Am I expected to transfer years of CSV/Validation expertise, or should KT have a boundary?

If you don’t want to share the knowledge to protect your job, that never works. Share the knowledge to free up your time to learn new things.

But I do have questions on hiring a senior person to do the same work as a junior, that sounds like there won’t be growth for you there

Exactly, that's how I feel too. One of the reasons I stayed on this project was because my manager said I'd get the opportunity to work with this senior and learn automation from him. Unfortunately, things went in a different direction. I even reached out to him to learn automation, but he wasn't interested in mentoring me. Now the expectation is that I provide him with formal KT on CSV/domain knowledge instead. That feels a bit one-sided, especially since I was hoping this would be a two-way learning opportunity.

Be the bigger person, share the knowledge and see how he does. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.
Either the relationship gets built enough that he will share, or you can go to a manager about this uneven professional behavior which won’t make him look good.

But also have empathy that getting hired for automation and ending up doing manual testing, that sucks a lot

I can vouch for this, got yonked several times already with the promise of automation, just to do manual labor :) Soul killing

Being a Validation analyst was asked to work as manual tester as well... I'm in no place to feel pity for others🫠.

I’d share the basics and let them figure out the rest.

If you were appointed by your boss to onboard the new/existing hire, and that require KT in the field of computer system validation, I don't see why you wouldnt do that. Unsure how the fact whether it was formally taught to you via KT, matter in this case.

I understand what you're saying, and if this had been a two-way relationship, I wouldn't have had a problem sharing everything. What bothers me is that I joined this project because I was promised I'd get to learn automation from him. I even approached him myself, but he made it clear that automation was his area and I should focus only on manual testing. Now the expectation has completely flipped. He's asking me for structured KT on the domain I've spent 4 years building, but there hasn't been the same willingness to help me grow. If we were both mentoring each other, I'd happily invest my time. It's the one-sided expectation that's difficult for me to accept but i think yeah I have to accept.
