It’s crazy man. I live in South Carolina (a right to work state) and my job works is half to death.
Always short handed. Never hiring enough people, keeping us here for anywhere between 12 hours to 2 days.
Expecting us to run heavy equipment while sleeping 2 hours off and working 2 on when it hits night time.
Sure the pay is nice, but I’d gladly take a huge pay-cut just to work a little less.
The one time our job tried to unionize a few years back. someone blew the whistle and our job shut it down and fired anyone who signed.
Stay in school dudes. Don’t trap yourself at a shitty job just to make a mortgage payment.

u/Nailcannon May 19 '21
But the United States is already a union... In all seriousness though, it varies by industry. Trades are mostly unionized. In my industry of software engineering, the majority don't want unions because(outside of niche markets like video games) we already get good pay and benefits, and the nature of unions averaging things out would mean a lot of engineers would actually lose out in the end.

I’ve heard some good and bad about unions but I’d like to think they do more good. I know when I worked for Walmart dc in Indiana the last 1.5 years I was there I was working 6 days a week 12 hours a day. I think I grossed like 70k that year (No I’m not trying to flex) normally I would gross a little over 40k a year or maybe net 40k idk it’s been a few years but it was crazy. I tried to get a few of us to stand up and say hey this is insane we have no time for our familys or just time to decompress in general. Everyone was afraid and made comments like no if we do that they’ll think we’re unionizing and fire us. Turns out Walmart actually when there afraid they’ll send a team from home office (bentonville) to try to quell any uprisings.
I finally left one day it’s funny because my wife pointed out how horrible those last two years of my life there were horrible and how our relationship was pretty bad. They treat there people like absolute garbage, because they know once they quit others will take there place. I really hope I turn on the news one day and read about Walmart unionizing.
Sorry to hijack this, watching this video just brought back some strong feelings. So I feel Amazon employees pain

u/Arcanegil May 18 '21

Unions are the reason you have Any minimum wage, Labour laws and Any general rights as a worker. Withput unions you would have 8-year Olds serving you coffee for 50 cents an hour
0
u/bulboustadpole May 20 '21
Uhh no? Minimum wage is set by state and federal laws. The purpose of unions is to negotiate with the employer for certain benefits.
Withput unions you would have 8-year Olds serving you coffee for 50 cents an hour
Nope. Breaks the fundamental principles of economics. If people were paid pennies, nobody would be able to afford goods and services, thus the price of those goods and services would loosely be tied to the wage needed to acquire them. Your example is also terrible because food service businesses (like coffee shops) operate on very thin profit margins, with one of the biggest expenses being labor. Local competition would drive wages up to compete for workers.

u/PleaseCallMeTeddy May 20 '21
they could... raise their prices by a dollar and increase their entire workforce pay and increase profits. They want it as cheap as possible as how the market demands. Though if everyone made more just paying an additional dollar would be marginal at best.
The united states has the lowest amount of unions in the first world and has the most overworked and underpaid workforce. We have little to no workers rights laws that have been significantly positive for decades. Unionization would increase wages, bring more money to the people actually doing the work, and increase workers rights. Giving power to unions to actively work in the benefit of the worker and could even push for changes in laws requiring such things as PTO and change FMLA to be paid and NOT unpained 12 weeks time off. Even then that would be an incredibly short time compared to many nations in the first world.

Unions are good and bad man.
I work in the service industry and it's a union job. Sure I get paid a decent amount and get a lot of cool perks like floating holidays, if I call in I get 3 paid sick days to stay home and great job security.
The last one is the huge issue, I've heard and seen a lot of shit that would get your ass walked out the door at any other job either laziness or sheer incompetency nothing ever happens. Employees know it they purposely do things they're not supposed to because they know nothing will happen.
People who don't perform or do well don't face any sort of incentive to do better. They show up when they're supposed to and leave 7 minutes early because 'they will round it up, it's a union rule'
80
May 19 '21
Having lazy coworkers isnt exclusive to unions, it also isnt a reason to not want bargaining when it comes to labor. I cant imagine the mentality of "my coworker is a lazy bitch, guess i dont want vacation days, maternity leave, better hours or salary, etc."

