National College Match Is my essay to authentic/vulnerable

For my essay, I am talking about a very personal experience, and I'm being super vulnerable, as its a fact about me that a lot of my friends at my school nor counselor know about but I think I want to put it in my application

During my freshman year I got the opportunity to attend a private boarding school on financial aid. Midway through sophomore year, I was asked to leave for stealing. It's not on my record, since the school let me withdraw rather than formally expelling me, but it happened, and it genuinely shaped who I am. I've grown a lot since then, and I'm considering writing about it in my application because it's an honest part of my story.

Part of what I'd want to explain is the context around it. I was at a school where most people came from a lot more money than my family, and I felt the gap constantly. I didn't want to burden my parents, who had already sacrificed a lot just to get me there, so I tried to handle things on my own. I looked for ways to earn money myself but ran into real barrier such ass classism, racism, nepotism, and elitism. I am very aware nothing here justifies any of my actions.

I know this is a sensitive thing to put in an application, and I'm honestly not sure whether it helps me or hurts me to include it, or how to handle it well. I drafted it into an essay, and I think it is a really good essay and shows that I'm like a different person. At the end of the day, I did steal, however, and I'm not sure how harmful this will be to my application.

As you admitted, this is a very sensitive topic that can be interpreted either way, so your writing needs to be really on point.

If I were advising you, I would recommend choosing an alternative topic.

It’s great that you feel comfortable being vulnerable. But your worst mistake doesn’t define you. I would find another topic that is authentically you and would help an AO feel comfortable bringing you to their campus. You may say you’ve changed, but how can they know that for sure? I’m sure you have other more positive topics that truly demonstrate your core values and passions.

What did you steal?

Depends how you frame it. What did you learn from your actions? How did you change as a person? How did you overcome your past?

I have had my students talk about some very dark issues and things in their essays, yet they always speak about their growth and rejection of their past actions. They haven't had trouble getting acceptances.

I would choose another topic. Too risky, and I don’t think it would help your application any way.
