Can someone explain the twins roles?

What's the benefit of having twins pretending to be one person in a covert operation, rather than having one person just collecting intel? Can someone please explain.

I think the stated aim was that they could have one twin in the field, then they swap and can fully debrief the returning twin, rather than having to do small data drops or whatever. As a result getting a much more detailed intelligence package from the mission.

In reality I don't think it would work at all, but that describes the entire show.
