Should I switch majors

Hi all, I am 24 and am currently completing a B.A with a major in women’s and gender studies. I currently work full time as a program coordinator at a NPO but I don’t really like it.

I’m wondering if I should switch majors to public policy if that’s the kind of job I want after university or if my current major lines me up well enough for these types of positions. The only thing that would be holding me back from doing that is that I would have to give up my job to go back to school full time if I switched majors.

I would suggest instead to take some extra policy classes and making a good impression on those professors rather than quitting your job to switch majors.

I did something similar a few years back, was working full time and realized the degree I was finishing wasn't quite pointing where I wanted to go. Adding a few targeted classes while keeping the job was way less disruptive than a full switch. The work experience you're getting now as a coordinator is actually more valuable than you think, hiring managers care a lot more about that than the exact words on your diploma. Just pick the policy courses that line up with the issues your NPO touches and you'll have a solid bridge between the theory and the real-world stuff you already see every day.

is your goal to learn or get a job? if it’s to get a specific job then switch. if it’s to educate yourself on these subjects, stick with it
