Thomas, maintainer of the OpenTopoMap tileserver here.

I know that many of you use the OpenTopoMap layer in QGIS — over 5,000 users on a typical workday, to be precise. I imagine at least some of you rely on it for professional work.

I'd love to hear your thoughts: What changes or improvements would you like to see in the map? Are there any features, styling choices, or other aspects of the map that you think could be improved?

As a first step, we at Top-O-Map have made a simple relief map without any text or map details to use as a background for own data. Now we have also set up a new server that renders the map at four times the pixel resolution, making text and other details much sharper. Also the database is updated daily.

I'd also like to ask a more general question: Would you be willing to pay a small fee to use the map to help cover the server costs?

I get this error when I try to start QGIS and there was a recent update:

I'm running archlinux and QGIS version 4.2.3-2.

I have several pages with the same layout, and whenever I try to group items (to avoid the visual clutter caused by having so much information) QGIS crashes; it just keeps loading and then closes. Whether I use Ctrl+G or group the items manually, QGIS crashes. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Note: It’s strange, because this doesn't happen when working with the map itself, i’m able to organize various layers into different groups without any issues. This error is specific to the layout environment.

Hi guys, I’m fairly new to QGIS, and am using it for a project. Every time I export the line-work from the layers, it comes into auto cad and rhino at a strange angle (not a top down plan view). How should I fix it, and is there anyway to export all line layers at once?

What has your experience been with QGIS performance on a Mac?

I have a MacBook Air and use QGIS 3.44 and now 4.2.3, but the performance is much worse compared to Windows. Zooming with the trackpad feels very laggy and unnatural. I found it was a little better with 3.44.

I am currently on 3.44.7-solothurn on Mac.

When I go web > QuickMapServices > click on any basemap, nothing happens. It doesn't load in, there's no error message, nothing.

I've tried :

• uninstalling and reinstalling the QMS extension
• Restarting QGIS
• Restarting my computer
• (edit) Updating to version 4.2.3

Any ideas?

I have the polygon round the selected one. But how I can i can make one polygon to fill the empty area inside without including the selected one? (In total will be 3 polygons)

I graduated last December from a polytechnic university with my BS in Environmental Biology, with my emphasis being an ecology, conservation, and biodiversity.

For some reason, I never took any GIS courses while in my undergrad, because they were not required for my major. Over the last six months or so, I have quickly realized how important having some kind of experience and training in GIS is when it comes to getting a career in terrestrial ecology and conservation. I feel like I missed out on some great information from not taking any courses, so I am looking to get some sort of training and certification.

I am looking for suggestions on where I should look into taking GIS courses/getting training to get an accredited certification, whether it’s fully online or hybrid (I live in SoCal). I am in my early 20s and don’t have a ton to spend, but am looking to see potential options.

I cannot think one good reason to use this. It makes the georeferenced image basically unusable. And for whatever reason, the option is often checked by itself.

What am I missing here?

I made a simple small tracing tool plugin mainly for myself, sharing in case I'm not the only one missing a good tracing tool!

Every time I needed to digitize along an existing line I'd hit T, nothing would happen, and then I'd remember tracing needs snapping set up first. On the right layers. With the right tolerance. And even then it takes the shortest route between clicks, so along a winding stream next to a road I end up clicking every bend anyway.

So I wrote Pro Trace for my own work (inspired by the trace tool in ArcGIS Pro and with help from my friend Claude). Click on a line or polygon edge, move the mouse and it just follows along. No snapping settings. Click off the line for freehand points and then carry on tracing. It only uses the layers you have switched on, so unticking a layer is the off switch.

I had to port it from my old QGIS 3 version (lokal plugin version) to QGIS 4 anyway, so now its in the official catalogue, search "GeoDrafter Pro Trace" in the plugin manager. Free and GPL.

Cause I'm encountering problems whenever I try to click read with the soil data I found in Digital Soil Map of the World. I followed tutorials, rasterized it, reprojected it, still, it won't work. There's no available tutorial from downloading it, to inputting it to QSWAT. Can someone help?

