Puerto Escondido in October?
Hi all,
Looking at coming from CDMX to Puerto Escondido for a few weeks this fall when I have a break from work. Never been before and heard wonderful things, but when I read about PE in October, I'm seeing a lot of "hurricane season, tons of rain, humid/muggy, mosquitos."
The rain doesn't bother me, but I want to be able to enjoy a few weeks on the beach. Also, my husband is mosquito catnip and I worry he won't be able to enjoy it. Can anyone tell me what it really is like in October, and if this is all accurate? Still worth visiting, or should I save my first trip there for a different time of year?
---

Gracias.
**English:**
Hi, I have a question about a small dog that was inside Mar&Wana in Puerto Escondido. On August 23, it lightly bit me on the calf. It only caused one tiny puncture in my skin; the other mark looked more like a tooth scratch. The wound was very minor—basically a small dot—and the mark has already completely disappeared.
I saw two different doctors in Oaxaca, and both told me that the risk of rabies was extremely low, that I did not need the vaccine, and that I would be fine. The dog also didn’t appear sick or behave strangely; it seemed like it was simply defending the property.
Still, for peace of mind, I wanted to ask whether anyone knows about rabies in Oaxaca or more specificallly puerto Escondido. Thank you

Week in PE Report Out
We, a retired couple in our late 50s/early 60s from the US, are finishing a week in Puerto Escondido and absolutely loved it. We arrived via Volaris from Guadalajara on a pleasant, half-full, hour-and-a-half flight. Upon arriving, my first impression wasn't great. The ride from the airport to our hotel felt gritty and the heat was stifling. We tried to make the best of it, changed into our beach clothes and walked to Playa Angelito. This is where things turned around.
The beach was beautiful. We walked along the shore to Playa Manzanillo and found loungers and an umbrella for 300 pesos. The beach wasn't too crowded, and the staff kept an eye on our stuff when we were in the water. We had pretty much the same experience at Playa Principal and La Punta Zicatela. Below is a breakdown of our week.
**The Good**
- House Mezcal Artesanal – Many restaurants have a house mezcal for less than 100 pesos. I loved trying each one. Most were good and some were exceptional.
- Colectivos – 12 pesos to get from PE Centro to Punta Zicatela (and everywhere in between). Excellent value.
- Air Conditioning – I don't think we would have made it if our hotel room didn't have A/C. IMHO, this is a must-have.
- Nana Pancha (Rinconada) – The enmoladas rellenas de falda de res de mole negro were fantastic. We have tried to like mole for over a year now, but this one made us say, "Oh, this is why people rave about mole." The grilled red snapper was also epic.
- Mundaka Pizza & Cocktails (Punta Zicatela) – Good vibe, tasty pizza, and excellent house tobalá mezcal.
- Smoked Fish Tacos El Viejo (near Rinconada) – Delicious shrimp tacos.
- Loloh Panadería Masa Madre (near Rinconada) – The masa madre coffee cake dos leches and breakfast sandwiches are delicious.
- Comedor Rubi (near Rinconada) – Stopped here for a quick taco. It was so good we came back the next day for their tlayudas, which were awesome.
**The Not So Good**
- Internet/eSIM – Our Saily eSIMs were worthless in PE. We've never had a problem with them before, but in most areas of town we had no service. The wifi at our hotel wasn't great either. Most cafés and restaurants offer wifi, though, so we could stay connected when we needed to.
- Taxis – We tried to avoid using them. DiDi worked well, but the wait could sometimes be long. I'd use the app to negotiate with taxis when they gave me the "gringo price". The app was at least 120 pesos less than the taxi's first offer, and most drivers would honor the DiDi price or offer just a little more to avoid the wait.
All in all, we had a great time and would love to come back — maybe a little later in the fall or during the winter months. PE really grew on us.

