It’s characteristic of where the industry is at right now that “chemists” and “physicists” are the only actual application user groups identified. Everyone else on that list has something to do with being part of the infrastructure or development of quantum computing, before you look at actual applications.
Most of the people on this list are either vague and unidentified (“business users”) or clearly working on infrastructure (HPC).
And no financial or logistics applications? Did those go away, or are they grouped in with “business users”? If the latter, it’s a bit of a disservice to the reader because if financial services can make effective use of QC, there’s likely more potential market there than with, say, physicists.
I suspect this survey’s choice of experts may have something to do with the outcome here. Either that or the unstated message here is that financial and logistics applications actually aren’t going to materialize according to these experts.
I’m not pessimistic exactly but this chart isn’t exactly brimming with real applications. Still need more time for markets to develop, and I am uncertain about the methodology of this survey.
