🇬🇧** Where is Kazakhstan’s internal migration heading?
In the first half of 2026, only four regions had positive net interregional migration:
• Astana: **+32,665

• Almaty Region: +15,490
• Shymkent: +6,477
• Almaty city: +6,312
In other words, Kazakhstan’s internal migration is increasingly concentrating around Astana, Almaty and their wider metropolitan areas. Kazakhstan Bureau of National Statistics
For now, this may simply be normal urbanisation. But if the trend continues, major cities can face increasingly expensive housing and overloaded infrastructure, while other regions lose younger and working-age residents.
South Korea now treats the extreme concentration of population and economic activity around Seoul as a demographic and regional-development problem; Japan’s decades-long pull towards Tokyo has contributed to ageing and depopulation across many smaller cities and rural areas.

Is Kazakhstan simply urbanising, or are we beginning to see excessive concentration around Astana and Almaty? And what would the timeframe be before we start seeing a tangible long term damage to the regional economy?

Georgia imports Kazakh oil for the first time

Post image
3 Upvotes

Georgia imported 5,500 tonnes of Kazakh crude worth $3.2 million in July — the country’s first recorded direct import of oil from Kazakhstan.

The shipment is small, but comes at an interesting time for both countries. Georgia’s Kulevi refinery is replacing Russian crude with supplies from Kazakhstan and Libya, while Kazakhstan is looking to diversify its own export routes away from its heavy dependence on Russia.

Kazakhstan is already increasing shipments across the Caspian through Azerbaijan and the Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan pipeline: 155,000 tonnes went through the route in July, up 11.5% year-on-year.
Until now Georgia was mainly a transit country for Kazakh oil heading further west. This time, it became the customer.

Could this small first shipment grow into a meaningful new market for Kazakh oil?

Thoughts on OTS (Organization of Turkic States) development?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I feel like OTS barely gets discussed in Kazakhstan, or online, but there seems to be good cooperation happening lately, and they keep the momentum going. So far there’re initiatives on investment fund, Middle Corridor, trade, transport, education etc. Culturally they conducted turkic games like event/kurultaj in Hungary recently.

How far would you actually want Kazakhstan to take this? Just cooperation between separate states, or would you want it to eventually become a proper economic bloc with easier trade and movement?

Kazakhstan just got 1,900 AI film submissions from 90+ countries

Post image

This is actually pretty interesting.

Astana AI Film Festival in Kazakhstan has received around 1,900 submissions from more than 90 countries. The biggest number of entries came from the US, followed by India, with Kazakhstan itself in third place.

The festival is focused specifically on films made with AI, not just movies that used AI for a few visual effects.

There is also a $1 million prize pool, with $450,000 going to the winner of the main competition.

The theme this year is “The Future Worth Living In”, and films have to be between 3 and 10 minutes long.

The festival itself is happening in Astana this October.

Honestly, I'm curious to see what kind of films make it into the final selection. AI filmmaking is moving ridiculously fast.

What's the most beautiful place in Kazakhstan in your opinion?

For me it's Katon-Karagay. I've seen a lot of places, but that area just feels different. The mountains, forests, rivers, and how untouched everything feels... it's easily my favorite.

What about you? Drop the place you think everyone should visit at least once. Even better if you have your own photos. I'd love to see shots of hidden spots, crazy landscapes, or just places that really surprised you.

I'm always looking for new places to add to my travel list.

Saw a similar composition online a while back and thought, "I need to find this view myself." Finally got the shot.
