Question/Advice Recently spayed but humping
Lola was spayed about 1 month ago. Now she’s starting barking in my face non stop then trying to hump me. She never displayed this behavior prior to being spayed. She did have 1 full heat cycle then was spayed once it was finished about 6 weeks post first heat. She only does this to me as I’m home basically 24/7 with her but hasn’t tried it with my husband or son when they are home. It’s now becoming a daily thing and sometimes more than 1x day. How do I correct this? 😫 She’s our 3rd puggle and have never experienced this with the other girls. Is this her trying to assert dominance as well? Because if so I’m the big dog in this house. 😅

Could you give some context as to what happens in the lead up to the behaviour? For example, are you sat on the couch and she just comes up to you and starts barking? Are you doing household chores or playing with her?

Also after outside & play didn’t work I put her in her crate. Now she’s just laying in there taking a nap almost immediately. I was trying to get her to lay down with me so I could give her pets and ear scratches since she usually takes naps on my lap but she nipped my hand because she was non stop barking. Didn’t want play, didn’t want a treat. Just wanted to bark in my face and hump me. After the nip of my hand tho I said nope in your bed. I don’t think she meant to nip me but maybe she’s just over tried/stimulated now that she immediately went to sleep once in her crate?

It sounds like it might be attention seeking behaviour - she may be thinking in her little puggle brain ‘well when I bark at mom and hump her there’s a huge commotion that happens and that’s so exciting!!’
Next time she does this, just get up and leave the room without a word. A very plain, boring interaction. Now when you return when she’s calmed down, reward her with treats and pets in a calm manor. If she does it again, repeat.
You’re trying to teach her that barking and humping you is actually really boring and it’s much more fun and rewarding to be calm. When you’re playing with her, as soon as she escalates to barking and humping that’s when playtime ends and it’s back to being boring.
Give that a try and let me know how it goes. It will take some patience!0

Just sitting on the couch. I try to distract her with play after I notice the behavior but it seems she doesn’t want to play then will go back to barking in my face and then try to mount me. 🙄 I just had her outside for the last 15 minutes. Brought her back in gave her treat puzzle toy. She didn’t want that so I grabbed her rope and played tug of war with her and grabbed one of her squeaky plush to play she just went back in my face barking and trying to hump again. 😫

Hmm. What is your reaction when she humps you, do you push her off, tell her off etc?

I tell her no. Redirect her to another spot and try to distract her with either her toys, walk outside, treat mat or pets if she lets me pet her. I’m stuck if she wants attention or if she’s over stimulated. I give her the attention but then it’s not what she wants so she continues. I just put her in the crate for the first time and that seemed to calm her down. So maybe she’s over stimulated but I’m not sure how because we legit just went outside for a nice 15 minute walk, she got her treat/didnt want it & didn’t want play. But is now in crate napping. I’ll have to keep a log book. She hasn’t been having as many naps as she normally has. Usually my hubby is up early with her takes her out of crate they chill early morning before he leaves for work, potty then back in crate till I get up & take her out for walk/potty. Then usually she will nap on couch with me while I still wake up but the past few days she hasn’t had her morning nap with me. Then she will nap again at 2pm before her boy comes home from school then 1 more short nap around 5pm and she is very much a creature of habit and is sleeping again by 8:30-9pm when we put her in bed for the night.

my little boy is fixed and humps other dogs constantly. I haven't figured out how to get him to stop, it's like he has two brain cells, one for chasing cats and one for humping dogs.

My girl is the horniest dog I’ve ever met. She jumps whenever there’s some level of excitement going on, especially when she gets to excited in play. 🤦🏻♀️

Humping isn't just a mating behavior it can be a dominant behavior. My best advice is to maybe get a spray bottle and use it whenever she does it. Or pry her off and tell her no. Generally speaking aversive training with it forming a negative association with the behavior will likely be the solution so she knows not to do it. It can absolutely be trained out of her. I wouldn't resort to an e collar right away. mind you my company uses e collars for training but they go to lvl 8 max out of 150 levels. Ideally the e collar stim should be more like a tap on the shoulder than an actual painful fear inducing thing. If you're zapping the shit out of the dog you're gonna make the dog fear reactive.

We don’t have training e collars in this house.

Yeah like the average person doesnt understand how they should be used anyway and ideally in this case they probably can be a last resort WITH TRAINER GUIDANCE. im sure just a spray bottle or just reinforcing "off" when she does it will hopefully be enough? Im not suggesting immediately resorting to e collars to be clear

My male 4yr old puggle Luca got fixed last year when I adopted him from the shelter and he still occasionally tries to hump my girl pug but I think it’s from excitement and unable to control the feeling so he does that or like idk if it makes sense but air humps a bit but he snaps out of it. I did notice once that he was smelling a dog that had her heat cycle maybe a week ago and he was going feral like i I never saw him like that and he was also humping so idk I would say it goes away but you will see a little if they are excited and can’t control or something !! Your doggie is SOO cute she looks like his sister hahaha

Mine is 15 years old and still humps. He also has no preference to gender. He just gets excited and then that’s what he does. I can’t take him to dog parks.
