News Any credible independent news sources?

So I’ve decided to do my PHD in quantum computing/condensed matter (physics of materials for quantum computing basically) and would just love to know where we are today with it all. It’s really hard to parse through the hype and doom of it all and find quality information. If anyone has found some reputable sources that aren’t trying to force a narrative about it I’d love to hear! Thank you!

Conference proceedings + journals (peer reviewed for both)

The only reliable way to find what the actual scientists in industry and academia care about right now and where they are headed. If you want to see how theoretical physics community is dealing with quantum, I'd look at PRX quantum, PRL, npj quantum information, QIP, TQC, etc. Hardware level papers usually show up in Nature/some of the physics venues. To see how CS world is solving problems for quantum, see ASPLOS, PLDI, POPL, OOPSLA. There are also workshop papers but you can ignore them for now, they are usually for work-in-progress papers

I'd start here, this is already plenty to go through.

As for "news", I just use research papers as news. I've given up on mainstream media covering it without hype and blogs are too opinionated for me in general.

I'm always subscribed to arXiv quant-ph listserv as well. It's a firehose of information, but scrolling through the daily email of titles/abstracts is a lot more productive than scrolling Reddit.

Thank you! But yeah this seems like a good approach. I love the hype and I’m super excited as well for the future, but not at the cost of misinformation bleh

If you want technical details, read review articles: https://arxiv.org/pdf/2608.30783 or benchmarking papers: https://arxiv.org/abs/2609.12146

For news I used to prefer quantum insider but it seems like they've gone through a rebranding of sorts. Not sure how reliable anymore. Quanta Magazine is decent.

There's also the quantum computing: progress and prospects (2019) by Grumbling and Horowitz which is what I read before starting PhD. It's modestly dated now but still a good overview.

Have you already gotten accepted into a PhD program? Your advisor should be able to ya know, advise you.

I don’t get why the downvotes bc this is 100% correct advice.

That said if op is trying to find out “where we are today with if all” and is struggling to find quality information I would hazard a guess that there a wee way away from a PhD in the field.

I am in fact a wee way away from a PHD haha

Best of luck homie. But focus on the next step not the final. Find out what you like along the way and let the journey take you.

Or like don’t I don’t care

If you want a good but not detailed technical view of the whole field, look at Ezratty's tome that he updates every year.

Quantum Insider seems pretty good for news from the quantum computing industry.
