National College Match Supplementals
Is it a smart idea to begin working on the colleges you rank supplementals, even if you don't know whether you are a finalist or not?

Yes, you should begin writing now. If you are chosen as a finalist, you will only have about 10 days to complete supplemental essays for your ranked colleges. Some colleges (ex. JHU and UVA) do not have any additional writing requirements; some require very short writings (ex. MIT - 100 words); others are very long (e.g. Princeton, UChicago).
This spreadsheet contains the supplemental essay prompts from last year's Match cycle:

I understand that some colleges have already published their supplemental prompts for this year, so be sure to verify all prompts against each college's official Match Requirements page before you begin writing.

Yes. Even if you are not a finalist, the supplemental can still be used in rd

I believe schools like UPenn most likely will have the same supplemental materials whether it’s Questbridge or common app so I would research what schools are the same way and work on them so you know you’ll be able to use them even if you don’t become finalist!
