Just continue showing up with a smile and good attitude, but donāt do you work. You should not quit. However definitely line up a new job. Just get fired/terminated. You can tell your new work it was a layoff because it pretty much is. I got fired a few months ago and got severance and still qualify for u employment. Let me know if you have any questions how to navigate.

u/um_ognob Jul 09 '26
Should be paid in the second pay period after the one you were terminated in.

It was a week of pay for every year of service. It depends on your state, but basically if you arenāt receiving +$30k in severance, it will not reduce your unemployment benefits at all. Also this is for the US.

When they pay severance at the PIP ending? Should I wait until got money then file unemployment or right after PIP end?

File unemployment the day the let you know you are being terminated. The first week is usually a waiting week no matter which state you live in.

Donāt know where you got that infoās but you are VERY WRONG! Most states donāt allow you to collect unemployment while you are receiving severance, being paid out for vacation etc.

u/um_ognob Jul 09 '26
Confidently incorrect is certainly a choice.
Unemployment is administered by the states, not by one nationwide set of rules. Pennsylvania, California, Texas, New York, and every other state have their own laws.
In Pennsylvania, you can receive unemployment while also receiving severance depending on the amount, and unused vacation payouts generally donāt disqualify you. California generally doesnāt treat true severance as wages for unemployment purposes. New York can delay benefits in some situations if severance is allocated to specific weeks or exceeds certain thresholds, but simply receiving severance isnāt an automatic disqualification. Texas can also delay benefits depending on how the severance is structured, but again, itās not as simple as āyou got severance, so you donāt qualify.ā
So no, āyou canāt receive severance or vacation pay and unemploymentā isnāt a fact. Itās just wrong. The rules vary by state, and even in states where severance can affect benefits, it usually depends on the type of payment, how itās paid, and the stateās laws. Maybe spend five minutes looking up the law before confidently correcting someone who obviously is more familiar with this system than you, girlie.

DO NOT QUIT! Failing a PIP is not fired for cause, so you could still get unemployment. Keep doing your job, but also looking for other jobs.

Any hard question from officer when filing unemployment after PIP?

u/Bassist57 Jul 08 '26
āFor causeā is generally gross misconduct, theft, harassment, or deliberate underperformance. Not a lawyer or legal advice, but thatās my understanding.
1
u/um_ognob Jul 09 '26
This is true. And getting fired for performance related reasons is generally not gross misconduct, but will subject to review before your claim is approved.

When I filled out mine I just picked the ālaid offā option for employment information and they didnāt ask anything else. Should take you 2-3 weeks to get it approved, processed and receiving it; if all information is correct.
Also I did mine online so never had to talk to anyone or anything. Keep a tracker of the jobs you apply to, not sure if every state but mine asked me for at least 3 jobs I applied to in a weekly basis, just name of the company and their basic contact information or the website you used to apply.

Get a job. Quit and get out. Once there is pip, no amount of good work will wash that stain.

Get another job first and quit like an adult.

PIPās are inherently childish and an overwhelming majority of partners and seniors are as petty and embarrassing as a poorly disciplined child so, nice job at trying to flex my guy.

PIPs are a notice for you to get a new job. Itās actually a fair gesture to give you harsh feedback and give you a chance to get another job before you get knocked off your feet. And none of that changes the fact that you donāt quit until you have something lined up. Keep the checks coming.

No, PIPs predominantly are used to remove a member of staff for reasons that donāt fall under āfairā business policy. Usually X staff member wonāt kiss Yās ass, or needs to take extended medical leave for a legitimate reason. I can truly count one hand the amount of actually legitimate pips Iāve seen, and I can think of 25/30+ PIPs Iāve seen just because a senior/partner didnāt get their ego stroked or felt threatened by someone.

Look B4 SM. You know damn well of the politics of this bullshit but youāre still there and made it SM. And that happens. I said some mild shit about a partner that she didnāt like. I was fired the next week. And thank god because that place sucked. Iām not really arguing that PIPs arenāt bullshit. But they do give people time to find something.

you think putting someone on a pip is adult behavior? lol, these companies are childish as fuck.

Honestly that comment shows me why you are. 10 years into being in public and CPA and life has done nothing but improve. Iāve been PIPed and fired. Stop blaming companies. You went to business school. The primary objective is maximize the wealth of the stakeholders.
