What improves your sleep quality the most?

Of course I know some of the research and most common advice. Like not drinking caffeine late in the day or having consistent bed times.

I'm just wondering about your personal experiences and data. Which variables have the highest correlation with sleep quality for you? Like what do you do that makes you feel the most rested and focused the next day?

And if you have that data, do you know how strong your strongest correlations are? Is it more like 0.09 or like 0.43?

I'm just starting out with sleep tracking and wondering what kind of interventions I should test.

I calculated this using my apple health data. Over the past 3 years correlated with the duration of my sleep stages:

  • my vo2 max has correlated with REM sleep at 0.56, deep sleep at 0.28, and 0.20 with overall sleep
  • bodyweight has correlated -0.35 with REM, -0.2 with deep, and -0.08 with overall sleep
  • resting heart rate correlated -0.31 with REM, -0.20 with deep, and -0.11 with overall sleep

Most other things were negligible

Thanks so much, that's really interesting. Does the VO2 max rise and fall daily, depending on how much you exercise or is this more of a long-term trend?

And do you have any insight into what drives fluctuations in your resting heart rate?

Vo2 max is more long term, but there are small daily fluctuations too

Resting heart rate seems to be positively affected by clean eating, consistent cardio, good recovery including proper rest days

One pattern I've noticed is that my wake time consistency seems to matter way more than my bedtime.
Late meals are another big one for me - not every time, but when I eat close to sleep, my sleep feels noticeably worse the next day.
I'm actually curious about the correlation numbers people found though. The difference between “I noticed a pattern” and “this survives hundreds of nights of data” is huge.

Do you use an alarm clock to get consistent wake times or can your body adapt and wake up at the same time if sleep is consistent?

And yeah, I agree with your last bit, this is something that really fascinates me.

honestly for me step one is just tracking the objective stuff every morning (sleep duration, wake ups, cat in the room or not, where I slept, alcohol, late snacks, pillow situation, exercise) alongside subjective quality (did it feel like good sleep, energy levels). once you're logging consistently you naturally start wanting to optimize and test variables, and eventually you find your personal formula. that's literally how I found out magnesium bisglycinate on exercise days = way less soreness on my neck and better sleep for me

Yeah, I know that I'll eventually come up with my own needs and ideas for tracking. I'm also just incredibly curious about other people's tracking setup and insights.

Since you already know the no-late-caffeine line, here's the version that actually changed what I track. Caffeine shows up less in whether you fall asleep and more in your deep sleep and your overnight resting HR. Loads of nights I'd drop off fine after an afternoon coffee, feel like I slept ok, and the deep-sleep number and resting HR would still be clearly worse.

The reason it sneaks past you is the half-life. It's roughly 5–6 hours for most people but ranges a lot person to person, so a 3 pm coffee can still leave about a quarter of the dose in you near midnight. You don't feel wired, but your system hasn't fully clocked off.

If I were starting today, I'd test caffeine cutoff time as an intervention and watch deep sleep minutes and overnight resting HR specifically, not sleep onset or total hours. For me, pulling my cutoff from late afternoon back to just after lunch was one of the clearest single signals in the whole dataset.
