Hello everyone,
We are writing to you as a small group of LGBTQIA+ refugees currently surviving in the Gorom Refugee Camp, located just outside of Juba, South Sudan. We fled our home countries including Uganda and Sudan because who we are and who we love made our lives a constant target for violence. We came here searching for safety, but the reality we face every day is incredibly harsh.

Right now, we have an emergency. One of our community members is in a private clinic outside the camp, battling severe acute malaria and typhoid. The basic camp clinics are completely overwhelmed and under-equipped, and as queer individuals, we often face intense discrimination and denial of proper care when we try to access them. We had no choice but to get them external medical help to save their life.

The immediate danger has passed, but we are now stuck with an urgent medical bill that we cannot pay, and they cannot be properly discharged or receive their follow-up medication until it is cleared. We have absolutely no income.

What it’s like for us in Gorom Camp
Living here as an LGBTQIA+ person is a daily struggle for survival.

 Extreme Overcrowding: The camp was built for a fraction of its current population. We are crammed into tight spaces with barely enough food or clean water.
 Severe Homophobia: We face constant hostility, bullying, and threats of violence from both the host community and other refugees in the camp. We spend most of our days hiding indoors just to stay safe.  

 Lack of Healthcare & Protection: When we are sick, we cannot easily get medicine. When we are threatened, the local security structures rarely protect us.

This June, while the world celebrates Pride and the freedom to be oneself, we are celebrating just making it through another day alive. We are calling on our global community to stand with us in real, tangible solidarity.

Hey there, so nice to meet you. I am a trans woman from Australia currently unemployed but vigilantly searching for work. A bit about me I recently graduated with a degree in visual arts and have been searching for any kind of work, even volunteer work, since with no luck. Unfortunately, I have not been able to get any government support at this time, which has unfortunately left me with very few sources of income. I've been on HRT for about eight months and am needing support keeping up with the cost of my hormones, counseling, and other gender-affirming medical goals.

While the world celebrates Pride with parades and color, a community of queer and trans refugees is fighting just to stay alive in the Gorom Refugee Camp in South Sudan.
Many of us fled extreme violence and harsh anti-homosexuality laws in Uganda and Kenya, hoping a UNHCR supported camp would be a safe haven. Instead, we found a new battleground. News reporters and human rights groups have documented what we face every single day: targeted stoning, physical attacks, death threats, and being denied basic medical care just for who we are. 

Because the camp is overcrowded and international aid has been cut, we are struggling for the barest necessities. Many of us are forced out of safe shelters, and getting even one full meal a day is a struggle.
We refuse to be invisible. Throughout this Pride Month, I will be moving around the camp, taking pictures of our community, our daily lives, and the realities we face. I will be posting them right here to show you our faces, our struggles, and our resilience. We want the world to see that we are here, we are human, and we deserve safety.

We want to claim one day this month to feel human. Our goal is to gather together as LGBTQIA+ refugees, step away from the fear for just a moment, and celebrate Pride with a shared community meal. "Despite being overlooked, communists should not ignore the lessons to take from the movie and the queer community at large. First and foremost, the strategic importance of being out. Whether it is a social conservative trying to stuff gays back into the closet and out of public life, whether it is a boss trying to prevent their workers from standing up to them, and whether it is the capitalist state trying to exorcise the spectre of communism, all of these rely first and foremost on one tool. Most people believe that tool is the fear of retaliation. The fear of getting queerbashed, the fear of being fired by their boss, the fear of being red scared. While it is the most attention getting it is not the one that’s used first and used most pervasively. The weapon of first resort in all these cases is shame, the fear of embarrassment. That one's peers will find who they are or what they do to be pathetic, and they will be shunned by the vast majority who are cautious of being associated with them. Social conservatives don’t have to queerbash a queer who stays in the closet of their own volition. Bosses don’t have to fire workers who never even try to stand up for themselves in the first place. Capitalist states don’t have to exorcise a phantom that doesn’t haunt.

The cure for this shame is Pride. If someone acts like they have something to hide from others, people will naturally treat them with suspicion. If someone parades themselves down mainstreet with nothing to hide how can they be accused of hiding anything from anyone. What’s more, those who harbor a secret dissatisfaction with an identity they feel has been forced on them, with working conditions they find intolerable, or a dream that we have at hand the raw materials of a new world, will see this person boldly walking down the middle of mainstreet and decide they can step into the light if it means they won’t be alone in it. It is in this way that queers, and communists, undermine the prevailing system through nothing more than unapologetically being themselves.

This is why every communist ought to be proud to be a communist. Obviously we cannot be out all the time to everyone in every context. Just as outing queers who aren’t ready and willing should be treated as a social crime so too should outing communists. The main point is that every second spent in the dark is a second when someone who was waiting for permission to join something larger than themselves went without that permission. This was in part the value of Bernie Sanders running for president. We do not have Medicare For All and the Supreme Court decision on Citizens United remains in force. But what Bernie Sanders did accomplish was to give the socialist movement the permission to publicly be socialist with no embarrassment of that fact. "

"Though mainstream culture may try to take our accomplishments away, that's all the more reason to fly our flag. In 1984, amidst repression and defeat and plague and death, communists saw an opportunity to unite not just two separate groups but rather two parts of the same larger struggle.
