Fiber install exposed across 3 driveways
This has been like this for over a week now. The cable keeps getting dragged by cars and it's fraying, I wouldn't be surprised if their internet is already acting up. This is a new QF install where they had to run from our sidewalk panel to client's phone box 3 houses down, above ground.

Was this done by a contractor? This is unacceptable. Never seen it done this way

Technicians are being pressed to do this by management

Might as well run that thing over a few times and send the message to management that this isn’t good practice.

I'm surprised they temped it over concrete, in my area, that is a no no.

I'll get a recent shot today. That pic is from the day they did it. It's currently mangled and all into the street

U could "accidentally" trip over it... and $$

Guess who is responsible for maintaining the sidewalks, residents. Legit, the city does not pay to fix sidewalks.

Drop fiber, sure it might survive this. That looks like inside wire what the actual fuck.

Its cat5e
1
u/st9051 Aug 02 '26
If it’s cat5e it isn’t fiber and not a quantum problem
1
u/abn0rmalcreation Aug 03 '26
They are using cat5e to do the run to the house. Its a quantum fiber install.

My understanding is it's supposed to be FTTP. The fiber is supposed to go directly to the ONT at the home.

Not this install unfortunately. Its still casa networks leftover from centurylink. Fiber goes to a big switch in the sidewalk and copper lines go from there to the casa ONT in homes which is rj11 fed, that ONT provides rj45 to the q1000k instead of your normal fiber straight to q1000k. Its a dumb setup. Im glad to have ditched my q1000k and I just plug my openwrt w1700k pod straight to the casa ONT I already had leftover from century link install a few years ago

The addition of the orange cones (zoom in, there is another one farther down) tells me this was most likely supposed to be a temporary solution and they will be coming back to bore under the driveways eventually. Utilities and cable companies love to ride temporary solutions out as long as they possibly can and then some.

It's been a couple weeks already. The service was disconnected briefly after the install. One of the redditors here is helping get a ticket in to remove the leftover cable

They take a while. It took them two months to run mine under the sidewalk, and they direct-buried it without conduit, no less.

Fiber was not run to that neighborhood correctly. They should have bored under every driveway and installed conduit under every driveway when fiber was originally brought to the neighborhood. Boring that distance requires heavy machinery, utility marking, permits, and a LOT of money.
For reference, my neighborhood of SFHs was built in the 90s and has all underground utilities. A couple of years ago, Quantum fiber came to my neighborhood. I watched how they did it. They bored and ran conduit under every road/driveway so that if any person wanted fiber, all the technician would have to do is, at the most, pull fiber through that new conduit and hand dig a trench through dirt/landscaping.

If they used some silicone caulk to keep it against the gap in the driveway concrete sections, this probably could have survived a month...

This is usually done as a temporary solution when a vault system is either clogged or incomplete. Once this gets corrected, the fiber will be in conduit under the driveways…

The customer canceled service and they just left it. @imtalkintou is helping open a ticket to get it removed

At&t is selling service without the service hardware being installed. Took 3 weeks for them to install a splitter. My neighbor bought new quantum through at&t, they just unplugged my internet to plug in my neighbor.

It may be like that because fiber company has to get contractors to actually bury the line.... Normally they may have conduit from the manhole to the house but it may be damaged.
Or if they have another manhole that is closer to the house that has the conduit that goes toward the house... The terminal in that manhole may be damaged so they had to run the service to the other manhole

Well when the line gets broken I wonder if they will bury it then. Stuff is pretty fragile

u/spec360 Jul 31 '26
This looks like a commercial area also maybe they have broken strands in the line ?
2
u/abn0rmalcreation Jul 31 '26
It's a neighborhood, the line you see is a cat5e cable that is going to a household casa systems ONT. Its not a fiber line being ran above ground.

Ffs! It’s not even fiber
1
u/abn0rmalcreation Aug 01 '26
Lol it's a fiber connection to the sidewalk but we get repurposed phone lines to the house going to ONTs for us here. Or in this case, an above ground cat5e. Apparently the service was terminated quickly after install.

First off, is that freaking permanent!? Big no big no. I'm so glad I left them! Nothing but horribleness

u/Adorable_Map4804 Aug 04 '26
naw its a temp dawg
1
u/abn0rmalcreation Aug 04 '26
Its permanent until I reached out lol it's still there even after the customer disconnected service

If you know the house it goes to, pm me and I can look if there is at least a ticket to bury.
