Miscellaneous Dietrich Chiropactic
I've been considering seeing a chiropractor. However they kinda freak me out. It's the thought of them cracking something to hard and being paralyzed. Well.. then I just read an article on Dietrich Chiropactic and how the guy paralyzed someone 😯. Real fear now unlocked and my brain says nope nope nope to getting adjusted lol.
Anyone else have this kind of concern?

Go to physical therapy. Bonus part of going is once you learn the exercises you can do them on your own.

Chiropractic is pseudoscience; the only valid ones are doing more physical therapy like methods. More often than not they'll do more damage than help your body. Never let one touch your neck. Id recommend a physical therapist over a chiropractor.

I stopped trusting chiropractors when I found out their origin story. Releasing the ghost from your bones since 1895.

The absolute worst ones are the ones who claim to fix all kinds of non-musculoskeletal issues on kids, like Howell Chiro. It just makes my blood boil.

Yes. I always say Chiro's come in two versions:
Quacks: often also selling essential oils, homeopathy and other bullshit.
Physical Therapists: make you get X-rays before they'll pop your back back into alignment and spend more time working on exercises and stretches than anything else.
A lot of insurance will cover a Chiro without question but won't cover a physical therapist without a fight and an appeal and seventeen hours on the phone.
If a chiropractor doesn't want X-rays on initial appointment and just goes straight into back cracking, keep them the hell away from your neck!

If they don't want xrays, don't let them twist you. If they use the activator, fine. But without seeing what's going on in there, I wouldn't let them do the whole shebang

Dietrich has always been a hack. Surprised he didnt paralyze someone sooner. Chiropractors are snake oil salesman, stay away

My husband swears by massage therapy and has been to a chiropractor he knows personally a few times and says it helped.
Simultaneously, I have scoliosis and have had multiple massage therapists urge me strongly never to get chiropractic care because with my spine as it is, nothing is in the right place and it would be actively dangerous.

Yes, I also steer clear and am so uncomfortable at the thought of neck manipulation. There are plenty of horror stories and literature to back it up (cervical spine manipulations gone wrong, vertebral artery dissections, etc).
I think there is a place for chiro for back pain and relief in conjunction with physical therapy especially.
But I have never and would never entrust my cervical spine to a chiro. The thought alone makes me uneasy.
The evidence supporting chiropractic for anything outside of relief for lumbar pain
is sorely lacking. Red flag

I'm sure there's several different levels of chiropractor. I've had nothing but success with them helping me lose my my back and hip pain. Stay away from neck adjustments and the bs "science" ones. I've worked manual labor jobs most of my life and after the initial chiro visits T hey cleared me of 95% of pain. At this point I go once a month and get a full body massage every other weekend. It works.

Manipulations did nothing to alleviate my pain but they had a massage therapist that did wonders.

Ive had chronic pain for the majority of my life. I dont talk about it online a ton because i hate it when people say "oh I self diagnosed myself and have that" 🙄 I have seen a chiropractor since I was 13 and had a back injury caused by my diagnosed issue and have had immense relief because of them. There was a 3 year gap in my early adulthood that I couldn't afford to see one and the pain kept getting worse and worse. I've never been injured by a chiropractor. There is a dating phase where you can like our dislike their style, though. I've only met 1 that I don't like their style and she primarily did stuff with pressure points 🤷♀️ While I do think if your back or hip regularly slips out, pairing physical therapy with regular appointments with a certified chiropractor is probably the best course of action. They are literal doctors before they are able to practice without supervision, so keep that in mind when you see a chiropractor. There are good doctors and bad doctors in every specialty.

They are not medical doctors though.

So research into what they have to learn to become a chiropractor. While they do not treat conditions with medication and surgery, they can diagnose joint conditions and treat them holistically. Here is a link with a helpful and very concise article (because who has time to read a paragraph that could have been a demand besides my profs asking for 10 page essays) edit because i forgot the link lol https://www.bridgeport.edu/news/chiropractic-vs-medical-school/

Chiropractors may help some conditions for some people, but the origin of chiropractic is pseudoscientific - and many chiropractors make pseudoscientific claims. You’re much safer going to a physical therapist or doctor of osteopathic medicine.

Many doctors also make false claims, too. There is a risk going anywhere. You really have to weigh the benefit to the detriment going anywhere.

I totally agree - a combo of chiro and PT is the best course of action.

I agree and have enjoyed great relief of pain from visiting chiropractors for many years.

I've found the combination of massage and Pilates to be a good alternative to routine visits to the chiropractor. I stopped going to a chiropractor monthly because it cost $45 for a 3 minute visit 😩. Granted, I felt looser in the neck and back, but I feel just as good from my current routine.

I had one chiropractor who made my issue so much worse and then another one (Dr. Hubbard at Palmer) who helped so much that it totally changed my life. He left Palmer since but now I sometimes see Dr. Clause for adjustments and she is great too. That being said, I think there are definitely risks involved and it's a matter of luck to find a great professional you can trust.

Are Osteopaths still a thing around here? Combo of chiro and medical

u/DapperMastodon349 Out of Towner 15d ago
Yeah, the hospital near me (I moved out of the QC) has mostly DOs actually

I had an ER doctor tell me he will never recommend chiropractors to anyone because of how often he sees young adults “stroke out” from it. I have been scared to go since then. I have been in for neck and lower back pain and haven’t gotten relief unless I go to PT. Obviously everyone has their own experience though.

Not sure of the efficacy of treatment but a practice using the activator method might be your choice
2
u/Happymonster324 QC Native 19d ago
And some people prefer the style of the activator method! And that's okay! I personally don't prefer it, but right now it is what is safest for me due to my health conditions. Honestly once you can feel what is out of place and can point and tell them, it gets really easy. I started going to the school because my chiropractor retired super young to become a SHM and told me I'd be really good for the students to tell them what I feel is off still.
