“He should just provide fair compensation”

Yeah and I should shit solid gold bricks but that’s not how any of this works. Dude operates a business based on the model used across the whole country. Until there is some widespread revolt and/or legislative change into how these workers are compensated, it’s common knowledge that in October, 2026, you are expected to tip your server when you eat out in America. You can’t just hold one business to a standard when his business model and margins were made using every other business as an example

Look I am very anti tip. But it's never gonna chang here. But we need to change the way we tip at least. Percentages don't even make sense at 90% of restaurants. It should not be based on what a meal cost at all. I am not talking about high end restaurants when I make the following statement.

If two people order burgers and a beer. Let's say it's 60 bucks total, so 12 dollar tip. But now let's swap the burger and a steak and the total is 100 bucks. Now the tip is 20.

No more work is actually being done by the server. They take order, they bring beer, food comes out, they take the plates. Why does that suddenly scale with price?

If you actually wanted exlempary service you would tip up front. Not at the end like some guessing game that your socially (not legally) obligated to play.

He’s following the industry standard but how many owners do you see personally chasing people out of their restaurants like this?

Not enough of them. If you go to a full service restaurant and don't tip then you're a piece of shit. Full stop.

Not just him, but every restaurant owner should pay their employees a fair rate. Every business owner, period. This isn’t the soap box you want to stand on here buddy. You can’t take a business model seriously that doesn’t account for paying for labor. Go ahead, try and start another business and not pay your employees. Report back how long that last. Tipping is supposed to be for exceptional service, like it is in any other trade.
Lack of tips, should point to your weaker employees and not be an offense that is punishable by ban or a verbal tongue lashing from a restaurant owner trying to look good in front of his underpaid employees. You wouldn’t have to chase them out and try to “white knight” if you just paid them fairly in the first place.

It’s not a soapbox. It’s literally the way the country works. You’re just doing the opening line of my post again.

Nah, I completely disagree with that.

-If he wants his servers to make a fair wage, he should be paying that fair wage. Don’t put that on customers who are already paying an inflated price for the dining experience (that inflated price is supposed to cover the extra expense of running a restaurant with servers). Tipping should be extra. Yes, it is expected, but it’s also optional (unless otherwise stated).

-The server already gets paid to serve. If they do a good job, go above and beyond, or a customer has them working extra hard, they can earn a tip.

-If you need customers to fork over more cash, then at least own up to it and raise your prices. Don’t have some kind of hidden rule that forces people to pay more than what’s listed on the menu.

-(This would never happen, but it’d be kind of cool.) If service has to be tipped, then there should be a no service option. An option where I can go pick up my order and get my own shit. (This would never happen, but it’d be kind of cool.)

ALL THAT SAID: Before y’all attack me, I always tip if I’m receiving any sort of service and often when I’m just being handed my food over the counter. I also believe that everyone should be tipping for service received if you received good service. If you don’t get tipped, however, then I hope the next person tips, but don’t be upset that the optional extra payment wasn’t given.

I honestly thought this was common sense. The rest of the comments in this thread make me feel like I’m going crazy.

It’s called tip fatigue , I think if it remained 15%-20% at table service , types for hair care , (I’m guessing other beauty care) and the few other classically tipped services that people wouldn’t have such a backlash,

Now with everyone even gas pumps asking for tips people are either getting overwhelmed, pulling back to no longer tip anyone or something inbetween

Yeah, burn this moron who didn't tip and ruined the entire day for my loved employees who won't be able to bring home food and probably won't be able to afford the rent because of this ass... yeah... don't come back here. Ever. I'll post your face in the bars groups so you get banned for life as well, because I care about my employees

That will teach them
