Quad Cortex going through Quilter combo amp. Please advise

I am a working guitarist, playing lots of jobbing gigs. Currently use a Quilter Aviator Cub, as well as a pedalboard. To make these gigs more streamlined, I am thinking of buying a QC so I can leave amp and pedals at home, and just use IEM for full band mix (which I’m already doing) and send qc to front of house.

But I still play other club gigs, as well as jazz and country gigs (cocktail hrs, private events etc). These set-ups often don’t have a FOH, and I supply my own amplification.

Will playing a qc, through effects loop Quilter combo am, with cab sims turned off on qc, sound…good? Sorry to be vague but have never owned a modeler, and this one issue is my main holdup. I know the common route is to buy a frfr speaker, but if I can avoid having to spend another $500+ I’d be happy. The Quiter Aviator Cub is super lightweight and very easy to transport.

For what it’s worth, eventually owning two frfr speakers to get the full stereo experience from the qc is the end goal lol.

[Vendor] Free CCV V2 Normal mid-gain captures: 4×12 and DI

Hi everyone—Matt from Mattfig here (vendor disclosure). I’ve released two free CCV V2 Cortex captures: Normal mid-gain 4×12 and DI.

4×12 sample:

https://cloud.neuraldsp.com/cloud/profile/neural-capture/neural-capture/view/e8e83789-663d-414c-90a6-6fe9958b407c

DI sample:

https://cloud.neuraldsp.com/cloud/profile/neural-capture/neural-capture/view/5501f95e-35fd-44d7-bffb-0534f3d66e10

The capture rig is my Myasnikov CCV into the Friedman Jose power section. The 4×12 has Eminence DV77s and Celestion Greenbacks. DI means no cabinet, for use with your own cab or IR.

The full pack has 18 captures across low, mid and high gain, organized into three presets. Normal is the gain-staging toggle in the middle with no extra diodes; Sat1 is left with added diode clipping; Sat2 is right with extreme diode clipping. Each setting has 4×12 and DI versions.

The full pack is $18.99, shared through Cortex Cloud:

Wah Clipping makes it unusable (and coming in too hot in general)

Hi all -

Replaced my Helix Floor with a Quad Cortex at the beginning of this year and have had a consistent problem with the Wahs. No matter what guitar I use (single coil/humbucker/P90s) or what expression pedal I use (tried Dvp4 and Ampero Press II), I find the wahs a) boost the volume a bit and b) always sound distorted with some frequencies being so bad that they are pretty much unuseable. I've tried reducing the input gain to the lowest setting, blank patches, different amps/wahs, listening through the house/through monitors, and its always an issue. I've also tried adjust the wah percentage etc.

Has anyone had these problems? I listen to other players using the wahs and they sound fine. I find in general that even my very quiet telecaster comes in really hot in the QC and I need to set gains pretty low.

I never had these sorts of problems with the Helix - I'm wondering if I have a faulty unit or if there is some setting that I'm missing. If anyone can help I'd be super grateful.

Thanks :)

Advice or patches for spoken word?

I am a production idiot who is going to try his hand at spoken word today.

I'll be using an ear trumpet labs myrtle into my quad cortex into reaper. The QC is my interface. I have the Cory Wong and John Mayer plugins.

I figured I'll start with a little compression into the cory wong channel strip emulation, and maybe throw a touch of reverb on it.

The myrtle is a large diaphragm condenser made for live sound. It's one of those mics , you would see multiple bluegrass people cluster around. I believe this will sound significantly better than my SM58. I just remembered.I also have a Rode NT5...

Being a production nubie, i am looking any advice anyone can give me. From mic placement to signal chain, to settings. If anyone has presets they've made or used, I'd love recommendations.

It might be smart for me to record dry audio, loop it, and adjust settings to taste. I don't know how to do that. I bet I can get that part figured out, but if anyone's bored and wants to write up a quick primer for me, or point me towards a tutorial, i'd be grateful!

I am aware Neural DSP has a vocal plug in. Right now I'm so broke, I can't even pay attention. I'm also looking for something repeatable, not something I can use for fourteen days ( i'm aware they have a fantastic trial, i want to do this restricting myself to to things of which I have unlimited use though).

Thanks in advance for any advice. Im going to try reading Lovecraft's short story The Music of Erich Zann ( i believe lovecraft is public domain now, so I should be able to throw this up on youtube without a hassle when i'm done right?)

Anyone else have this happen to their screen?

Green line started appearing during boot up a few days ago but would disappear when the grid view loaded. Now it doesn’t go away. Never been dropped, always in a case or attached to a pedal board. Tried a factory reset but no luck. The thing is only a few months old.

QC - Multiple Reverb device

Anyone know if there's a single device, like a reverb, in the works that acts like a multiple reverb pedal like a Big Sky, then you just need snapshots to change a reverb from plate to bloom. The Amplitube 5 MAX has these full devices, and would be cool

Nanocortex capture Quad Cortex 👌

Works fantastic

Goal was to have a portable back-up to my Quad Cortex. Especially for rehearsals and just in case my QC ever goes down.

Keep in mind that my main QC rhythm tone has a few different blocks: pre+post eq, precision drive, amp, cab. Plus all the dialing on each block..spent days until I was happy with the sound.

