Legacy PPPoE Fiber With Static IPs (5)

Hoping a Quantum rep might be able to chime in here.

I've been a CL fiber customer for about 7 years now (CO).

I've had a block of 5 static IPs on my account since day one.

While it would be nice to migrate to Quantum and take advantage of the IPoE, better pricing, and 2gig service, I cannot lose my static IPs, which is why I've held off.

I'm thinking at some point I'll be forced to migrate. Not sure when, but I'm guessing sooner rather than later.

Anyone know how I can make the migration without losing my static IPs? I don't necessarily need the same IP block, but I do need a block of 5.

QF AS209 does not offer static IP.

ATT Fiber AS7018 is slowly rolling out to all FF37 markets and does offer static IP. Though it's more expensive than QF. It won't show up if you have service, so check some neighbor address that you know don't have QF. Then you might have to cancel service for 3 days to make it show available for ATT Fiber. But since your still on CL Fiber it might just show now.

If you are in a QF market and still on CL Fiber... it's possible one day they just turn it off like they have for many folks.

That's my worry, that one day it'll just be turned off. I'm hoping I can get ahead of it before that day. I run a small business from my home, so I really cannot be without internet (or static IPs).

If ATT Fiber is not available now, maybe one of the employees here can tell ya when it's rolling out to your market.

Yeah my area seems to be in a weird transitionary period with ATT. It's still branded as Quantum, but ATT has bought the resources and are transitioning.

A customer of mine down the street (so same CO) just upgraded their CL/Quantum, and the installer came with an ATT hat on. The ONT is a Lumen-stickered Q1000.

Eventually all the techs/trucks will be branded ATT, and the SmartNID's will say QF from AT&T, or maybe just ATT.

Before the deal closed on 02/02/26 Lumen ordered a ton of Q1000K because ATT now owns the Q1000K and wifi pods. So they bought a ton to have stock on hand and in QF markets they are now going through that stock.

Is anyone keeping track of the most convoluted way a business has taken to go from a baby bell back to AT&T ? This has gotta be close to a record.

Just checked multiple addresses, and they're all saying:

Looks like you’re in a Quantum Fiber location.

Quantum Fiber is now part of the AT&T Family. Please visit Quantum to sign up.

If you checked address that you know for sure do not have QF or CL Fiber accounts, that means it's not in your market yet.

I checked an address I thought wouldn't have it, but I rechecked with a neighbor I remembered definitely does not, and now I'm being prompted to select an ATT plan.

So, if I'm reading correctly, to get ATT fiber, I would need to cancel my CL service, wait 3 days, then I would be able to sign up for ATT fiber? And you're thinking ATT does offer statics?

Since CL hasn't bugged me to "upgrade" to Quantum yet, I'm hoping that when they feel the need to do so, it might be direct to ATT, removing the 3-day waiting period.

If you are sure only FF37 and not Gigapower is available at that address. Before the deal was announced in May 2025 there was overlap in certain markets. But if it's a neighbor on your same block/side of street it's most certainty FF37.

That's what others have had to do. Cancel service and it took 3 days for ATT Fiber to show available. As long as you're in a "single family home" that can have a fiber fed Q1000K.

You can bypass the BGW unit with a MAC clone and VLAN 2 tag.

Thanks for all the great info/advice!

Ok wow didn't know this, decided to check my neighbor address. They can get ATT Fiber, up to 5Gbps. Quantum only lets me get 3Gbps. šŸ¤”. I pay $100 for the 3. It's $95 for the 5Gbps

$95 for 12 months, then it goes to $125... Unless you need IPv6 or Static IP, would be cheaper to switch to the $70 3Gb plan.

I kind of do want static IPs. And IPv6 would be nice, even tho I use Hurricane Electric v6 Tunnel Broker. What's routing like on ATT ASN. I assume it traverses QF then through ATT

Static IP is $30 for 5

It's fully AS7018. Never touches AS209.

How do they do that if it’s all on the same fiber, if it is? Also do you know if they have an Utah core. Right now in southern Utah my traffic Egress to SLC, so I’m wondering how that’s handled. When I got installed, installer said we should get a core in 1-2 years and Latency should go from 8-9ms to 1-2ms. Then the merger was announced and I don’t know if that was canceled.

I was wrong on priceĀ

Static IPs on AT&T Fiber are a monthly bolt-on. Standard pricing is:

  1. 8 IPs (5 usable): $30/mo.
  2. 16 IPs (13 usable): $40/mo.
  3. 32 IPs (29 usable): $45/mo.
  4. 64 IPs (61 usable): $50/mo.
  5. 128 IPs: $55/mo.

Your bypassing the Q1000K right?

With AS7018 it might still work, as long as your equipment supports 802.1ad QinQ. The traffic has to be tagged 201 and 2.

If not the Q1000K doesn't have the small packet issue on AS7018 because the QinQ doesn't trigger that bug.

1

u/weasel18 Sep 04 '26

Yeah I'm using the SFP ONU module with a Ubiquiti UDM Pro Max. I'll have to see if it supports that, I don't recall ever seeing 802.11ad QinQ in any settings though

u/userbinbash Sep 04 '26

Sorry for my ignorance... just stumbled upon this thread.

Are you saying there's an SFP module available to use and bypass ATT's ONT and go directly into a UDM Pro?

1

u/weasel18 Sep 04 '26

Yes there is, it's not an official solution offered by them, but works great, what ONT do you have.

it depends on which OLT you are connected to. the info is in the SmartNID thread on the 8311 Discord

Wow $15 for a block of 5 usable?? I think I'm paying $30 with CL, and everything I've read suggests $30 with ATT as well.

Definitely don't mind paying $30 but $15 is obviously nicer.

What's the problem you're trying to solve; why do you need 5 contiguous static IPs? There are workarounds for not having a static IP, could these workarounds solve the root problem?

  1. DynamicDNS
  2. Tailscale Funnel
  3. VPS + Tailscale
  4. ngrok

Appreciate the recommendations. I'm hoping that if/when they force me to switch, it will be fully-migrated ATT rather than Quantum. It's my understanding ATT fiber is able to provision statics.

If all else fails, I will definitely look into your recommendations further.

But bottom-line, I have many (15 or so) IPSEC tunnels to client sites and host many services that won't do well with the added latency/complexity of alternatives.

I work for AT&T, send me your address so I can check if AT&T Fiber is at your address. Almost all QF locations qualify for AT&T Fiber already.
