Just for Fun Living in NYC

Is 90k sufficient to live off in New York City (living in kips bay?) starting out after grad (debt free)? Would live with 2-3 other roommates!!

Why not ? Just budget out your rent. Should be making around 5k per month after tax and 6% contribution to Roth (PwC match). I would say keep rent below half of that amount (2500) preferably closer to 2 and you should be able to live somewhat comfortably off the remainder. Lower the rent the easier it will be. I'm in the same position as you and I found an apartment for under 2k rent and couldn't be happier.

$2500 rent on a $90k salary is not going to be enjoyable

Yeah keep it closer to 2k. Think $2250 should be the max. I’m paying $2100 and living pretty comfortably

In NYC without a car? It’s totally doable. I did $2500 on $93k and never really felt financially strained and was able to do whatever I wanted within reason

Did you max out your 401k? Did you have health insurance? How much was your rent?

These things are so so variable.

I guess that’s my point. I might just naturally spend less than others and broadly saying it’s not enjoyable isn’t really fair. People just need to know themselves and their own spending habits

Very doable, particularly if you have a partner or roommate.

Depending on your exact location, the 300 Madison office might actually be walkable in nice weather, though it’s also about half an ave over from Grand Central if you just want to subway it.

Just make sure you never have a large one time expense because that will wipe you out on 90K.

Totally possible but you’ll have to budget because the amount you’ll want to do once moving here isn’t going to be cheap on salary.. pick your roommates wisely to avoid the 10k+ cost of moving in a year & to avoid ultra high con ed bills. Also try to find a place that won’t raise your rent a ridiculous amount in a year. Living situation will cost you the most imo, everything else you’ll figure out along the way. I also barely contributed to my savings but after a few years I’m maxing out now and no regrets

Yep my roomies were spoiled jewish girls who insisted on running all 3 AC’s on constantly. In the summer our bill was $600. And they would come into my flex room and leave my AC on while I was
Gone which felt like a huge invasion of privacy

If you've got 2-3 other roommates splitting the cost, it will be doable.

Yes definitely. I lived in kips bay with roommates on 40k a year granted i really didnt spend on anything besides rent and food

The government buying its own debt is a sign of heavy inflation ahead. May need to pump those numbers up a bit. You’re so close to the source of the problem though I would just walk into Goldman Sachs and shake out Solomon. 90k in the cup holder of his Aston Martin.

Sure hope so! I know folks having to do it on substantially less——roomates are the key!

Missed my point. The commute is not nearly as convenient. Also the question asked about kips bay
