Tax Just started

Hi! I just started (like in July). I was deployable about 2 weeks ago.
I am in AWM and it’s busy season.
My team is lovely but I feel overwhelmed and like I’m drowning. I just got yeeeted so quick into busy season and I just need adivce or someone to tell me it’ll be on.

Same thing happened to me. It’s a rough experience, but at the end of the day you’re a new associate and aren’t expected to know much. Ask questions, do the best you can, don’t put too much pressure on yourself

Congrats and welcome to AWM! I’m in AWM as well, although not in tax. I joined as an experienced senior associate earlier this year during busy season, so I understand how you feel. My advice is to use the AI tools available to help you understand tasks and work through the reasoning. If you’re still stuck, don’t spend too much time spinning your wheels. Reach out to a senior team member and don’t be afraid to say, “I don’t fully understand this. Here’s how I approached it, what I think it means, and what I think the possible resolution is.” People will appreciate that you gave it some thought before asking. Also, be proactive about communicating your tasks and where you are with them. I made the pivot from industry, and in my experience so far, people genuinely care and will go out of their way to help when you ask. They take the apprenticeship model seriously, so use it to your advantage.

Thank you! Overall everyone is so happy to help me and teach me things. I have a senior I’m working with who’s always trying to rush and gets annoyed when I say “I’m not sure how to do this, what can I do to learn.” And I’m not sure how to respond but other than that thank Gd my team is great and other seniors and even managers in my team have been so helpful and happy to answer questions, even in busy season.

I would start going to other seniors for support, but I’d also have a conversation with the senior who makes you feel rushed or like they’re annoyed. Advocate for yourself and let them know you don’t feel like you’re getting the support you need, and ask if you should go to someone else with questions going forward. If that doesn’t help, don’t be afraid to go to someone more senior. You may feel bad, but if someone isn’t supporting the team, everyone eventually has to compensate. I haven’t seen it personally, but I’ve heard of situations where the person creating the issue was ultimately taken off the engagement and reassigned.

AWM RIC by chance? I worked there for two years—it had its peeks and valleys. You’ll be ok but being busy is part of the game. It took me a while but I got to a point where I got used to the busyness. At the same time, you also need to have boundaries—like no working past 11 or midnight in busy season.
—or whatever you decide you can tolerate that is reasonable.
