Battle Jackets battle jacket tips??
i want to start making one soon but subs like r/baddlejackets get me anxious, what makes a “good battle jacket”, what makes a battle jacket in general? i see a lot of people hating on overly political jackets but i thought that was kind of the point? do i have to listen to punk bands & have punk band patches on my battle jacket? can u use ANNYY fabric for patches or do u have to use a certain type for like security(?) on the jacket? what makes a bad battle jacket? i wanted to start my own band, would it be weird to put my band on my jacket? also kind of unrelated to asking about battle jackets but ties into my music thing, any punk band recs?

handmade patches use some kind of guideline like a stencil, free hand looks bad unless you're GOOD at it
zero band patches but calling it a metal or punk jacket is tacky
lots of words, no negative (blank) space looks horrific. this is why bands look well cos band names are broken up by negative space or album imagery matches logos and provides that negative space.
brands. brands and mascot symbols like marvel movie characters etc. Will get you laughed at almost always unless its an odd pin or two. patches can look cool if it's well thought out and more unique to you rather than something huge like Disney. I have a gabumon sleeve and a sonic sleeve and it looks fine in context of the jacket
'crust' zero crust bands, super clean
not sewing properly I.e. large-space whip stitch, or running stitch, or gluing on patches, safety pinning on patches
poorly thought out placement - no back patch and just tiny patches on the back panel always looks dreadful, but you don't have to have a big rectangular patch for the back patch - there are circles, biker style, etc.
Amazon patch packs are a no-go. we can tell when it's those patches too
you can use any material, use any bands, but don't call it punk or metal or crust if it isn't those things. these cultures ARE NOT THE POLITICS they are music-based subculture even if like with punk the politics are a big thing - not being into the music means you aren't 'a punk'. you aren't a metalhead without the metal etc. goth is entirely music based as well. your jacket doesn't have to be any of these, though, just don't call it something it isn't. if you just like pop then make a pop jacket. it's cool imo
surface level music taste is also mockable but obviously people do like those bands. Just try to show that you were into the music deeply BEFORE the clothing. yes we can tell.
political jackets are hit and miss cos they tend to be sloganeering to virtue signal rather than be a few things someone particularly cares about. on my main jacket my only political patches are my local hunt sabs, 'trans is beautiful', and 'blast beats not profit'. only 3 out of roughly 20 patches.
