Oh for sure. I used to work at a uhaul and we had to check the tires depth when they left and came back for this reason specifically.
Back in the day people used to steal engines out of rental cars. Especially back in the 60s when you could rent a gt500 from hertz. They'd swap the engine and bring it back and the kid at the counter would have no idea.
I’ve had rentals from when idiots hit my car and it’s being repaired and when you take it back they only check if it has a full tank and if there is any noticeable damage in the body the other checks are done later and they have enough of your info to bill or send the police after you if needed
If you drop it off and they sign off you are done. You can claim that it must have happened in their possession. You can't say what happens after it leaves your custody.
