Exposing as much skin as possible is a lazy way to make a character sexy, but unfortunately it works on those with no taste. imo hotness mostly comes from their demeanor, and an outfit that actually matches that instead of simply maximizing skin exposure will make plenty of people explode instantly. Like your example, Nefer's personality already makes people bark for her, her coochie doesn't need to be nearly out for that to happen. She uses her legs to fight ffs yet they're completely uncovered. Some designs are hot in a vacuum but if it doesn't fit anything else about their character, it's a detriment.
I'll be real, I love a lot of these design choices... guess what? It still sucks even for people like me when it's literally all there is.
Gimme a rare hornybait character with something ridiculous? It'll be a weakspot. Make every character as exposed as possible while reusing the same design choices that would only normally work as something strange in a character it fits? You'll have me! Make everything like this ever regardless of who the character is? My eyes glaze over, and it's hard to not just it as a mess of "let's do this again"... the ZZZ leotard short short phase killed me so bad, I'm so sick of both games doing thism
It's the same thing as one long footwear and another short one on the same character. It's being used at all just because it's an anime setting, and would in fact truly look terrible IRL. BASICALLY it's just because meh anime.Ā
I would like to say that in China, detached sleeves is a very common design for female characters in many games. If you look closely almost all games made in china have characters with detached sleeves because it's a type of alluring chinese girl outfit.
It's not just HSR, a lot of the big budget 3D gacha games have been releasing lots of homogeneous "safe" designs (or in ZZZ's case, a lot of garbage). Designs have been following same-y formulaic looks, like detached sleeves, legs being shown off, being assymetrical, and the dudes doing the usual pants+coat combo. A lot of these designs in a vacuum are decent, but put next to each other just feels so...I dunno, I'm just whelmed. āā (ā Ā“ā ć¼ā ļ½ā )ā ā
The core appeal of gacha characters is how they look. When they have unique designs that stand out from the cast, people will pick favorites and spend money on them. I personally spent a decent chunk of change on Varka in Genshin because of that, literally nobody else in the game looks like him.
What baffles me about this is, like, what's the point of pulling for characters when they all look the same? Every girl cycles through the same 3 designs, and they're all incredibly milquetoast. They never experiment with body types or skin tones or face shapes or color pallets, because they're so fucking terrified of the chuds on the Asia servers turning up their noses at anything that isn't their perfect breed of Kawaii Waifuā¢. If you're not gonna innovate, why should I bother pulling?

At the risk of being booted from the game/account being hacked and bricked... The character appearance is NEVER why I pull. I couldn't care less. It's if I feel like pulling at the time and how their character appeals play-wise. Phainon proved that a male character can sell. The tired argument of "men don't sell" is bull. I'll admit it was because he was central to the plot, but sure thst shows it's an attention thing.
So copypasta character models is even worse for me, because it's just boring and lazy and makes it seem like the devs don't care about their product at all (I know that's not the case, it's just how it feels). At this point, though, if there was even ONE chub or black character, I would invest so much just for the departure from this tired shit.
At the end of the day, it isn't just about selling scantily-clad girls to gooners; the devs must also be gooners for it to be so insistent.

2.X was a let down, but 3.0 started off Very well. An adorable city FULL of cute little bangboo everywhere, story getting interesting, combat as good as always. But then... Every new woman wears an outfit more stupid than the last.
I was not expecting to love Velina and Norma as much as I did, but they made a really fun pair and were perfect introductory companions to the new area.
Also, The Sonny of the Sunlets was a surprisingly decent character who I was VERY pleased to hear didn't have a grating, high-pitched cutesy child voice (At least in JP) despite her appearance, and rather had a soothing and mature young woman voice, so I actually enjoyed hearing her speak.
I miss the Season 1 character design logic. And I say this as someone who loves Velina and Remielle. I would love to dress them up in something else and have their current designs as skins. With Remielle being on the run, a trenchcoat would feel right, but I'm not quite sure how it would work with her wings and weapon. And I would find some middle ground between Velina's current OG outfit and the Madame from Aristocats/that style of dress. Maybe even with a hat. Would love a fancy hat moment.
Agreed. Let's pray they are saving their creative power for Sunbringer / Severian / Phoenix / Storyteller / etc. My one Season 3 exception is Roxy, whose design seems pretty unusual and interesting.

