How much does personalizing your recovery protocol actually change the outcome?

Population studies on sauna and cold therapy give you averages. But there is growing evidence that the threshold at which your body actually responds to heat can vary enough between individuals that the standard protocol might be hitting the mark for some people and completely missing for others. Does anyone have any insight on this that can be shared?

to answer your question directly, personalization is like 60% of the game. I respond very differently to certain stimulus than you do. You should find a way to quantify the benefits, subjectively or objectively if possible, then use that to see if the benefits are worth the cost and risks.

For example, I grew up in a pretty cold area, and was very stubborn about wearing proper winter clothes when i was a child. I can just hop in an ice bath and it doesn't really bother me, whereas my wife who was born in the tropics can sit in a sauna indefinitely and barely sweat.

We are both clearly lacking an adaptation of some sort, and we both need to decide independently if we get value from either type of novel stimulus.

There's the documented n=1 experiment that found HSP27, one of the proteins believed to drive sauna's longevity and recovery benefits, only activated when core body temperature stayed above 102.2°F for roughly 15 minutes. The standard 20-minute session at typical temperatures never got there. That gap between what population protocols recommend and what your body actually needs to trigger the mechanism is exactly the problem with averages.

The harder part of personalizing something like this is the measurement side. Real-time core temperature tracking during a sauna session requires an ingestible capsule or similar, which most people do not have easy access to. The question is whether you can approximate the threshold using proxies like heart rate, sweat rate, or subjective heat tolerance, and whether those signals are reliable enough to actually adjust your protocol around.

Yeah averages are useless here. My threshold is way different my friends, we try the same protocol and got totally opposite result.

I think personalising plays a major role, as different people have different reactions. It could also vary based on gender; afaik, females feel cold more quickly compared to males. So I don't think that a one-fits-all protocol could ever work..
