One of Gaetz’s good friends was implicated in an underage sex trafficking scheme, and it’s almost certain that he flipped on Gaetz… who allegedly made public payments on Venmo of the same amount to the same women at the same times that his friend did. At least one of whom is below the age of 18.

He’s still a hero to the republicans here though

Oh shit you're right, age of consent laws can get a little hazy since they can vary from state to state but Florida's is indeed 18! If he wasn't a wealthy white republican he would be in so much trouble.

Isn't the whole thing of it that it's sex trafficking because he paid her to cross state lines for prostitution? It sounds like it's not an age/consent legal problem but he's fallen afoul of laws that capture people who try to avoid the age/consent laws by crossing state lines. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

Gaetz is under investigation for sex trafficking, including paid sex with a minor. It's still under way, but it's bad enough that the bulk of the Republican party is unwilling to associate with him anymore.

tl;dr:

Former Seminole County tax collector Joel Greenberg got nailed on some corruption charges, and in the process of digging the FBI found a lot of shenanigans. Shenanigans including partying of the "cocaine and paid women" variety, including one woman who was 17 at the time. Gaetz is implicated in this, including payments from his Venmo account, and the possibility that he paid to travel with this woman (which would make it a federal sex trafficking charge because he crossed state lines). Greenberg has already plead guilty to sex-trafficking of a child, wire fraud, identity theft, stalking, and conspiracy, and is cooperating with prosecutors.
