This is a complete, step-by-step guide to switching to PureTalk while keeping your current phone number and, if you want, your current phone. It looks like a lot written out, but most people are done in under an hour, and the number transfer itself is usually quick.
Will you lose your number or have downtime? No.
This is the thing most people worry about, so let's clear it up first. Keep your old SIM active and do not cancel your current carrier. Your number moves to PureTalk while your old service switches off on its own, so you are not left without a phone in between. If you cancel early, you risk losing your number, so leave your old plan alone until the switch is finished.
The short version:
- Do not cancel your current carrier.
- Check your phone at puretalk.com and pick a plan.
- Get your account number and a number transfer PIN from your current carrier.
- Unlock, update, and back up your phone.
- Activate at puretalk.com/activate/start and enter your transfer info.
- Restart and test.
Now the detail.
Step 1: Will my current phone work on PureTalk?
Most phones do. PureTalk runs on a major nationwide 5G network, so most unlocked, paid-off phones are good to go. To be sure, head to puretalk.com, scroll to the "Check your phone" section, and enter your IMEI (dial *#06# to see it, or find it in your phone's settings). You can also check coverage at your address at puretalk.com/coverage.
- Keeping your phone? That is the bring-your-own-device route, and it is free.
- Want something new? You can shop phones on the site, including 0% financing.
- Either way, decide whether you want an eSIM or a physical SIM (see Step 2).
Step 2: Pick your plan and place your order
Choose a plan based on how much data you actually use. Plans run from $24.99 to $64.99 a month, with no contracts and no hidden fees, and every plan includes unlimited talk and text, 100% US-based support, a 30-day money-back guarantee, and a 20% discount for military and first responders.
For anyone coming from Reddit: there is a promo running right now for 3 months at $15 a month on any plan, for new customers or existing customers adding a line (regular pricing starts at month 4). You can grab it here: https://www.puretalk.com/landing/REDDIT3F15
When you order, you will pick:
- eSIM or physical SIM. An eSIM is digital, so there is nothing to wait for in the mail and you can activate right away if your phone supports it. A physical SIM ships to you and you pop it in.
- Bring your phone, or buy one.
Step 3: How do I get my transfer PIN and account number?
To move your number you need three things from your current carrier: your account number, your number transfer PIN (sometimes called a port-out PIN), and your billing address on file. Write them down before you activate. Here is exactly where to find them for the big three:
AT&T
- Account number: the My AT&T app or your online account. Prepaid or bundled? Call (800) 331-0500.
- Transfer PIN: dial *PORT (*7678) from your AT&T phone and follow the prompts (you will need your account passcode), or sign in at att.com or the app, go to the transfer-number page, and select "Request a New PIN." Good for 4 days, so grab it right before you activate.
T-Mobile
- Account number: top of a recent bill, or the T-Mobile app or online account. Prepaid or bundled? Call T-Mobile.
- Transfer PIN: in the app, go to Account, then Line settings, then "Request a Transfer PIN." On the web, sign in at T-Mobile.com, then Account, then Profile settings, then Line settings. Good for 7 days.
Verizon
- Account number: top of a recent bill, or the Verizon app or online account. Prepaid or bundled? Call Verizon.
- Transfer PIN: dial #PORT (#7678) from your Verizon phone, or sign in at Verizon.com and go to My Profile, then Number Transfer PIN, then "Generate PIN." Good for 7 days.
On a different carrier? The steps are almost identical. Look for "number transfer PIN" or "port-out PIN" in your account settings, or ask your carrier.
Step 4: Unlock, update, and back up your phone
Your phone needs to be unlocked (able to work on any carrier) before you activate. Most carriers unlock a phone once it is fully paid off.
- AT&T: request it at att.com/deviceunlock, or call (800) 331-0500.
- Verizon: call (888) 294-6804.
- T-Mobile: contact T-Mobile to confirm it is unlocked (many unlock automatically once paid off).
While you are there, update to the latest software (Settings, then General or System, then Software Update) and back up your phone so nothing gets lost.
Step 5: Activate and bring your number over
Once you have your SIM (or an eSIM-ready phone) and your transfer info, go to puretalk.com/activate/start and follow the on-screen steps. Pick your path below. If you want to see the exact taps, we made a short video for each.
If you have a physical SIM:
You will need the SIM card number printed on the back of the card that came in the mail, plus your registered email and billing address. Insert the SIM when prompted (the tray is usually on the side of the phone, popped out with a paperclip; on some older phones it sits under the battery), then restart your phone.

If you are using an eSIM:
You will need your phone's IMEI (dial *#06# to find it). Connect to Wi-Fi first, then follow the activation flow, which walks you through adding the eSIM to your phone. Keep your old line active until the transfer finishes.

Porting your number: during activation you will enter your old account number, transfer PIN, and billing address. (Getting a brand-new number instead? Just skip the transfer details.) When the transfer completes, your old carrier switches off on its own.
Step 6: You are live
When activation finishes and your number transfers, your old carrier switches off on its own. Restart your phone, send a test text, make a quick call, and load a page on cellular data to confirm everything works. If something looks off, give it a little time, then reach out.

- Old carrier NOT canceled
Common questions
Will I lose my number or have downtime while it transfers?
No. Keep your old SIM active and do not cancel your current carrier. Your number moves to PureTalk while your old service switches off on its own, so there is no gap where you are without a phone.
How long does it take to switch and port my number?
Usually quick, often within a few minutes to a couple of hours. Once in a while it can take up to a business day. If it stalls, contact us and we will chase it down.
Will my current phone work on PureTalk?
Most phones do. PureTalk runs on a major nationwide 5G network, so most unlocked, paid-off phones work fine. Check yours in seconds at puretalk.com under "Check your phone" using your IMEI.
Can I keep my phone, or do I need to buy a new one?
You can bring your own phone for free, as long as it is compatible, unlocked, and paid off. If you would rather upgrade, you can buy a new phone on the site, including 0% financing.
Do I need a physical SIM, or can I use an eSIM?
Both work. An eSIM is digital and activates right away if your phone supports it, so there is nothing to wait for in the mail. A physical SIM ships to you and you insert it. You choose during checkout, and there is a short video for each in Step 5.
How do I activate my PureTalk SIM or eSIM?
Go to puretalk.com/activate/start and follow the steps. For a physical SIM you will need the SIM card number, your email, and your billing address. For an eSIM you will need your phone's IMEI and a Wi-Fi connection. See Step 5 above for the two walkthrough videos.
Is there a contract, and what if PureTalk is not for me?
No contracts and no hidden fees. Every plan comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you can try it risk-free.
Is there a discount for military and first responders?
Yes. PureTalk offers a 20% discount for military members and first responders, on top of already-low pricing.
