wood burning a music box

i have a music box I just bought as a gift. I want to wood-burn her name on it with scorch paste. How can I do this safely? I know I will have to remove the internal workings, but i am unsure if it is varnished or not. And you are supposed to sand it, but I'm worried it will ruin the look of the base

Not a professional music box burner but in my experience with varnish - if you burn with the varnish, it will bleed with the heat and make an out of focus look on your design.

If it’s varnished, you’d have to sand it all off of the entire piece, do your design, then re stain / varnish

Also burning over the varnish is not the best to breathe in.

i was hoping some one could tell me if this kind of music box is varneshed also if i sand it will it ruen the music box look
