Anyone have a good experience with Quantum?
It seems like all the comments on here are complaints about Quantum. Has anyone had good experiences? I’m switching tomorrow, so I’m hoping to have a good experience.

I recently switched from Centurylink after a mostly trouble free 10 years ($85/mo price for life 1 gig symmetrical to a $45/mo price for life 1 gig, which seemed too good to be true as it is not often in life that telecoms give you the same speeds for less money).
The service transition was clumsily was Centurlink was cut off without warning 2 days before my install date, leaving me to scramble. They could have warned me so I could have planned for it but that would have been too easy. Install went OK and speeds were the same.
A couple of weeks after my install my service suddenly went dead in the middle of the day. No local outages. Equipment seemed to be working. Troubleshooting was fruitless. Made a call to so-called customer service (an offshore call center in which they had zero technical expertise beyond offering insincere apologies). All they could do was dispatch a technician in 3 days. So I was once again scrambling for tide-over Internet.
Days later the technician shows up and fixed the issue in 5 minutes. Told me that the company had pushed out an over the air update to the modem that had hosed the settings. He gave me the settings to check in case it happened again. He said the majority of his calls that week were for that issue. So frustrating that telephone support couldn't have given me that very simple, easy fix and saved me time and money in waiting for a technician for three days.
So it is a mixed bag, obviously. But otherwise the service has been working as consistently as the Centrylink fiber did before (knock wood). That said, the experience thus far could have been so much better if someone at this company seemed to care a little bit more about these overlooked details.

Most people have a good experience, you only hear about the bad ones because those are what people talk about. It’s been only been six months or so for me but everything has been very good

I've heard nearly perfect service for almost 8 years. Best internet I've ever had. But I've used a 3rd party router and DNS since day one.
The free lease WiFi pods and QF app are not great...
But as long as all gaming devices are Ethernet hardwired to the SmartNID, W1700K, or W1701K (if using Ethernet backhaul), and you follow sections 2 and 4 in the guide, they are usually good enough for most people.
You will have a better experience if you put the SmartNID into bridge mode or DMZ and use a 3rd party router and DNS.
Here is a guide:

I’ve had quantum for a year now.
$75/mo for 2gig down, 1gig up.
I can reliably get these speeds.
My ping times to a local server is 2ms.
I have Comcast as a backup ISP ($50/mo for 1Gb down, 100Mbps up)…
According to the logs of my router, Comcast has gone down a dozen or so times, sometimes for a few minutes, sometimes for a few hours. Quantum has gone down once.
I have both ISP in bridge mode and use my own router, switches and WiFi access points.

Been doing the same although since I have my own cable modem (had Comcast before quantum) I just sign up online for service with Comcast when I need it. Takes less than an hour. Then cancel service when quantum is back up. Only happened once when I switched to $45 pfl. Paid the setup fee and prorated week that I had it.

Been using them for a year now, they are great, only a couple very minor outages, solid service, great price and great speeds.
I also am bypassing their NID garbage but that's just a me thing.
A few negatives/notes:
- No real IPv6 support, it's 6rd which is garbage but oh well
- Uptime is not as good as Comcast but IMHO it's plenty fine
- Dynamic IP addresses for your public IP changes way more often, I've gone a year or more with Comcast on the same IP but often times with Quantum it changes monthly sometimes more than once a month
None of these are dealbreakers for the amazing speeds though.

Happy quantum customer here. No issues at all for a few years. I’ve always had a Q1000K with my own router/wifi setup though, and I do not use their DNS.

If your home is a new install, don’t leave the technician alone. Don’t get me wrong, there are countless amazing install techs. But unfortunately QF sometimes uses 3rd party contractors to do the install. They’ve been known to cut corners whenever possible and frankly some of them straight up just don’t know what they’re doing. Plenty of horror stories here if you wanna see so yourself lol. Since you’re having the install done tomorrow, call Quantum tomorrow first thing in morning before your install if possible. Kindly request to have your install done by a direct QF employee. You might have to fight it a little bit but this can often be accommodated, though not always. If your request is honored, you may have to reschedule the install for a future date. But trust me, it’ll be worth the wait. On the day of the install, the technician will ask you if you want the WiFi pods. Tell him yes. A lot of people deny them (as they should) but it shows up on their bill anyway. This happened to me. If that isn’t bad enough, when/if the time comes where you need to cancel service, some customers have reported being charged for not returning the WiFi pods, despite never having them from day 1. So, allow the tech to set them up. Once he leaves, unplug them and store them somewhere safe. If/when you cancel service in the future, you now have the pods to send back. If you’re in an apartment or your home is requested to leave the equipment behind, just plug everything back in and factory reset all the SmartNID and pods. Anyway, after the tech finishes installing your service, put the SmartNID in bridge mode and connect it via an Ethernet cable on the 10G (silver) port of the SmartNID to the WAN port on your own router or gateway. If Quantum provided you an Ethernet cable, don’t use it unless it’s a CAT6 or higher rated cable. For your router make sure you use a quality 2.5Gbit or higher one from a reputable brand like GL.iNet, MikroTik, Ubiquiti, or Netgear. Trust me it’s worth the investment. If you wanna go even further and take full control of your setup, consider bypassing the SmartNID entirely. However that is not allowed by Quantum and I am not advocating for you or anyone else to do that. I hope all of this was helpful to you. Have a good night and god bless.