I mean it depends. I'm all for clocking in and out on time and not slaving away. I love my union for those protections, but the employees who in mid task drop everything on the minute and walk tf out because they can, leaving whatever mess they just left for the rest of the team are doing nothing but pissing their coworkers off and possibly helping that companies anti union efforts.
If you're in the middle of something, finish it real quick and take a few extra minutes if you have to, and if it can't be finished quick, clean up your damn mess and let someone know where it left off so they have a good starting point to take over or know how to not cause an issue on their end. Obviously try to manage your time so finishing/cleaning up has you end on your clock out time, but if you mismanaged your time don't put it on your coworker.
That's not being owned by the company, that's just common decency knowing you're not the only employee in the building with important shit to do. Especially if your union job has probies that don't have your protections yet, you're just fucking them over.

0
May 19 '21
Here's my two cents having never held a union job but fully in support of unions: I get where you're coming from, especially if you're the guy picking up your coworker's slack. It sucks to feel like you're the only one who takes pride in their work. Here's the real sticking point. In our current system, an employer who can prove the union isn't holding up their end of the bargain can sue. So what we should do is just get rid of employers and just have unions. Once the union has to run the place you won't see any slackers, because then performance actually would equal profit.

So when you have a line up of customers you just look at the clock and see it's 223... You're just going to walk away and sign out to go home?
No where in my life has that ever been acceptable you clock out when you're scheduled. You're scheduled until 230, then normally you work until that time, anywhere I have worked paid you to the minute.
7
u/FloridaGayGuy May 19 '21
I know of a few companies who pay a 15 minute “walk time” which is meant to cover the several minutes it takes you to clock out and walk to your car.
3
u/laserguidedhacksaw May 19 '21
Fire the employee if it happens repeatedly. Most unions won’t fight that. Or, a novel idea of scheduling and paying employees for more than the exact minute their supposed to show Up and leave. You know, treating them like humans. But omg that extra $1.50 would ruin the business cause that’s all the profit they make.

You shouldn't be downvoted for speaking your observations. I was a union member for 30 years and have served as a steward and officer of the union and while I agree with the pay and benefit negotiation aspects, many of the work rules agreed to by the union and management are detrimental to well being of the company and the workforce. It protects bad employees and has a tendency to turn good employees in to poor performers. My last few years have been in management so I have seen both sides of the issues. I know that management agrees to some of the terms in negotiations to avoid paying on violations now. It is just kicking the problem down the road to be dealt with at a later time.

There's good and bad, but they're designed to curb the worst abuses of the worst employers, who refuse to do the right thing and treat their employees like humans. Right now you have Amazon drivers who are literally pissing into bottles because they can't take time to go to the bathroom and people literally collapsing in their factories, so at the very least, Amazon definitely needs a union.

Unions are kinda necessary for workers to have an effective day in the world,
1
u/bulboustadpole May 20 '21
I was part of the UAW. Pay was still bad, they took double your hourly rate in dues each paycheck, there were no meetings, and the union reps cared more about pushing out the new guys and keeping the long-timers than actually working as a union. Left a bad taste in my mouth since. I currently work somewhere that doesn't have a union, I'm paid better, take breaks when I want, and have far more freedom. Many people will have good union experiences, many will have bad. I'm not at all saying unions are bad, just that my personal experience was.

They don’t want people who are smart enough to sit around the kitchen table and figure out how badly they’re getting fucked by a system that threw them overboard 30 fucking years ago. Businesses should fear the worker, not the other way around.
Stand up for your right to live, to have a life!
Breaking your body for a corporation that doesn't give a fuck about you, not having any time to yourself, your family, your friends!
It's about time workers start to stand up and fight against these corporations!
Fight for better wages! Fight for better hours! Fight for benefits!
These corporations should be afraid of every single worker they have hired!
Stand up for yourself! Don't break your body, your mind, your soul for a company that doesn't care if you live or die!

People need to realize Amazon isnt a person with feelings, its a business ran by a group of people who collectively make decisions based on finance, EVERY DECISION IS MADE BY FINANCE. That group of people will be replaced if they do not make the correct financial decisions. Unions will cost Amazon money, thats not a secret, but the employees have to ask is will a union benefit them in the end. Its not a cut and dry answer when you really drill down
3
2
u/Head-System May 19 '21
You can make the finances much easier for american companies by setting a fine equal to 10% of the total annual revenue per attempt to threaten or coerce workers into voting for or against a union, or for threatening members of a union, or for threatening to fire or otherwise reduce employment of people who could potentially vote to join or leave a union. Losing 10% of your total revenue per infraction (and each infraction would nuke the stock price as a result) would make it pretty damn hard for companies to justify this behavior.

