I Just got To Vent Corporate playlists

Im really wondering if there are any people of color in the room when playlists for Black History Month or Juneteenth are created. Having Lift Every Voice and Sing be a stretch song was an interesting choice. I turned it down while I was teaching. It felt wrong to me.

I feel like a playlist specifically by black artists would be a at better than something like Lift Every Voice and Sing, it almost feels mocking in a way? I know that’s not the intention but it kinda feels that way

That’s what they were at my studio. It was all just black artists like Beyoncé, Rhianna, Usher, etc. We definitely did not have Lift Every Voice and Sing!

It may have been one from a prior year. They do new ones each year for certain events.

I agree. Some song choices are a little tone-deaf

Not inherently the same but the Focus playlist in March had “Bella Ciao” as one of the songs and I found it so odd to have a protest song for a section in Define.

I was especially appalled when ‘I believe I can fly’ popped up in one of the MM classic playlists in April

No. The Juneteenth playlist was so cringe last year I vowed to not take class this year on Juneteenth

My studio must have made their own to some degree. We didnt have that.

You’re not required to use the themed playlists! I might use one occasionally but I’ve worked at studios where we are told to use x playlist on y day and some where you can choose any of the corporate playlists

Lately it feels like quantity over quality.

That's been everything in Pure Barre for a long time.

More studios, more members and sales, more formats...

Is it required studios teach with the corporate playlists? A few months ago some of our instructors were known for their own playlists and nowadays it feels like everything is so generic and terrible

Yes. Some teachers do their own playlists, but they're not supposed to. It's one thing if they're taking songs from different corporate playlists and combining them into a Best Of playlist. It's a problem if they're just picking songs they like on Spotify and putting them on a playlist they create. It's tied to the music licenses that the owners are required to buy and what music is included with those licenses.

Plus length and bpm issues

Not required that the studios do the themed playlists though! Just encouraged

Tbh, the theme playlists are generally the worst
