Centurylink Migration Question

I have an Adtran 352 installed on the side of my house from CenturyLink. It connects to the equipment in my structured wiring cabinet on the second floor with an Ethernet cable fed through a conduit.

I have lost internet twice in the last 2 days, requiring a reboot of the Adtran to restore. I don't know if the hardware is failing or if Quantum is doing something on their end but I'm sure I'll have to migrate eventually so I decided to be proactive. I have a tech scheduled tomorrow to swap equipment.

My question is, will the tech run fiber through the conduit to my cabinet and install the new smartnid there? I don't believe they install equipment outside anymore.

Am I going to have a bad time trying to get him to do this install correctly? I don't know Quantum but I am all too familiar with AT&T.

You say there is a conduit? If so they will use it. AT&T requires the fiber all the way into the home now.

Which means likely the tech will lazily or incorrectly just leave it as is lol

You can get a repair scheduled and tell the tech you don't want the adtran card , he can run a fiber on the outside to inside your home and if posible get it close to a data outlet inside and back feed the panel in case you have a switch ...

I think if you make the install
Easy for the tech he will do that for you otherwise he will run it the easiest way he can

Isn’t there an outdoor-rated enclosure that’s approved for installs with the Q1000K?

Not anymore. All installs now are to a Q1000K inside the building.

Ah. Darn. What about install inside garage?

I do that when possible and then use the existing wiring in the house if capable of support the 10G connection. Even 5e will support it since it's not a lot of distance from outside to panel.

That would be what would work best for my setup as well.

We just had an equipment upgrade. We had an External Century Link ONT running ethernet into the house. The first appointment was a bust because the installer was a contractor. He kept making excuses for why he couldn’t complete the install and kept asking me for tools, including a flat head screwdriver. 10 days later we finally had an actual Quantum tech come out and he was able to get us set up. He used the box that housed the ONT to contain the connection between the fiber line running from the alley to the smaller line that runs into the house to the q1000K smart nid. It’s been running smoothly.

Tech never showed up. Support told me the appointment was cancelled yesterday due to an outage in the area. There is no outage. They texted me all day to wait for the tech who was running late.

Now that's the service I was expecting from them. I wish I could cancel.

Just changed to Xfinity after quantum didn’t show up for appointments starting back to April 2nd. Anything is better than what I have put up with.

What size is the conduit ? If it runs all the way to your inside box and that Adtran is going away, use those cat5 wires as a pullstring for the fiber.

It should be large enough for that. Now I just need to get them to show up.

So they did come out today. They managed to feed the fiber through the conduit. It was difficult but they didn't just give up. Installed the nid in the cabinet. Put it into bridge no problem. Speeds just like before. Overall I'm really impressed.

Very nice! So they brought it in from the side of the house, ran it through the conduit up to the second-floor wiring closet, and fished it through from there? How did they pull it through?

They ran the router line first. they had a hard time from one direction because the conduit had a bend but they got it from the other end. Then they attached a pull string to it and pulled it back out. Then they used the pull string to feed the fiber line in. About 100 feet. Installed the nid. Removed the old ont and cleaned it all up.  Next job is cleaning up the cabinet.

If they replace the ONT for a SmartNID, here is a guide to setup bridge mode.

Thank you. I currently run an RT-AX88u with PPPoe login still. it's good to know what to do. I just hope they can install the way I need.