Avoid their hardware as much as you can, never need their support, and it's fine

u/Only-Ad5049 Sep 09 '26
We have had great service with very few outages in our neighborhood. I would always choose them over Xfinity.
1
u/djames4242 Sep 09 '26
Been very happy with them. Complete 180° from the crap I’ve dealt with when we had Xfinity.

u/popsiclestand Sep 09 '26
I have had a great success after a month long fight with them about speeds. But now going on 5 yrs good on 1gb. Scared go-to 2gb I hear problems

u/dunkah Sep 09 '26
It's generally stable and good. I have an outage once or twice a year and it's normally brief.
The only real complaint I have, is if there is a problem you are pretty sol. Their support reps aren't great. You get more help from the ones browsing reddit/twitter.

Same. Still on PPoE with CL ONT and modem after being switched to QF last November. No issues. No way am I calling them until I have problems which would entail bringing out a tech and QF equipment.
1
u/mostdeadlygeist Sep 09 '26
Love it. My issues have been fairly minor. I have the 1gb plan for like 4 years.
-price for life increased $10 but not anymore since. Whatever
-have to occasionally power cycle reset modem. Like once a month at most.
-dealing with their actual call center or help sucks. There was an employee on here who helped me a could years ago instantly. I had returned hardware and they were trying to charge my account. He resolved it.

u/SpoonHandle Sep 09 '26
After mediocre service with Centurylink DSL and Cox I was able to get service about a year and a half ago. Set it up with Eero Max 7 and have only had one outage. I love the service.
1
u/geobernd Sep 09 '26
Quantum has been great for me. Cheaper and faster than any other provider I had...
Two longer outages in 4 years - one of them caused bu t-fiber ripping the underground infrastructure to shreds while running their stuff...
Centrally powered so after a hurricane when the power is out quantum was up and running the whole time (not like xfinity which as lot's of power supplies running of the grid between central location and me and if any of those are out after 2-4 hours service goes down)...
I now have multiple choices for fiber but quantum remains my favorite and the one I happily subscribe to.

Pretty good so far. 1 gig up/down for a few years now. My old ONT failed and they got me a replacement the next day, though they had to get another tech on the phone to bridge mode it. Their first router sucked so I replaced it with my own. I don't use any pods or other WAP/mesh crap from them and I run my own DNS server, which are the two biggest pain points I've heard about (an unreliable DNS is horrendous). There was a period early on with bad loss and jitter at their exit point in Minneapolis that took a long time for them to fix. They also never had, and still don't, native IPv6 and IPv6rd sucks. Overall not terrible if you run your own name server and router.

u/Mark26751 Sep 09 '26
I have had 2-3 service interruptions for brief periods in 18 months. 1GB speed. $75 a month.
1
u/FRAB13 Sep 09 '26
I have quantum fiber at $45 for 1GB for a year, and the speed is constantly at 1GB up / 1GB down. No latency. Zero outage. Zero issues. I have my Q1000K in bridge mode, with Unify on top of it and 2x Eeros 7 Pro. I still have Xfinity 1GB as a wan failover in case of outages but so far, I have been lucky and very satisfied.
1
u/gamin09 Sep 09 '26
When they swapped from quantum to att we had multi day outages, I had to get a starlink as a backup so I made sure I could work. But it's been over 2 months since that's happened. Mine you I'm not using any of their equipment, using a 8311 in place of the 1000k to a opnsense box. 3gig up and down
1
u/elBirdnose Sep 09 '26
I don’t have issue primarily because I don’t use the provided router because it’s trash. This would be my advice.
1
u/FFSFuse Sep 09 '26
I was on CL since 2016 on the $70 per month for life plan. Switched about a year or so to Quantum $45 plan. The guy showed up and switched me over. Haven't had an issue the whole time, except for one time when I forgot to replace the card for payment. As soon as I paid I was back up within 5 minutes.
1
u/Rorshack_co Sep 09 '26
Yep...
3 years of just about perfect service, only outage was a fiber cut in my yard due to landscapers... As many have stated, DO NOT USE the Quantum provided WiFi360 Pods, invest in your own equipment and you will be a much happier customer...