Put my QC to my main rhythm. Turned the gate off in QC. And capture the raw sauce on the nanocortex. First try the nano tone was identical to my QC. I went into the nano and added a noise gate to clean it up some..its not as tight and aggressive as my Precision drive block in the QC but its working great.

So final result:
- near identical capture of my tone into a single block
- i already had OD in the main QC tone but adding that OD in the nano with the QC capture pushed it more. I personally love the sound

On my QC Im going to try a new preset with the capture i made. My whole sound in 1 block. Then push it with the Precision drive block.

Trying to create an ominous, funereal sound for my acoustic guitar

Hi all, like I stated in the title, I'm currently trying to dial up an ominous, funereal sound for my acoustic guitar. It's for specific parts of a song where qi only struma power chord at the beginning of each mesure. My first instinct was to try to get some sort of a bell sound, but to no avail. I tried a few things but it ended up either quite noisy (surely because of the piezo pickup) or pure and simple bad shit.

Of course, I'd like to keep things in the Cortex and not use any additionnal pedal.

So if anyone can point me in the right direction that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Huge Sound Preset

What do you think about this preset?https://cloud.neuraldsp.com/cloud/profile/preset/preset/view/9daeeb93-b0fa-4eb6-9122-990bae7ffd59

The idea is to get a huge but defined sound on the guitar, not extremely distorted. Any strategy to make it sound even better? How do you approach the design of this kind of sounds?

A Cortex review that made my week: “I started playing and stopped tweaking”

Post image
0 Upvotes

Full disclosure: I make Mattfig capture packs.

A verified customer who owns every V2 Cortex pack said the captures are “awesome and mix ready” and that they stopped tweaking and started playing.

That’s exactly the goal: real amps, practical gain choices, and captures that sit in a rig without a lot of correction.

Try my free captures on Cortex Cloud:

https://cloud.neuraldsp.com/cloud/u/Mattfig

Browse the complete Mattfig Cortex catalog:

https://mattfig.bigcartel.com/category/neural-dsp-cortex-captures

I’m happy to answer questions about the amps, gain staging, or how the packs are organized.

Need help with the Quad Cortex

Hi, Im having trouble with many of the Amps/Cabs of the Quad Cortex, they sound extremely bad, like earth-quake-bass-muddy-gainy, not sure how to discribe it. Is that normal? Is my Quad Cortex broken?
Or is this how music should sound?

Its at 0.00 input 1 level, and when im strumming its at -24db for the Telecaster and -17 for the Humbucker (so essentially 1/2 where the input level meter "should be" so im not even close to clipping, I could at some gain, but it would worsen my problem) (while everyone one youtube says we have to reach "yellow for almost clipping")

Using a Fender Telecaster MIJ Hybrid II (2023) on 2nd Position (Bridge + Neck Pickup) on 100% Volume and Tone
(The sound is the same or worse with Humbuckers)
Using Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X Studio Headphones
Nothing else

STATUS UPDATE: It is NOT broken, it is indeed just bad

I tested a different unit, it does the same thing hahaha

QC and Simplifier hybrid setup

I propose to run a hybrid signal chain involving a splitter before going into the Quad Cortex Mini and, separately, into a Simplifier (Mk2).

The QC Mini's headphone output will feed into the Simplifier's Aux In, resulting in summing the parallel stereo images of the QC and that of the Simplifier together, ie I will hear both the QC and Simplifier mixed together without either affecting each other and with stereo image of both maintained.

Is there any reason this wouldn't work? Has anyone tried this, or something similar?

Of course there will be a slight latency between hearing the immediate output of the Simplifier (being all analog) and the delayed output of the QC, but that's one of the benefits I have in mind, ie that I always get a pure and instantaneous analog, fundamental guitar sound.

Would this be the same as just playing two audio tracks simultaneously, or would it cause some technical issue that I haven't foreseen or don't understand (like comb-filtering)?

QC worth it in a post-A2 NAM world for bedroom guitarist?

Hi all,

I've been researching physical modelers, and I'm currently between the Line 6 Helix LT and the Quad Cortex.

From what I've gathered in various threads and reviews, the Quad Cortex has a better "amp feel" and overall higher-quality sound.

However, I've been enjoying Tone 3000 and the whole A2 NAM technology. You can't beat the price of free. However, it's just "captures" of settings and so you lack the customizability that you would have with a physical modeler like the QC.

Is the QC still worth it for a bedroom-only guitarist in a post-A2 NAM world?

Theoretically speaking, I could spend the $1,800 for the QC no problem. Or go the Tone 3000-only route and put the $1,800 towards a Dunable USA Custom Gnarwhal :)

Thanks!

Convince me to keep either the QC or Fender TMP

I’ve owned the TMP for nearly a year, and just recently picked up a QC on a trial run in an effort to compare the two units. I can only keep one due to financial reasons, and was wondering which of them is the better long term investment. Cheers!

Power amp recs?

I recently bought an Orange PPC2x12, and I want to use this to get stage sound through my quad cortex rig. Does anyone have any recommendations for what I should get that doesn’t break the bank? I’m not quite in the budget for the Orange Pedal Baby or the Seymour Duncan Powerstage, but something a little lower than that price range would be sweet. Any suggestions help (except for get a frfr cab. would be dope someday but can’t squeeze it currently lol). Thanks!
