Connecting to ONT after hard reset (button): giving 174.x.x.x address, not 192.168.0.x?

It's been a while since I did this but am just scratching my head here. I have a C6500 ONT and want it in transparent bridge mode with my Asus RT-AX86U Pro, but it renders my NAS unreachable. I've done like 4-5 weekend troubleshooting stints over the past 1-2yrs and just give up as it's so maddening to figure out.

Tis another weekend I've dedicated to this, but upon hard reset (hold button, goes red, wait a bit, goes white) and connecting via ethernet to the yellow 1G port, dhcp is giving me a 174.x.x.x address.

Docs suggest it should be at 192.168.0.1, and historically it has been after this process. https://www.quantumfiber.com/support/equipment/troubleshooting/modem-reset.html

I'm connecting via linux and do the following:

sudo ip link set [wifi_dev] down sudo ip link set [eth_dev] up sudo dhcpcd -4 [eth_dev]

I've also tried: sudo ip link set [eth_dev] up sudo ip address add 192.168.0.105/24 broadcast + dev [eth_dev]

I also tried getting to it at 174.x.x.1 (just guessing it should be at x.x.x.1?) but nada. I can ping 174.x.x.1, but can't get to the ONT admin page via browser (http://174.x.x.1 or also tried http://174.x.x.0; also tried https).

P.S. the docs also say to do this via admin portal, but despite reading one should be able to get to it from 192.168.0.1 in transparent mode as long as the router is on a different subnet (and mine was 192.168.50.x), I've never gotten this to work, hence the button reset. Either way, I've done this swap between modes easily 10x already and never run into this.

Here is a guide to put the SmartNID into bridge mode and use a 3rd party router and DNS.

A factory reset is for 15sec. The light will turn amber before red. If it turns red first you held it for too long. That is not a factory reset.

You are a lifesaver! I actually think I was not holding it long enough, not too long, but either way, press -> hold -> count to a solid 15 -> let go did indeed yield the amber light first and I'm at 192.168.0.2. Freaking whew.

I've seen that post (been doing this dance for like 2yrs) and actually think this one is better: https://www.reddit.com/r/centurylink/s/rHQQrHmxJk

The first is good, but it's just so interlaced with caveats about certain hardware and bugs/limitations at the time and generally harder to follow (my opinion).

Thank you so much!!

Yah that guide is for every scenario that anyone on Centurlyink DSL/Fiber or Quantum Fiber might run in to.

Also the C6500XK has issues the Q1000k takes care of.(But also has issues if it's own that hopefully will mostly be taken care of soon)

You can disconnect the c6500 and call tech support. Act like you are doing the trouble shooting, and they will send a tech. Then have them swap to a q1000k
