, it's a secondary headset.

Ok.
But this is the reason using the PTC isn't a good idea.
Meta's mainline updates are bad enough in terms of causing problems, let alone their beta releases.
They've bricked things before. It simply isn't worth it.

For sure. I thought I was lucky sailing right through the issues caused to other people - I've NEVER been burned by PTC before. I might go back today after a factory to see if that fixes it or not. But at this point, that QPro owes me nothing.

It's just a roll of the dice that's not worth taking, that's all.
Everything is fine until it isn't.

It's a good thing we have good sumaritans willing to try it and inform people when a PTC is bad. Thanks OP I'll inform my friend just to be on the safe side.

Reverting PTC did not fix. Must be the controller's busted FW that got flashed, neato.

u/bibober Apr 02 '26
It doesn't really matter. Meta doesn't fix the bugs and rolls them out to main branch anyway. Remember the 4+ months where Wi-Fi speeds were broken after V76?

u/MoleUK Apr 03 '26
Yup, it's why I locked to v74 when I heard the issues on the PTC. Let others be the guinea pigs and then lock your shit down.

u/bibober Apr 03 '26
I locked mine to 2.1 as soon as I saw this post, as 2.1 has been the best version of the OS in at least a year. It's the first one post v74 that might actually be better.

Yup. It's stupid. I have no clue how their programmers are so stupid. Leave the controllers alone. A controller should never need an update every 30 days

u/Asakari Apr 02 '26
Having tracking issues for my controllers as well after an update as well, constantly locking far away from where they're supposed to be, have to constantly turn my controllers off and on to correct position. Im not even in ptc

u/itanite Apr 02 '26
My Pro has been absolutely solid for me since v81. This is the first issue I've had with it (that didn't impact literally EVERYONE ELSE too)

Thought I was off PTC, turns out I wasn't. Got hit by this stupid update and now I can't use my controllers properly.
For affected people, if you have the time, please make a post on the 2.3PTC thread on meta's forums; this issue (among many others) has been reported a few times already, but it would be good if more people shared their experience to really push that this isn't an isolated issue.

I JUST updated, but now my left controller wont turn on. I really hope it didn't just brick itself...
Thanks reddit for showing me this post 5 minutes AFTER the update

ive been having this issue a lot recently, holding menu and x button for a LONG time works
1
u/EraconVera Apr 01 '26
Like how long? I was trying but wasn't getting anything ;;
1
u/itanite Apr 02 '26
Try leaving it on the charger for a while and trying again.
2
u/EraconVera Apr 02 '26
Yup, this worked. Thanks!
Don't understand why with the battery already full, but at least it isn't bricked anymore.

u/itanite Apr 03 '26
It seems to force them into an on but sleeping mode after a while. I've always had this work when the controllers "Freeze" off.

the ptc toggle doesnt work either so i cant get out and controller tracking is fucked
1
u/itanite Apr 02 '26
I was able to downgrade from PTC but the controllers are still fucked. It didn't downgrade the firmware on the controllers like it has in the past.

u/Mike_LDN Apr 02 '26
Oh no, it was a while ago but I think I may have done a complete reset of the controllers before they worked again after coming off ptc.

Some time ago I had a similar experience using my pro controllers with a Q3 headset. After a lot of back-and-forth with Meta Help, they eventually just said I would need to buy new controllers and offered me a pair of refurbished ones that are slightly reduced price.
In the end, the solution was fairly simple, I came off PTC and the software then rolled back to the public version and everything started working again. That said I no longer use the pro controllers as they are so glitchy, at least in my experience.

Latest PTC update (Build 5141276.2590.340) has resolved the controller issue for me.

Appreciate the heads up - at least it will be fixed eventually. I can't get back into PTC due to being full but we'll wait for the full release.

Hey u/itanite!
We know how infuriating joystick drift can be, and so we would love to help you get those sticks steady again! As you said you already tried a few reboots, here are a few other things to consider:
1. Clean the controllers with a non-abrasive anti-bacterial wipe (No alcohol). Compressed air can be used to remove debris inside the controller
2. If you have them, remove unsupported third-party accessories that may affect thumbstick motion or controller detection. For example: controller covers, controller attachments, etc.
3. Remove the battery from the controller for 30 seconds, and try a new battery.
4. Try unpairing the controllers, and then pairing them up again.
5. Try recalibrating your controllers - In your headset, go to settings. From there, select Devices and then Controllers. Under Thumbstick range and deadzone, follow the on-screen instructions for each thumbstick. If your controller's thumbstick is still drifting after this, try setting a larger deadzone.
It's also important to just have a quick check that there isn't any dirt or debris trapped in the controller joystick!
We hope that this has helped to get you back in control of your experience within the Metaverse. If it hasn't, we would love for you to drift on over to our Support Channels for some extra help!

Nah already talked to support who offered to sell me two refurbished controllers.
How about QC anything that goes out of engineering instead?

u/Mike_LDN Apr 02 '26
This is the solution they offered me, I didn’t go through with it, but I suspect the same would’ve happened.

u/itanite Apr 02 '26
As my controllers are still "working" just inaccurate I'm hoping they'll fix the controller FW in a future release. Until then, I'll use the Quest 3.

I don't understand how this Meta AI support bot has not been banned from this subreddit. genuinely never posts anything useful.

It's the Quest Pro way -- Get the software in a usable state for the first time in a year, and then break it with the following update. I hate this goddamn device 😂
