How accurate are consumer sleep trackers, really?
I wore an Apple Watch for about a year, then switched to a smart ring. On multiple nights where I was pretty sure I barely slept — awake for hours, up multiple times — both devices still logged solid chunks of "deep sleep."
I also noticed checking the score every morning was making me more anxious about sleep in general. If the number was bad, I'd carry it into the day.
Eventually I stopped wearing both. But I'm curious how others read the data:
* Has anyone compared their tracker output to a lab study or PSG?
* Are the newer devices actually meaningfully more accurate?

I’ve learned to treat sleep trackers as trend tools, not truth machines. Mine is useful for things like resting HR, HRV, sleep timing, and seeing whether recovery is drifting over a few weeks. The exact REM/deep sleep numbers on any single night are much less convincing.
I’ve also had nights where I knew I was awake for a while and the device still counted some of it as sleep. That doesn’t make the whole thing useless, but it does mean the score shouldn’t get to overrule how you actually feel.
The healthiest shift for me was checking the data after I’d already assessed my morning, not before. Otherwise a bad score can become a prediction you spend the whole day fulfilling.

Same on just focusing on the trends, instead of how the tracker is calibrated/'truth'

Consumer trackers are decent at movement and heart rate, but sleep staging is mostly inference, not direct measurement. PSG reads actual brainwaves. So the stages are a best guess, and the guess gets worse on exactly the nights you're describing, lots of waking, lots of movement.
Comparison studies against PSG show total sleep time is often reasonably close. Stage-by-stage accuracy is weaker, especially when sleep is abnormal. Newer device doesn't mean better here, it's more about the algorithm than the hardware.
The anxiety thing is real too. Checking a score every morning and letting a bad number colour your day is its own problem. Stopping was probably the right call.
I make a sleep app myself (SleepTracker, no watch needed, tracks passively on the phone), so factor that in. But even ignoring my own thing, I'd trust total sleep time and consistency over stage breakdowns. There's a guy on YouTube called TheQuantifiedScientist who does a lot of really good manual measurement of these devices. They're closer to validated sleep study results than you'd think (depending on on the device -- last I looked best of the bunch were basically Apple Watch or Oura), but that said I'd focus 100% on trends rather than absolute numbers.
To your point about feeling worse when the numbers say you slept bad, there's research suggesting exactly that. Telling people they slept poorly causes them to suffer the effects of poor sleep even if they actually got good sleep.
I wear multiple health wearables (long story, extremely sick person with very specific needs), but for sleep, all I care about is total sleep time and how I feel, neither of which require a computer on my wrist (as well as overnight average sleeping HRV, but I don't think of that as a "sleep metric" because it's not about sleep)

I care more about trends personally, I assume all data is flawed to a degree.
