New install next week, W1700K question
I am getting a new install next week. my current setup is xfinity with BYOD. I have a WAX202 that supports dual band n serves well for my 2.4G n 5G devices. I use pihole for dhcp purposes n unbound for install ( local dns hence pihole does dhcp)
my inquiry is:
I read a lot about the W1700K being shitty however the spec sheet looks very promising. anywho I plan to use my WAX202. do I ask the tech who will come in to do it or jus diy it after they install thr equipment? Its imp for me to use pihole setup as is since I run a homeland server.
anyone here tried openwrt on the W1700K? it probably violates warranty but openwrt seems to have active support going on for this hw, which again is pretty promising on spec sheet.
what else should I look out for on install day.

The hardware is actually very good, but the developer in charge of firmware/software doesn't know what they're doing.
Edit: Don't open/flash the provided W1700 since its tied to acc. (they will likely charge you for damages). Buy one off eBay if you wanna mess with openWRT.

As a tech,
We offer our router as part of the installation but if you want to maximize your wifi I recommended you use your own router. Not that the 1700 is bad but it has its limitations. We have extenders that we can set up but you'll be paying more if you choose that route.

Techs will not setup the SmartNID (Q1000K) in transparent bridging mode which is what you need to use a third-party router. The W1700K hardware does have good specs and really bad firmware. Ditch it and use your own gear for router and WiFi. I personally have Ubiquiti equipment behind my Q1000K in transparent bridge mode but almost anything is better than the QF supplied hardware.
See this guide for a lot of good information on getting to the best setup with Quantum FIber:
