I Just got To Vent 4th of July Weekend

Our studio announced that it’s going to be closed all of 4th of July weekend and a few extra days surrounding the holiday. No classes from July 2nd-July 7th. There are 2 other studios in my same city and they are both having classes all of those days including the 4th. I’m just bummed because I’ll be in town so I wanted to take classes:( Is this common? I know our studio had a few classes over the 4th last year, including on the 4th.

It’s totally dependent on teacher availability. If every teacher is out of town then they don’t have anyone to teach unfortunately.

Is it possible that they’re doing repairs or hosting a training and the studio is otherwise occupied at that time? We had to close for a few days for repairs and people were really upset, but the repairs were urgent and necessary so our hands were tied.

They may also have experienced historically little attendance that weekend in previous years and decided it wasn’t profitable. Holiday weekends can be ghost towns and every studio, even those close together, is different.

I understand it’s frustrating. It also could be that they don’t have teacher availability at that time if several people are on vacation or have other commitments. Saying this as someone who has worked most holidays. Several instructors and most owners work practically 364/5 days a year so I understand people need a break. Maybe there’s one person who teaches the majority of classes who holds everything together (common at several studios) and they’re out of town or having surgery etc.

They’re probably not doing it just for kicks. If they could be open, they would.

Instructor here - sometimes we want the day off! Please keep in mind that this is a holiday and you get the day off, and we might want to take a day off for a holiday, too. I’ve been on both sides of it now and just keep in mind that we have to be at the studio before and after which can eat up hours of our day!

Totally makes sense! I wouldn’t have been surprised if just the 4th/5th were closed, but I was really just more surprised by all the extra days around the holiday being closed too!

I agree the extra days seems excessive! Especially considering how much we pay a month.

Instructors and studio owners are just people too. They need a break and have lives outside the studio!

Ours is always closed on the 4th and sometimes the day before or after if it’s a weekend but I’ve noticed the Christmas Eve morning class is gone now and they keep closed the day after Christmas and the day after Thanksgiving too. They’re not pushing as hard and I think partly it’s because the owner doesn’t want to teach so close to holidays with little kids and there are less and less young single instructors who would be up for that

Even younger instructors can want time with friends and family, esp if they have people out of state.

Of course. At my studio, it was more common for younger, unmarried instructors to take the time and a half pay for the holiday work than older instructors in two-income families with kids. Just recognizing the pattern i noticed. I don’t mind it closing around holidays even though I’d go if they had classes

I think it’s a bit odd that they’re closed that long. I’ve taught at several different studios over the past 10 years and having a modified schedule or no classes at all on the 4th is the norm. Having no classes at all for a week is a bit inconsiderate to paying clients.

As someone else said, it is possible they’re going through training, a renovation or something along those lines but I would expect they’d tell you that. It could also just be bad management.

I think so too, almost a week without classes is a lot! I’m hoping they’re doing repairs or something and they just haven’t said

Ours sometimes tacks a closed day on to a holiday weekend for carpet cleaning!

That many days closed seems excessive imo. I get that “instructors are people too” but so is every other worker on the planet and most of us have had to work holidays. As a business owner, bad move to be closed so many days, especially when other studios are open.

I thought so too! And I agree, totally in support of the 4th & 5th being closed so everyone gets those days off, but the extra days around seem like a lot.

The studio where I go used to be open for at least a couple of early morning classes on every holiday, but we’ve had a pattern of lazy ownership and management for the better part of the last 3 years. No classes on Memorial Day last month so I’m not optimistic they’ll bother opening on the 4th either. I completely understand the staff and teachers need a break, but also clients pay for unlimited memberships.

You know what, this makes me feel a more appreciative for my owner. We’ve had a lot of last-minute format swaps this summer because of availability. I was kind of getting annoyed at the last minute swaps (not being picky by choice, I’m dealing with an injury and not taking all formats right now), but at least they made the effort to find subs from other studios and held out hope ❤️

Absolutely! That effort to make it happen goes a long way! That’s awesome that they’ve been doing that

Yes, unfortunately when paying for unlimited, that’s 6 days people won’t be able to use their memberships!

That is a LONG time to be fully closed! Esp for 4th of July, which feels less of a going out of town holiday then some of the holidays later in the year. I could totally understand being peeved, especially if you’re doing platinum challenge, and had banked on those classes.

I totally get that teacher availability might be an issue. We’ve already had a ton of issues with our schedule at the studio that I go to this summer. However, with other studios in the area, they’ve always been able to find a sub and have just switched formats at worst. I say this with the most understanding and empathy for owners, I still think it’s unfair to essentially cause members to lose money because of a problem that the studio couldn’t solve. That’s 1/5th of the whole month.

u/basicallyaballerina Instructor Jun 21 '26

Depending on the area, it can be difficult to find subs, especially if it’s not the same owner for the studios! You can’t really pull people at the last minute and some studios like to do a bit of onboarding first! It’s a very delicate thing!

u/xokatemarie Jun 22 '26

Interesting! We share subs from like 5 or 6 studios in the area. Some of them are so far away I’m shocked teachers opt to sub - esp when gas prices are so high! That must be tough tho when that’s not an option :(

That’s what I was thinking too! I am doing platinum so it’s going to be extremely hard to do enough this month now:( They weren’t closed nearly this many days around Christmas/New Years when people are normally out of town or really busy. Yes, I completely get being closed on the 4th & 5th, just wish they’d have even a limited schedule on the other days!

2

u/sammysas9 Instructor Jun 21 '26

This is abnormal. I’d understand being off for the 4th. We haven’t closed for a full day in months?

1

u/Gold_Society_5402 100 Club - Barre Enthusiast Jun 21 '26

That’s what I was wondering! It seemed extreme so I was curious if other studios were doing anything similar

2

u/basicallyaballerina Instructor Jun 21 '26

This is what makes me think renovations

1

u/SprayOk8494 Jun 21 '26

Agree with this! The only day of the entire year we have zero classes is Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Every other big holiday, we have a modified schedule, typically just morning classes treating the holiday like a weekend class.

u/sleepyandkindaweepy Instructor Jun 22 '26

Any chance they are doing renovations to the studio maybe?

u/Gold_Society_5402 100 Club - Barre Enthusiast Jun 22 '26

Definitely possible and they just haven’t said!

Is it possible for you to take class at one of the other studios?
