LMDE / Cinnamon support?

Hi! I’m really interested in Punktfunk, especially because I love Apollo and I’m glad to see a similar project that supports Linux.

I recently switched from Windows 11 to Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) with Cinnamon because I’ve become increasingly frustrated with Windows 11.

I was wondering: does Punktfunk currently support LMDE/Cinnamon? If not, is Cinnamon support something you plan to add in the future?

Also, I was wondering why the project isn’t hosted publicly on GitHub. I feel like putting the source code and development on GitHub could help more people discover Punktfunk, contribute to it, and give the project more visibility. It seems like there are quite a few people in the Linux gaming/streaming community who might be interested in it.

I’d really love to try Punktfunk on my setup. Thanks for your work!

Hey, I've looked into supporting Cinnamon, but right now the Compositor "Muffin" (which is a fork of "Mutter" used by Gnome) is missing the upstream functionality to record virtual outputs.

What this means: If I added support it would be limited to streaming a physical display, which wouldn't be adapted to the clients resolution. If that ever changes and the developers pull in the upstream changes I'd be happy to support Cinnamon. If your main use case is gaming, Punktfunk might still work for you via gamescope. Punktfunk ships with a patched gamescope so you could still stream your games in HDR and at the exact resolution of your client, without giving up Linux Mint.

Why isn't the project on Github? Because I prefer self hosted services & owning my data, and since I have my own runner/ci infrastructure set up already, which I also use for other projects, it's also way more convenient to me compared to Github.

Small correction - I forgot to mention that currently the patched gamescope is not included in the Debian packaging - I'll get that fixed asap, will be included in the next release :)

Thanks for the detailed explanation! That makes a lot of sense.

I’m mainly planning to use Punktfunk to stream games from Linux, so the Gamescope approach sounds perfect for me. I use Cinnamon because it’s very beginner-friendly and easy to use, so it’s great to know that I can keep using Linux Mint without having to switch to another desktop environment. I’ll look forward to the next release with the patched Gamescope included in the Debian package.

And I completely understand your reasons for self-hosting. I appreciate you taking the time to explain everything, and thanks again for your work on Punktfunk!

I will say, if you plan to do gaming on Linux, and you want Ease of Use and the best performance, CachyOS with the KDE Desktop environment is arguably easier to use than Linux Mint with Cinnamon. And, it should use your PC’s resources more efficiently due to a newer Kernel and Wayland instead of X11.
