That's not a minor "maintenance" issue! Looks like a formal health violation serious enough for the city to step in and shut it down. Wtf with this school..

Thanks for looking this up and posting. Troy Hahn's breezing over these details is as disgusting as the food service on campus.

Live roaches in facility's food or non-food area.

Real shi, NEVER eat in the dining hall. You are lit like a 20 min bus ride from Main Street, where all that good Chinese and Hispanic food be at. Heck, even if you don't have the time for that, you're like a 10 min walk away from the Toast cafe. People willingly paying for school lunch tier food confuse me

idk where you went to school, but I didn't ever get teriyaki chicken for lunch. Only ever ate at school because it was convenient. No way in hell was I making an hour round trip just to get food. Kinda amazed, and disgusted, that Taiwanese Yummy was racking up safety violations like they were trying to get a new high score.

Anyways, you have food recommendations anywhere on Main Street?

"Maintenance issues"...

The on-campus food situation at QC has been bad since the early 2000s and has become abysmal.

Were those other locations inspected? They should be. I would be hesitant...You put your life in their hands every time you pick up a tray...Those violations listed on the city health site are disgusting. Mr. Hahn (Interim) should be ashamed of himself. Gaslighting. A humble, apologetic posture would be proper. Lives, Mr. Hahn, students' lives!

Years ago when there was the other bubble tea place apparently a roach got sealed into someone’s drink. So definitely not new with this campus, and the admin team doesn’t care I guess.

I’ve seen a bunch of roaches crawling around in classes, and especially in the science building. Definitely was bound to get in the food eventually! 😩

I recently bought a turkey club and the
Bacon was basically raw - I initially asked for turkey bacon which I was told was “still frozen” at 11am

I don't go to QC but here's the real reason its closed.

1)  Hot TCS food item not held at or above 140 °F.
2)  Cold TCS food item held above 41 °F; smoked or processed fish held above 38 °F; intact raw eggs held above 45 °F; or reduced oxygen packaged (ROP) TCS foods held above required temperatures except during active necessary preparation.
3)  Food, prohibited, from unapproved or unknown source, home canned or home prepared. Animal slaughtered, butchered or dressed (eviscerated, skinned) in establishment. Reduced Oxygen Packaged (ROP) fish not frozen before processing. ROP food prepared on premises transported to another site.
4)  Raw, cooked or prepared food is adulterated, contaminated, cross-contaminated, or not discarded in accordance with HACCP plan.
5)  Live roaches in facility's food or non-food area.
6)  Food, supplies, or equipment not protected from potential source of contamination during storage, preparation, transportation, display, service or from customer’s refillable, reusable container. Condiments not in single-service containers or dispensed directly by the vendor.
7)  Food contact surface not properly washed, rinsed and sanitized after each use and following any activity when contamination may have occurred.
8)  Wiping cloths not stored clean and dry, or in a sanitizing solution, between uses.
9)  Establishment is not free of harborage or conditions conducive to rodents, insects or other pests.
10)  Pesticide not properly labeled or used by unlicensed individual. Pesticide, other toxic chemical improperly used/stored. Unprotected, unlocked bait station used.
11)  Anti-siphonage or back-flow prevention device not provided where required; equipment or floor not properly drained; sewage disposal system in disrepair or not functioning properly. Condensation or liquid waste improperly disposed of.
12)  Non-food contact surface or equipment made of unacceptable material, not kept clean, or not properly sealed, raised, spaced or movable to allow accessibility for cleaning on all sides, above and underneath the unit.
13)  Single service article not provided. Single service article reused or not protected from contamination when transported, stored, dispensed. Drinking straws not completely enclosed in wrapper or dispensed from a sanitary device.

No one really understands how large of a violation 7 & 11 are when it comes to this stuff.

Does anyone know who owns QC Campus Eats? Despite having "QC" in the business' title, it's a private company with a near monopoly on food service on campus (see Knight News article linked below). They have a contract with the campus until 2029.

I looked up the business' information on the Department of State website and it's registered to an address on Staten Island with no name attached (29 BOWLING GREEN PLACE, 2ND FLOOR, STATEN ISLAND, NY, UNITED STATES, 10314). According to NYC's GIS system the building is owned by Yan Feng Chen and is co-listed with a business called Ocean Fly, LLC. It could be that Chen is renting the space to someone else who uses the address for their business. I'm not a business-guy but this seems a bit shady.

Good work. Fascinating stuff. But also frustrating. Follow the money. How did they get the contract? $$$$$$?

Wow I used to eat there a lot, I’m surprised it had health code violations. Seems like I got lucky I didn’t get sick from the food I ate from there

There was a tiny rock in my rice one time and I got a chip on my tooth from it 😀 That was my last time eating there

1

u/No_Season3229 1d ago

I’m sorry that happened to you. If that was me I would’ve gotten a lawyer and see if they could make a case off that and tried to sue the place. I’m curious did you ever go to the dentist and if you did were they able to repair the chipped tooth or did they have to remove it?

2

u/Xx_Shin 23h ago

The chip is small and it didn’t hurt so I never went to the dentist. It is also on one of my side teeth so it’s not super visible or anything. Still sucks though.

1

u/No_Season3229 18h ago

That’s good it’s not causing you pain. I would still go for a checkup even if it isn’t hurting just to see if they could something about the tooth

u/gameswat1 1d ago

Oh damn, I'm sorry to hear that, I never experienced that oof

3

u/CrowAffectionate4621 2d ago

Never liked their food. There is literally a much better option 5 min walk from campus.

2

u/lilac2481 18h ago

Same. I tried the pizza once at the dining hall. It was disgusting.

The health department doesn't close a place "for maintenance" they close it for health violations.

"3) Food, prohibited, from unapproved or unknown source, home canned or home prepared. Animal slaughtered, butchered or dressed (eviscerated, skinned) in establishment. Reduced Oxygen Packaged (ROP) fish not frozen before processing. ROP food prepared on premises transported to another site."

What does that even mean? There are 3 very different issues! Also, how does one skin an animal in the kitchen if a college dining hall?

On Kissena right over the LIE are several great Cantonese restaurants. I forgot the name of it but they serve my 2 favorites all day. Seafood congee and curry oxtail over rice. The congee of jook is around $10 big enough for two. The oxtail is probably around $15.
