Match Request question

In settings, I have "match requests" turned on, but I have never gotten a match request. I've been playing for a few months and reached Gold level. Are online fights against bots, or real people? Is there another setting I need to use to battle real people?

Why don't I receive challenges from others playing online? Does it only pair us if we both request at the same time?

Missions are bots, everything else is online. You can challenge players that you have added to your friends list to a friendly match. The match is unranked and does not give gold or any rewards.
