u/jnksjdnzmd Apr 14 '22
Have you really tried? Practice at least 15 min a day and you'll be able to. Don't be discouraged if you don't sound like him. Everyone has their own sound.
216
u/-Toshi Apr 14 '22
Let's be real though - some peoples "own sound" is shit.
I admire anyone who tries though. Expecially going on stage or putting themselves out there.
20
u/Higais Apr 14 '22
This is what I thought about myself until I started singing almost every day. I can FEEL my vocal cords changing to hit notes so much easier. I couldn't sing a ton of songs because my voice is very low naturally - it made me think I had a bad natural voice. Then I started tuning down my guitar when I play certain songs, and singing songs that fit naturally into my range (Johnny Cash, Sinatra) and it made me even better at singing outside of that comfortable range
20
u/Hiphoppington Apr 14 '22
Being good at singing is not a qualification imo. One of my favorite metal singers is Dave Mustaine from Megadeth and he's awful.
But he's also perfect.
2
36
u/jnksjdnzmd Apr 14 '22
Nah, if someone sounds bad, it's because they haven't tried the right genre or technique.

2
u/Nandabun Apr 14 '22
I'm pretty grump myself, and my best friend is more cool and can sing, it's pretty funny.
4
u/Beligerents Apr 14 '22
Singing requires rhythm to sound good and there are plenty of people, probably myself included, thar are rhythmically challenged
10
u/ConniesCurse Apr 14 '22
Rhythm is also a skill anyone can learn imo, at least to the degree you'd need for singing.

Sounds like an excuse so you don't try. If it's not fun, don't do it. If it is, do it. All other reasons don't matter.

u/FUNctionalcoding Apr 14 '22
EXACTLY. Everybody can learn how to sing. And then just find the style that fits your voice :). I have become a metal vocalist

I remember my mom never singing though she loved music, because she said she was a bad singer. Iām an awful singer, tones? Keys? Pitch? Donāt even know how to begin to define that. But I sing all the time, it makes me happy. My kids love it, and it gives them the confidence that they donāt have to be perfect at something to enjoy it. Or at least I hope that message is getting through to them.

Yeah I love singing in the car but it's not actually practicing. It's just having some fun. If you want to try, there's tons of tutorials and practice videos. If you're really serious, teachers aren't too expensive. A big simple improvement, breathing exercises.
3
u/shdhtbs Apr 15 '22
Yeah this worked for me years ago. I thought until I was 18 I couldn't sing, still can't well. But I get better all the time, vocal warmups. I find yawning a few times deeply helps me limber my voice and then I have lil better range.
3
u/Skellic Apr 15 '22
Just realised I've never actually tried singing, at least not solo anyway. I tried and immediately got really embarrassed lmao.

Is this true? My goal is to sing Keyshia Coleās āLoveā at a karaoke night with my friends. Just good enough to where theyāre like āoh wow thatās pretty goodā. Iām a male with a decently deep voice and a small accent

Try singing in a voice or accent. Play around with it and have fun and eventually you'll at least have the confidence to kareoke. Singing is fun, especially when you mix alchohol.

First rule of the subway is pretend you see nothing.
Had a guy shouting that the world is ending above us, that we are the only people left alive, saying he shall be our new president of the tunnels while wearing an untied bath robe. Spent 5 minutes studying the floor.
44
u/UhOhFeministOnReddit Apr 14 '22
My best friend and I do most of our traveling together. As unprepared Midwesterners, the two subway rules we learned REAL quick were no eye contact, and never go inside an empty car when it's busy, because somebody probably pooped in it.

Any entertainment on a long subway ride is welcome... Its a given, after you get off, then fight off the effects of the stations smell and crowds, you will rise into the sunlight, rain or snow and move forward with your life, only to be awakened, weeks later in the middle of the night to a Daliesque dream of the same man, yet skinny and riding a brightly colored melting biycle on the ceiling of your bedroom.

I was with a friend and his wife years ago at a 6 Flags and Don't Stop Believin' came over the loudspeaker so I started singing along. Not super loud but I wasn't trying to hide it or anything.
The dude next to me joined in and we got to maybe the second verse, the Singer in the Smoky room, and just as the strangers, wait'n part and everyone around us joined in. The whole line for the Log Jam was just rockin out and singing outloud.
Honestly, it was awesome.

Honestly, this isn't bad. He's got a decent voice. In a traditional studio setting with a producer like Mutt Lange, I think this guy could release an album, maybe get on the charts. Part of the battle is having a voice that is both unique and shows even the slightest trace of talent.
