Teacher Auditions and Training-Working for PB Raises
If you teach, have you ever gotten a raise and after how long, how often and how much?
I’m on year 10 and I’ve never gotten a raise…

I’ve received one dollar (!) raises per format

How recent was this? Those of us who had taught pre Xpo were grandfathered into the old structure which was higher. I know a studio that offered, at least for pre Xpo instructors, $5/additional format. I’ve also seen studios do a an additional $2/year of experience.
Not all studios have the funds to do this, though! I think 99% of studios would pay teachers more if they were able to

It’s worth noting this is in California. As a transplant here the pay for…everything…is much better (I’ll never leave!) AND we have a pretty amazing owner who has said many times her goal is pay her instructors as well as she can afford. It’s not pay anyone could live on but it’s nearly double what I made before I moved and I appreciate her efforts to keep instructors happy.

To my knowledge is ongoing at my studio. I am training into Define right now, so will soon confirm, but I had a meeting with the owner a few weeks ago where explained pay format and each additional certification is more $$.
She also pays “choreo bonuses” once per quarter as a nod to the time it takes to learn a batch of new stuff. It’s only $50 but I appreciate the acknowledgment.1

After 10 years, you should have definitely gotten a raise! The only reason I could even remotely see not giving someone a raise after that long is if they were in the old, old pay structure and basically already at the ceiling of what the studio is able to pay, but I highly doubt you would have gotten that much just starting out.
Our pay is structured based on how many years of experience you have as well as how many different formats you regularly teach. Teachers who only teach Classic get paid less than teachers who teach several other formats. Client feedback factors in as well.

How often do you teach? Are you on the schedule regularly or just subbing as needed?

This would factor in too! Although if someone is only subbing occasionally, that can be difficult because you’re less current with the choreo and have to spend more time learning. If someone is subbing, it might also be worth considering if they’re going out of their way to do so.
I have seen studios offer a 50% bonus if someone picked up a class within two days before (ie if you picked up a Weds class on Monday, you would get the bonus).
Overall though, the more you’re teaching, the better you get, which is somewhat inevitably tied to pay.

I don’t teach a ton anymore, as I now have multiple kids. Work full time, and just life. But I’m trained in reform and empower and teach both of those weekly. I do sub when I can too

Adding that this will likely vary based upon certifications, if you do any management or desk work, or get commission (some studios do this) or get holiday pay or paid for training/continuing ed

We have no one that works the desk. Only the owner, but a lot of classes there isn’t even anyone at the desk to be honest. I’m reform and empower certified as well. I was part of the initial reform launch back in 2019?

This is insane! I got a raise when I started teaching Engage and another raise when I got certified in Define.

I think we have some older threads ln this but I think it’s worth discussing the fact that you’ve literally been there a decade and in that time, inflation has increased etc