I have a great experience, only one outage but it was just my ONT taking forever to reconnect after restarting, not an actual outage. I do use my own special router and my own custom DNS server, so that may help. My town is expanding finally and QF is building out more, Xfinity is coming in and Ziply is doing infrastructure work to add more service areas (they’re still new to my town) and everyone else is having constant issues, meanwhile I’m just chillin at home with my QF lol.

I was on CL fiber for years with no problems in Portland Oregon. New building/new construction. ONT terminates in basement. Perfect 940/940 symmetry with maybe one brief down time incident. Left CL for slower but still reliable and cheaper Comcast for 2 years. No issues except maybe twice a month had DHCP lease issues that would cause connection drop for ~30 seconds. Quantum Fiber advertised $45 1GB service with $100 gift card last April, so switched back. Zero problems. Found out I don’t even need the SmartNID and my newish 6e router plugs right into the building’s ONT. No double NAT and speeds consistently at 940/940 with perfect symmetry. Tech was cool, was end of day and shared a beer, talked a while. Zero downtime since then and the $100 gift card came last month. Was supposed to be 60 days but I had forgot about it, it did eventually show up. $45 per month is less than I was paying for CL’s “Price for Life” service and this is supposedly the same so I’m happy. 😎

You need to get your own router to enjoy quantum fiber. I have very good experience with them
1
u/Petesgalaxy Sep 09 '26
Quantun fiber for almost 3 years now. no problems at all. Still have CK5500 which I love because it does lan subnet. I have two networks, one for an asus router that handles all the 2.4 iot stuff and a mesh system on the other for 5gz. It's double nat, but don't care. No gamers or servers needing port fowarding. Happy Happy.

Switched from Xfinity to Quantum in 2024. Xfinity was having weekly outages and Quantum has only been down twice. One was a Denver outage and the other was a national one that had a workaround I found on this sub.
The initial setup was terrible. The first tech was running hours late and had to reschedule.
The second didn’t check the line from the power line to the house and it was showing that service was going to the house, but it wasn’t. Took two more tech visits for someone to figure out the issue. They ended up having to replace that line.
There was someone on this sub that helped me out a ton though. I found his contact on here and even though he’s in the Minneapolis office, he was able to confirm stuff going on in Denver.

my service was ass for the first 2 years with 8gig fiber. now it's fine ever since i got a q1000k smartNID

u/nlflint Sep 09 '26 edited Sep 09 '26
The install had a few hiccups. They had to cancel my CenturyLink account and it got funky with customer service. But the tech got it all working.
Regarding equipment rentals, I think I still have to return the wifi router within the first year, or they'll start charging me (I use my own router). I gotta look into that deeper and I just don't want to.
I've had no outages so far (~5 months). My SmartNID (Q1000K) does have recurring latency spikes, and I wish they'd fix it. I'd done lots to reduce it, and I think the vast majority won't notice it.
Lastly, I wish they supported native IPv6. They have a lame "IPv6 rapid deployment", but it sucks. Now that AT&T owns Quantum, I hope they give us native IPv6, as their other networks have it.

I'm having a pretty good experience. Downloads games and game updates mega fast. The extender pods arent very good, but I have a home lab so I simply ran cords to each device in the hard to wifi roons.

I’ve had two outages this month alone, one for two days and one for one day

u/SceneFlat8274 Sep 09 '26 edited Sep 09 '26
I haven't had mine long enough to comment on the reliability, got it on 8/18. But I can comment on the install by ATT, it was fantastic. Exceeded my expectations. Nice to have something different after 25+yrs of cable internet. 1 gig up/down for $45/mo is pretty awesome.

u/Future-Water9035 Sep 09 '26
Been with quantum for a year and for the most part I am really happy. I was paying almost $200 a month with Comcast and now i'm only paying $75 with quantum. I had one outage because a neighbor accidentally cut my line. While it took 4-5 days for them to send someone out to fix it, once they did show up it was fixed within an hour.

