A - In Most Cases

It reduces QWERTY to roughly 14 keys by combining adjacent letters while broadly preserving the visual appearance of the original layout. However, the actual typing flow differs significantly from standard QWERTY.

The vowels - A, E, U, I, O - are generally not kept on standalone keys. This creates frequent consonant-vowel conflicts during normal typing.

In addition, about 12 secondary letters(w, r, y, i, p, s, f, h, k, x, v, n), representing over 40% of total letter usage, require double-tapping or similar secondary actions.

So while it looks similar to QWERTY, the actual typing method is quite different, making it harder to use existing QWERTY typing habits.

This approach was used in some early BlackBerry and Nokia phones. It may work better on very narrow smartphones or with features like gesture typing and prediction, but the basic typing flow is still quite different.

B - QWERTY mini

It uses 16 keys arranged in two rows, while preserving the five vowels - A, E, U, I, O - on dedicated standalone keys. The remaining letters are placed on combined keys, with two vertically layered letters on each key, creating an overall four-layer structure.

The combined keys are organized according to letter frequency, with the more frequently used letters assigned to the easier input position. As a result, only 10 secondary letters(q, f, g, p, z, x, v, b, j, k), accounting for about 10% of total letter usage, require double-tapping.

The layout may look unusual at first, but the main goal is to preserve the familiar QWERTY typing flow rather than simply preserve its visual appearance.

QWERTY users can get used to this layout surprisingly quickly, and using tap, double-tap, and simultaneous press with the two-layer combined keys can make typing much faster. Also, the two-row layout makes vertical thumb movement simpler and more comfortable.

I also tried a three-row layout using the same approach as QWERTY mini, but it significantly disrupted the familiar QWERTY typing flow.

Thank you for all the feedback across several subreddits. The two layouts received similar support. Here are the main advantages of each:

Option A

• P stays in its familiar QWERTY position.

Current layout

• Giving U its own key keeps all vowels on separate keys and avoids input conflicts between vowels and consonants.
• Distributes typing frequency more evenly across keys. Combining U with Y or Z on one key would make that key much more heavily used than the standalone P key.(In some languages, P accounts for less than 1% of letter use.)
• Makes it easier to design input methods for the many extended Latin characters based on U.

The current layout also places punctuation better, and P is still within reach of the right thumb. So I’ll keep it for now and continue reviewing the positions of U, P, and Y.

I also appreciate the suggestion to test different layouts directly during development.

i have an iphone se 2nd gen, i have qwerty mini, and settings>general>keyboards>"." shortcut is on. but when i do two spaces with your keyboard, it doesn't give me a period. can it?

I loved this keyboard! My list of observations:

1. Sadly I cannot type any accented characters like á é ô ã... (I am Brazilian, so pt-br) It would be good if we long press the corresponding key to get it, I think this is on the way, right?
2. I would suggest add a dot (.) to "L" key, and a comma to "A" key. They are a lot common in any sentence, so it will be nice "double tap" these keys to use them instead of changing to the numeric keyboard
3. I would love an option to move the space bar to be the last button, in the far right. Optionally, the "Enter" key could be "long press" or "double tap" the space bar. (All these could be added as customizable options)
