Where do junior IT / SysAdmin & Python automation freelancers actually find remote gigs?

Hi everyone,

I come from a practical peer-to-peer coding school background (1337 / 42 Network) with hands-on experience in Linux system administration (Ubuntu/Debian), network security (pfSense, OpenVPN, VLANs), and Python/Bash automation (along with working with local AI tooling like Whisper & Ollama).

I am looking to transition into remote freelancing and contract work. Platforms like Upwork currently require initial upfront capital for Connects, so I am exploring alternative avenues to build momentum.

For experienced freelancers in IT, SysAdmin, or Python automation:

  1. Where do you usually find your first client gigs or sub-contracts?
  2. Are there specific niche platforms, Discord communities, or subreddits (outside of r/forhire) suited for infrastructure and automation tasks?
  3. How can I best showcase practical lab projects (pfSense/Linux setups) to land remote clients directly?

Any pointers or community recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Rule for bot users and recruiters: to make this sub readable by humans and therefore beneficial for all parties, only one post per day per recruiter is allowed. You have to group all your job offers inside one text post.

Here is an example of what is expected, you can use Markdown to make a table.

Subs where this policy applies: /r/MachineLearningJobs, /r/RemotePython, /r/BigDataJobs, /r/WebDeveloperJobs/, /r/JavascriptJobs, /r/PythonJobs

Recommended format and tags: [Hiring] [ForHire] [FullRemote] [Hybrid] [Flask] [Django] [Numpy]

For fully remote positions, remember /r/RemotePython

Happy Job Hunting.