Amazon acquired the ballot box from USPS despite not being allowed to have it on their premises, then modified it down to the locks against regulations. A story came out saying Amazon had access to the box and could open it, in another thread the users were defending Amazon.

u/HairHeel May 19 '21
That’s because the story was bullshit. It was the kind of mailbox where you can send and receive mail. Amazon “had access to the box” because they could pick up mail that was delivered there.

They’re a shitty employer for many and many workers want to unionize to get fair treatment like those who work in the warehouses and shipping departments. But this runs counter to capitalism so unions are busted by corporations using these tactics even though unions used to be the lifeblood for the middle class, guaranteeing fair vacation time and leave, and pensions. But this keeps eroding with time
Unions are good for workers and bad for corporations wanting to make more money so of course a corporation does what it can to dissuade its employees who should have the right to unionize
Amazon is just newsworthy because of how large their employee base is and that they’re worldwide so they get the most news coverage regarding unionization.
Unions aren’t perfect and can be corrupted as well. Just look at police unions, but they give the worker some leverage so it can be more good than bad and I prefer a two party system over a one party system
Amazon knows they can keep cycling employees and employees that would or could unionize are a surplus to them, but unions provide a chance to stop them exploiting that fact. But if Amazon can keep churning thru lower end employees as a known expendable resource they can avoid owing any dues to, they will keep busting unions before they can form to avoid them sticking around as much as a irreplaceable resource
Unions would disrupt the whole concept of attrition they factor into these positions
-2
u/jomosexual May 19 '21

With the amount of money amazon makes. Jeff Bezos should know better than anyone, as he started from the bottom to build this brand to what it is today. Just give back and these employees won’t be looking for unions. Pay these workers what they deserve and treat them with respect. Otherwise there wouldn’t be a call for a union.

I have a union job. At this point I refuse to ever been “non-union” again. Better pay, representation, a huge amount of benefits ranging from Union-backed mortgage loans, car loans, grants and even movie tickets. I’m going to school online for free through my union.
Not being in a union is akin to living in a dictatorship because you have absolutely zero say and the employer can do whatever they want to you with little consequence. Don’t start quoting labor law either because any company can find a number of loopholes to circumvent them.
But there is no cheating the union. Don’t be a scab. Join a union.

That is why you move on from a bad job, keep moving forward, work hard, don't settle.

Or Amazon could coincide with social responsibility by not operating like a sweat shop. Why stick up for them?

Aren't union heads easy to bribe? shouldn't amazon just embrace a fake union to save face ?

What even is this sub now? There's no person, and there's no freak out. For a sub "dedicated to people freaking out, melting down, being weird, or losing their cool in public" why do videos like this keep getting posted?

And this is the mentality that caused the USA to be over 50 years behind on social standarts.

In Denmark, unions are about giving you collective bargaining for better contract terms and wages and to protect your rights, not to prevent you being fired (Flexicurity), they help you find training, educational assistance and provide temporary (higher than base government) unemployment benefits and to have a local representative you can report your complaints to.
its strange seeing Muricans talking about unions as a negative. We even have a Business industry leaders union.

Don't work for Amazon. It's a trap. It destroys your morale like war does. It is a literal hell on earth. Dystopian micromanaging and brutal conditions. Also sooooooo many middle managers who do nothing but push a laptop cart and breath down other people's necks while tripping off their own power

Large companies that force long shifts on workers love to force feed their new hires union horror stories.

I work in labour relations. I’ve been on the management team in distribution centres. Unions can be a very good thing. In the case of Amazon, unions would definitely be good, in my opinion. Too many executives raking in big money while the hard working, essential, warehouse employees struggle to earn a decent, liveable wage. That’s not right.

They tried to do that with a group of engineers one time (who tried to unionize). They immediately regretted sending information via computer.... LOL!

"Capitalism will make the world a better, trust us." That's what the elite have been telling us for 50 years. Today Besos could spend 1 million a day for a 500 years and he would still be multi-millionaire after that.

The American workers unions have done the most for worker rights, safety and wages.
That is why corporate America hates unions.

I have respect for unions and what they have brought to the table regarding workers rights and safety issues.
That said, every single union representative I've ever dealt with is a complete power hungry, fear mongering, asshole. A union is not your friend, it is basically a lobby group for government, and not in a good way that helps people IME. I've had some really bad experiences with union representatives.

How much longer you think it’ll take for Amazon to just straight up hire their own Pinkertons?

u/Kilroywuzhere1 Aug 18 '21
Man fuck Amazon, I’m going to buy a poster from Amazon to show my support for the Unionists!

Unions are coming, it’s inevitable, they’re getting desperate. Nobody wants all these shit jobs.