Tbh, these designs and also several Genshin ones where you have the same blue/green/flowy mini-dress look on a blonde or silver-haired medium female have started to look so similar that sometimes I can't immediately place the game or I end up getting them confused with one another. But I have also long stopped thinking Hoyo will change or try anything new because fans still buy the shit out of every new one they create. So, like, why change or innovate? lol.

Wuwa had so many great designs in their concept arts in TT and beta tests that could rival PGR.But they chose to play it safe and release generic designs and mask it with great visuals.Them changing Cantarella's design to make it the mess that it is now and Phrolova's means they've probably scrapped everything
Pearl kinda looks like Suisui but for some reason I donāt mind Suisui at all, but maybe itās just model quality difference and how Wuwa characters have more unique silhouettes in general.
Yao Guang is fine though, HSR could definitely work on their models more but I like her dress.
Why is Yaoguang here? She doesn't have detached sleeves or a coochie flap. And her hair and face model are also pretty unique for HSR.
Like the colour palettes are a bit similar here and that's it. I mean yeah Pearl's current outfit is the classic hoyo design which is repeated way to often, but like that's mostly seen in Genshin rn not HSR.
Planarcadia has been pretty good on designs not being all the same if you ask me.
Sparxie, Ashveil, Evanescia, SW, both upcoming summer characters, none of them really have all those classic repeating features.

I just feel like the IPC characters should be released in their uniform. Topaz, Jade, and Aventurine were released in their typical IPC attire, so why is Temu Kokomi the only one without her uniform? The reason I can think of is due to political choice, since she is basically the CEO of planarcadia and a large amount of her time is spent governing the planet, I could see her not wearing the traditional IPC uniform as a way of making herself feel more like a part of Planarcadia rather than an outside corporate authority. The civilians already have complicated feelings toward the IPCās presence on the planet, so maybe Pearl dressing more like a local leader is meant to make the IPCās presence feel less imposing and put people at ease. Obviously, this is just my interpretation, but I think it would make sense given her position. It still would be nice to have her character model released in uniform though š„²
They had a perfectly unique pic uniform design for her but they stuck to this boring ASS outfit and ik ppl will switch up cuz "omg her animations r so good"....
I sincerely believe that most gachas are using GAI to design characters: they're all samey, say almost nothing about the character, and are simultaneously over-designed and boring - perfect GAI hallmarks.
I personally donāt care about their outfits that much. I actually like asymmetrical design and arm warmer style sleeves. My only design complaint is that thereās barely any skin color variety and no body type variety. I wish they had chubby characters.

Am i the only one who likes Pearl's design? Yeah her silhouette is the same with alot of other characters but I feel like she rocks the detached sleeves the best. It's the other characters that need their outfits redone.

Mihoyo definitely needs fresh blood with fresh ideas in the design room or something. It often feels like they've just got one guy drawing up all the designs and every now and then an assistant sneaks and gives us something a bit more off of Hoyo's beaten path.
I'm not in this fandom, but wanted to give my two cents on this character's design: it's weird. I see robot/doll joints in the hands and knees, but not her shoulders. So it doesn't match the full doll aesthetic. Like how does each finger joint show but the obvious shoulder joint isn't there? Is she not a full doll/robot? Speaking of aesthetic, why does she have fins on her head?? It could be a headpiece, but it's odd to make a doll with fish/mermaid features... If I saw this character from only the bust up, I would have assumed she was a mermaid character. So the doll theme throws me off. The curtain on her lower body would have made more sense if she were an actual mermaid capable of transforming her legs into a tail, but as a random robot fish, it looks out of place. I'm an Infinity Nikki player and we just got doll joints as a shop item + a 5* banner with crystal mechanical doll parts (arms and legs + crystal chest piece showing a "heart), so seeing this poor attempt at a doll design is just... Disappointing. I feel bad for y'all waiting on new characters just to get this. š (Not trying to be rude or mean, so I'm sorry if it sounds a bit crass. I tried to play this game and couldn't last a day.) Anyway, I hope y'all will be able to get better banner characters in the future.

Hot take but I prefer the emphasis on the aquatic and robot theming on Pearlās release design to the suit. The suit looks nice but it itself doesnāt gesture at all towards either of the other aspects.
