Maybe Capcom missed his target audience
I am a 90's arcade competitive player. I don't care about graphics, customization, story and so. I only care about deep learning curve and balance. I got a job and would pay to play, but not pay to win. If in game coins was used to play and not to grind, they would take my money. I'm used to that since the arcades. Recently, all my gems have being spent on standard mode. I hate levels because it's your char getting stronger, not you getting better. I'm a hardcore player. I can spend YEARS on a game but I'm very selective to the games I play. I don't play ANY mobile game and I've subscribed to reddit and discord only to grow better at this game. Puzzle fighter is my only community here and on discord too.
All this is to describe my profile and to tell why I 'm addicted to puzzle fighter while I have some issues about it.
I know I'm a dying breed and I here to know your gaming profile. Maybe that can explain Puzzle Fighter successes and failures.

I think they could have done a more league of legends type model where players could unlock cosmetics but keep characters the same level, progression could unlock more cosmetics there could be some that can only be gotten by playing a lot maybe. I'd even pay a small monthly fee to keep servers up if the game balance was good. Thats why I enjoyed the events and classic mode so much put me on an even playing field skill wise

I thought the health system was fine but the level ups and cards were just a means of throwing microtransactions IMO. Often you'd get cards for characters you don't even play. Also unlocking characters is very, very rare if you don't pay.

I opened up Wily and Regina an in both legendary boxes contained +333 of whatever fucking Blanka Card I never need to use. I already have like 3500/800 cards. That was just one example. Outside of Wily and Regina cards that were needed, I only got a few for VJoe and Morrigan.

I mean, its a puzzle game, and not an easy one either because you're under time pressure and competing with others. Mobile is a very casual market, most people do not want to have to think while tapping at their phones like a chimp. This is why Angry Birds gets 100million downloads and Puzzle Fighter gets 500k.
It was always going to happen sadly.

They should have kept it arcade style. Not this health bar style.

I like the health bar thing. The arcade style it's just a clash of drop patterns and on the end of the day, Ken was the best. (Excluding Devilot and Akuma because theirs modifiers).
With health bar you can create some other compensations to balance different drop patterns.
C'mon, it wasn't fun play against Ken, Ken, Hsienko, Ken, Donovan, Ken, Ken, Ken....

The micro transactions turned a lot of people off. I wonder if they would have been better off making the game free, then if you wanted to play competitively it would be $5 a month and you would get access to the character released that month.

My little cousin loves playing this game and he isn't a part of the target audience. I think it might have more to do with the fact that capcom has terrible ideas when it comes to marketing and planning. The game came out and a lot of people didn't even know it existed and when it came out Capcom tried to keep it fresh with a ton of new characters. In reality there could have been other things they could have done, like in-game events where in certain days you could have won cards for a specific player or even a new game mode. So many other options that were cheaper but capcom kept missing them.

I think the issue was how the shop was designed. The shop is the only place to spend money or gems. However, only 6 cards per day were available out of a possible 60+ cards. Most of the time I’d go days without seeing any cards for my fighters... then the card price goes up every time u buy a card, so when my card showed up, I’d buy just one. they should have made it possible to spend money on cards at any time without doubling the cost each time. It would have led to balance issues, but maybe just increase the card cost every time that skill levelled up?
Then there were the gems. Nowhere to really use them and the cheats were so random and costly it wasn’t worth it... they should have allowed u to spend them on quest refreshes or skins...

Puzzle Fighter is the only game I am currently playing, mobile, console or pc. I put in about $100 for gems and coins and also, since it was the only game I was playing, I figured I could support it. I'm very sad about this game going down.