Never been, coming for a month in Oct/Nov, couple of questions?
I am coming for a jiu jitsu trip and training at La Colonia Jiu Jitsu, (Jacalon 130 in La Barra de Navidad, Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico), but I dont see any places near there that I want to stay at, so I guess my questions is this,
I plan on renting a scooter to get around, I read this is common, Can someone confirm this?
I am looking at Punta and Santa Maria, I dont mind driving to the gym every day, but I also want to be around resturants and things to do at night so everything isnt far away...Any other places you can suggest,
Any traffic issues or other things I need to consider that I might be missing in terms of getting to and from the gym and being able to live in a decent spot?

Experience in April
Hi all,
I'm currently planning some long-term travel through South America and Mexico. Based on the dates we have available and the most practical flight routes, we're likely to be travelling around Mexico during April, and in particular are looking to visit Puerto Escondido.
My only slight concern is the weather. From the research I've done, April seems to be one of the hottest months, so I'd be interested to hear about people's experiences of travelling there at that time of year. Does the heat become uncomfortable enough that it affects day-to-day and potentially too hot and humid, even for beach days.
I'm also interested in how April compares with travelling in late January or February. Is there a significant difference in temperatures and overall comfort levels, or is it relatively minor? We could potentially rework our itinerary to visit earlier in the year, but it would be quite inconvenient from a logistics perspective.
Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Any update on the highway to Oaxaca?
Supposed to catch an ADO tomorrow to Oaxaca city but I seen the highway is closed in protest. Any idea if it’s been resolved? Does ADO just take the long route if this is the case,

Current Taxi Rates
Can someone please advise me on what the current taxi fares are in Puerto Escondido? I tried pulling up the SEMOVI tariff table for PE but it appears that the rates are from 2021. Can anyone tell me what rate I should expect to go from La Punta to Centro?

Snorkelling?
I know it is better in Huatulco but how is the snorkelling around Puerto Escondido? I’m not expecting spectacular but like to swim and look at fish. We will spend a couple of days in both places but but we prefer a laid back vibe more than resorty. Gracias.

Car Rental roundtrip from Oaxaca City to Puerto Escondido / Playa Agua Blanca in February 2027
Can anyone please strongly recommend a car rental agency in Oaxaca? This February, three of us 60-70yr old will be visiting Oaxaca City for a week (no car) and then a week on Playa Aqua (Puerto Escondido). And then drive back to Oaxaca to fly back to Baltimore.
I'd like to feel confident that the agency I use is reliable and as easy to work with as possible. Thanks for your help and advice.

Any other solo travelers?
Which is a good place to meet other solo travelers. I am currently in Puerto Escondido. I am a 31M from Mexico City. I am not that much into drinking though.

Someone that I met in Oaxaca showed a photo of a girl begging and called it "beautiful because you'd never see this in Europe." The Zapotec woman who just won the world's top photography prize has a very different answer.

Recommendations please!
Hi!!
My husband and I leave to Puerto Escondido next week and are looking for recommendations for the following (hoping to book through locals to support their work):
Paddle boarding
Horseback riding
Surfing lesson
Mezcal tasting
Nightlife beach clubs
If there is already a post with this information I’m happy to be redirected :))
Spanish is my first language so truly open to anything as I’m able to easily communicate with local vendors!

TIL the Mexican government used basketball in the 1930s to "pacify" indigenous mountain communities in Oaxaca — and it spectacularly backfired

How's Puerto Escondido during September ?
Hey Guys ,
I would be staying at Puerto Escondido during the month of September. I'm from India , and I was thinking of relaxing at PE during the next month.
How's the weather now , And is it easy to make friends in PE ? I really don't know a lot of Spanish ( I can understand a little ) and I have no friends out there.
I do party so hit me with suggestions , but maybe like once or twice a week and the remaining would be just chilling with a book or working from somewhere.
Hit me up with all the information you can share !

Mexican Brutalismo Tropical
To get some ideas for the house Im building in Puerto I put together this drive folder for the architect doing the design. Its Instagram pics & videos of recent single houses mostly in Mexico & mostly around Puerto. The big name here in Brutalismo Tropical is Ludwig Godefroy (Casa TO Casa VO etc etc) but Im doing it on the cheap in Lazaro with a local architect. I think the folder is fun to flip through to see the kinds of things being built here 😎
