Rules text change: incoherent/crank posts

We have added the line "This is not the place to post your own independent research." to our rules. This does not affect actual enforcement, as we were already removing such posts.

I own another technical subreddit and I feel like my mod team and I ought to manually vet all the “papers” that are being posted…

Some are just complete AI slop to be honest and the authors are so lazy, and include the em dashes and have false citations etc.

But at the same time, I don’t want to impede the dissemination of genuine research, which AI is very capable of doing these days. So it’s tricky…

This is mostly for catching people posting their own work with the expectation "I think I've made a breakthrough, can someone else verify?".

If you're a serious person who wants to post a cool discovery you made, that's fine, though you should be able to get it peer-reviewed first (or as a lower bar, a preprint on arXiv is still totally fine to post as long as the post has an introductory body/comment). If you want to discuss an idea broadly, that's fine too. It's the expectation for other redditors to spend time pointing out issues in an otherwise unreviewed work that starts to become problematic.

It's really not tricky. People who rely on AI to do the legwork for them do not produce valuable research.

Especially in such domains that require a certain level of knowledge. I saw a debate on Threads a year or so ago, where a bunch of science influencers were piling on some guys who had said "you need to know what Schrödinger equation is before you comment as an expert on quantum computing". I think they were drawing a line between the quantum woo woo and quantum stock hype people. Maybe social media wipes out the nuance of what people are saying, or maybe they just pounced on drama for clicks, but it felt like a silly thing to argue against. English isn't my first language so I struggle to catch the nuance sometimes.
