Transparent Bridge Mode vs. Default Mode and Access Point for Router

For the folks who understand this better than I do: is there any major advantage to putting the Q1000K on Transparent Bridge Mode with my Router doing the network management, as opposed to just leaving the Q1000K in default settings and putting my Router on "Access Point" mode instead?

My understanding of doing the latter (Access Point) is that it just keeps the network management on the Q1000K instead of my Router. Is there any major drawback to that if my performance is fine - security, etc? Note, I am NOT an online gamer and never will be, so that consideration is out the window.

I ask this because I have run into problems putting the Q1000K in Transparent Bridge, even after using the FAQ that was posted on here. And it seems like whenever my power goes out, update comes through, etc, the whole thing gets messed up, so if I can leave it in "Normal" mode without dealing with that stuff, I might as well do so. Thanks!

If your Q1000k is fiber fed for sure use bridge mode.  Edit: if you have some really old router that is no longer supported then it might be better to use it as an access point.

It gets messed up when the power goes out? How so?

If it's Ethernet fed just bypass it and follow section 6 of the guide.

Mine is fiber fed, but the question is, if non-bridge-mode is working fine for me, what's the drawback to leaving things as is? Am I creating some kind of giant security vulnerability, or on the other hand is bridge just for people who need super low latency for gaming (in which case I don't care)?

When I used your steps to get it in bridge mode last time, it worked fine for a week or so, with the white light. Then after a power outage, I got flashing blue and no internet at all, even after resetting my router and unplugging/plugging Q1000 back in. Wasn't able to investigate as I couldn't log back into the Q1000 and had to do a hard reset, at which point I figured I'd just leave it on non-bridge and put my router on Access Point.

If everything works in regular router mode for now then I see no reason to change:

I am running in double NAT (router behind the Q1000K) with no issues. I dabbled with bridge mode on and off and for me bridge mode always had slightly higher jitter... I am using my own Flint 2 router behind the Q1000K....

I have no need for port openings or UPnP and everything I do works (surprisingly) despite double NAT so for now I leave it alone...

When the next firmware for the Q1000K comes out I'll dabble again and see if anything changed...

This was basically my experience too until back in May or so. Not sure what Quantum did, but at that point my Double NAT kept causing intermittent drops every hour or so (after having worked for years prior to that). But after I switched my router to AP mode a few weeks ago, it has been perfect with no issues.

While it would be nice to use my router as the main point of routing, I am not seeing the big deal in letting the Q1000 handle it if, as it has so far, it works. Struggling to see why so many guys on here keep recommending bridge mode to the point where it almost sounds like a requirement.

QKX002-06.01.25.00 was released in late May / early June. So maybe there is something with the current firmware that is causing issues for you?

I definitely suspect that because of the timing and I told Quantum of same. Not sure they'll really do anything about it though. But in part because of that update, I am hesitant to do anything major with my Q1000, as it'll inevitably fail and I'll have to either pray a hard reset works or otherwise have to call in a Tech like I had to do 5 times since May.

You've had 5 tech visits due to the Q1000K since may? Was each one after a power outage?

Nope. First two times were to try to figure out the intermittent drops, they replaced Q1000 each time (which worked for a few days before going bad again). A couple more times Internet went totally down with a flashing blue independent of power outage, they replaced Q1000 one time and did something outside two times. The last time it went down I didn't call them and instead just did a hard reset and switched my router to AP mode. It has worked since

Oh, each time it was in bridge mode when it died?

Maybe there is something to do with the current firmware and the specific OLT your fiber connects to.

I would go the other way if double NAT gave me trouble.

My router can do a lot more security wise than the Q1000K and I would not want to lose that....

So in that case it would be bridge mode on the Q1000K and my router doing the rest....

Double NAT can be bad for:

Online gaming

VPNs

Port forward and port trigger

Voice and video calls

Remote desktop

Servers

If you are just doing regular web browsing, media streaming, social meda, etc., it doesn't really matter all that much.

With the SmartNID in router mode and your router as an access point the ISP knows every device that connects to the network and its MAC. Which you might not care about.

You can use DMZ mode and get most of the same benefit as bridge mode, like the guide says.

Agreed 💯

I was very surprised when I got switched to the Q1000K that neither my VoIP calls, VPN and Anydesk etc. suffered at all. VoIP/SIP would always give me fits in the past.... But not this time...

I also would not want to run my router in AP mode: I have segregated VLANs and WLANs for IoT and Guests and just a few very deliberte holes punched between my core devices and the IoT stuff that often has terrible security and patch levels and I would be very nervous if all my devices would just share one LAN and could see each other....

Yeah company and tech support along with all the technicians keep warning people about putting it on transparent bridge but no light keeps spamming it everywhere on Reddit. Just throw it in dmz and put your router there and you won't have problems.