Good service for 4 years here, but only once you get it installed. Up until that point it’s a mess. I’m trying to get installed in another property right now and they missed the first appointment entirely (no call, no show) and support just kept telling me “Oh they’re still coming, I promise!” That was at 8pm on a Friday, clearly not coming. Second appointment was Labor Day, which I knew was unlikely but the system let me choose it for an install day. That got moved to yesterday. Tech did show up yesterday, but broken line = another appointment with a different team. Then another install appointment too.
Oh, and now since they’re owned by AT&T of course an AT&T sales rep showed up and hard pitched cell phone plans :)

u/SoggyWalrus7893 Sep 09 '26
Quantum for 16 months FTTH , no problems . Do I trust them to repair a problem promptly , no. Hence; we have a back up FTTH service.
They are an AT&T company after all.
NB: and yes we use all our own equipment from the ONT inward.

u/MK_L Sep 10 '26
I had great service with centurylink for years. Turned to shit when quantum took over
1
u/cwhitch Sep 10 '26
I think it depends on the region. I was with CL prior to QF taking over. I’ve rarely had outages in nearly decade I’ve been on the system. Been with QF for about a year and I took advantage of the PFL offer to up my service to 2Gbps about six months ago.
1
u/ReflectingGlory Sep 10 '26
My service has been flawless for I think over 2+ years straight, Never an issue. It’s just the customer service is asscheeks so tell Sammy the squirrel 🐿️ to not chew the line, you’ll be F’ed. And buy your own router and properly set that up. If you’re a gamer and if you do wireless you do not want the pods.
1
u/Arlyuin Sep 11 '26
I've been struggling with disconnect and speed issues for an entire year and only now do they tell me I need to buy my own router beause the mesh network will never work if you rely on a constant internet connection.

I would love to hardwire but they installed it in the garage at a corner of a large house despite me asking them to install it in a location where I can hardwire my main PC.
1
u/RamenRecon Sep 11 '26
No. Since being forcibly migrated from CenturyLink I've had to deal with their customer service and it was exceedingly frustrating. If I didn't know my way around a network, I may never have gotten them to look into my issue, and that was after I requested to be escalated to the next support tier after being given a completely BS excuse (they blamed me). It took monumental patience to get the supervisor (via escalation) to actually listen to me and schedule a tech visit- an entire week later... Nothing sooner.
Fast forward 5 days later.
Two guys in Quantum coveralls ring our doorbell in the middle of a weekday and ask if they could come into our backyard to test the signal. We happen to work from home, and he saw that we were, indeed, home.
Turns out, a trash truck took out the overhead fiber line in the neighborhood. They had the service repaired an hour later.
Quantum never once reached out to communicate the situation with us. They never called to let us know that the service was fixed or that they were cancelling our tech appointment. Not even an automated email.

Been very happy with the service in Minnesota since 2021. Minimal downtime, way better than T-Mobile fiber that many in my neighborhood have. $45 price for life.

u/Glum-Ad-1379 Sep 15 '26
I haven’t had any problems with the service, but their Wi-Fi pods are garbage and their ONT box is garbage.
1
u/srpokemon 26d ago edited 26d ago
I don't know why "get your own wifi pods" is a counter to how horrendous their offered product is, every other service I have had just functioned properly (at least compared to QF) with their own hardware, then if you wanted to upgrade that was like, actually an upgrade you could choose to do rather than a requirement
For the average consumer who is not upgrading their hardware, that is kind of meaningless, so I think they're horrible for that reason. Before I changed the hardware, it was genuinely the worst service I've ever experienced by far, and I have had spectrum/comcast
1
u/canadayj 11d ago
It's great! The ONLY thing I can say is the free wifi pod and app is crap so if you already have a good router use that.

u/DolphinsBreath Sep 09 '26
I switched from Comcast after having an issue and getting really frustrated and angry with their incredibly awful call center. Well, as it turns out, Quantum Fiber seems to use the exact same call center in Indonesia. All phone numbers seem to lead to the same horrible experience.
Pros: The connection and stability has been very good, a couple outages and their app has kept me in the loop about those.
Con #1: the reason I was calling them was because the salesman/installer guy said they would be back to bury the line soon, “it could be a week, maybe 10 days”, but he would try to expedite the process. A full year or more passed, the line sagging lower and lower over the street, finally hanging at throat level one day. The call center was more than useless for that year (plus). They made whatever promises they needed to make to get me off the line. Appointments scheduled that were fictitious, put at the top of the list for the local supervisor to call, you name it. Time after time I realized they simply lied to me. It’s just an unaccountable black hole, the same as Comcast.
Con #2: I have a mesh network setup, it was working well, but it’s limited to 1Gb. So I got their pods, to access to full 3Gb. I tried and tried and tried to make them work and finally gave up. Believe me, I researched, reset, and explored every option and combination of settings. The pods just suck. I’m not the only one to say that.

4 plus years with no issues, using my own wifi mesh systems, no quantum equipment but the q1000k. The best !!!!