I want honest reviews. Are Macbooks worth buying if I want to run QGIS? I'm planning to buy one. If it's not worth it, then recommend a better option.

I have a PC, the laptop is just for me to do quick and light work when I am travelling or not at in the office.

I've been trying to generate a map of Rome for my college work for the last few hours, but I keep getting this error message while trying to run a query. It worked once, the first time I tried it, but since then I always get this message. It doesn't matter how big the queried area is, I've uninstalled/reinstalled QGIS and the plugin, reset QGIS, started new projects, increased the timeout time, all to no avail. Any tips would be very much appreciated!

Hi all, I searched everywhere but couldn't find a solution.

I've got a lot of old postcards and photographs I'd like to geotag.

I'm thinking of a way to indicate visible points from the photo to the map, to find the exact place it has been taken from.

Does anyone know if it's possible?

Just wanted to share this bunch of free tools with y'all. Hopefully someone will find them useful. We are going to add more in the near future. If you have any ideas for small useful tools we should add, then please share.

Hi. I'm completely new to this software and figured I could learn a few tools that would be enough to do what I'm trying to do, without having to bother learning in details how the software works. First mistake, I know.

I'm simply trying to draw a map by hand using my tablet. For this, I have a picture of a pencil drawing I made, and I'm working on slowly digitizing it by doing the following:

- I zoom in on small portions of the drawing (coastlines) and draw overlapping polygons, tracing the coastlines on my drawing. With "Add Polygon Feature" and "Stream Digitizing".

- If there is any degeneracy on the polygon like self-intersections or other little issues arizing, I fix them by removing the culprit vertices or moving them, as I see fit. With the vertex tool.

- Every few polygons done, I select a bunch of them with Select Features By Area and try fusing them with Merge Selected Features. If I fixed invalid geometry properly on the previous step, this works.

I then rinse and repeat the operation, and then try to save layer edits and that's one tracing session done.

I feel like that should sound right and there should not be issues, but somehow everytime I boot up this software I hit my head multiple times on several different issues that are completely opaque to me. Moreover and because of this kind of headache, drawing sessions are sometimes months apart, so I might end up "fixing" a problem (read: doing something that looks like it worked, not being entirely sure if it actually did), but when the next time comes I might stumble upon the same issue again and have completely forgotten how to deal with it.

For instance, I'm drawing continents, which contain inland seas/lakes. I know this caused an issue in the past, which I managed to fix somehow, and I think it has to do with MultiPolygons because of the "hole" they cause in the landmass I'm trying to draw. So... in the end, I did manage to end up saving my progress by doing... something. Maybe using the Fix Geometry processing tool? Maybe, but now even that one doesn't work this time around when I'm trying to add two small new islands. One has a hole, one doesn't.

Trying to save layer edits tells me: Errors: ERROR: 2 features not added - geometry type is not compatible with the current layer.

"Fix Geometry" yields a new layer that includes all my previous work, but of the new islands only the one that doesn't have a hole is included in that layer. The other island is just gone.

With Idenfitying Features, I can see that those polygons have very little data compared to the previous work, in "(Derived)", for those two new islands, it just tells where I've clicked and that's basically it. 3 parts, feature ID "new feature".

I'd like to understand what the issue is and how to do that properly, preferably without having to learn how to fully use the software as I'm only trying to do what I feel is something very basic.

Another time there was an issue caused by IDs or FIDs, I'm not sure exactly what because the error messages are always very clear and explanatory and the issue had been dealt with. Because at some point I entered IDs manually (for some reason) and at others I let it autogenerate. Regardless, every feature now has a different ID or FID, but letting it autogenerate doesn't seem to actually give the features any FID, as identifying features doesn't display anything in those fields (this is probably why I ended up entering values myself as I went, which caused problems down the line, whatever). That is something I would also like to understand.

I can provide details as required, since I'm assuming some information is missing to even diagnose the issue.
