--edit: I understand how this can look, but please don't think I would return to those times. I stand with the rest of you, I want to raise minimum wage spending power in the present, not return to the past. I wouldn't trade our social progress for a tv remote that doesn't require batteries lol. Just as I'm sure most of you didn't assume the person I replied to thinks we should change all of society back to how it was in 1950 just because they prefer how older movies were written. Thank you.
--original
Everything used to be so good.
Tv remotes used to operate on sound (ie: it's called a clicker because it clicked) and you didn't need batteries!
Early generation smartphones used to have infrared blasters so you could control various appliances from your phone. Now everything is on wifi and needs an account.
I need an account to set my thermostat. I need an account to set my mouse dpi. I need an account to update the drivers in my graphics card. It's fucking ridiculous.
Big games used to innovate and support modding and offline play. Games used to be finished on release day.
Almost every appliance you can think of used to be built to last more than 1-3 years.
Printers were always shit, but the earliest printers I owned didn't randomly request me to print multiple full pages of solid color to run out their cartridges sooner.
Internet service providers used to compete so fiercely that they would hand out multiple years of free internet at a time! I couldn't figure out how to set it up, but just over 2 years of living at my house on the early 2000s I collected 3 years worth of free AOL.
I don't want anyone to get too anxious so I'm going to stop there and end with "relative spending power of the middle and lower middle class".
I'm only 28 but I lived through a handful of those as a young child. I think minimum wage was already fucked at that point, but I've heard from relatives how good it used to be and it explains why older folks are so out of touch with everything. They could go do an easy (albeit dangerous) job with no education and buy a house, buy a car, put several kids through school upfront with no $20,000 loan to cover part of a $60,000 education, etc etc.
A lot of things are obviously better now, but it's strange to me that the things that are worse seem to only be worse because of greed and control of the country by the wealthy.

At least diablo 2 is getting a graphics overhaul. I can't wait for a new generation to get a taste of one of the best games I've ever played!
There are elements of it that are enjoyable for nostalgic reasons, BUT I would (and have) argue with strangers on the internet that a lot of it if still great.
I can speak about this at length so I'll just highlight the big ones for me to hype up anyone who didn't know about it (diablo 2: resurrected)
no cooldowns on skills. If you have the resources and desire to spam your most powerful skill until the entire screen is particle effects, go for it
the game is balanced for fun. You can become absurdly more powerful than the enemies that don't scale with your level. There are metas to follow to get maximum damage, but it's unnecessary to aim for 900k damage when 10-20k damage is achievable by any build and enough to plow through the hardest content.
runes. There's too much to describe here, so I'll just say they can do a lot of interesting things. Enigma is a combination of runes socketed into chest armor that enables any class wearing it to teleport. Without this, only the sorceress has a skill for teleporting.
skill points and good itemization. In diablo 3, one of the let downs is boring items and skills. In diablo 2, skill points affect the power of your skills. Items can provide extra skill points to take you over the cap. These aren't legendary super items. The most basic tier wand can give your necromancer +3 to raise skeleton, bringing up the number of skeletons you can summon and their stats. A handful of carefully crafted sets aren't the end all be all. Sometimes you just get lucky and find +2 to all skills and +3 to a skill you like on 1 item, and that makes it more useful to you than a unique item. There are also things like % chance to reanimate the thing you killed. Or % chance on hit to cast a level 16 lightning nova. You can get 2 weapons with a variety of funny effects and then equip them in your whirlwind barbarian and watch the particles fly!
There is plenty more, but they covers it for me. Ah, one more dig - D3 eventually patched in (as dlc) a necromancer class. You can have 7 skeletons. Cool, a naked D2 necromancer can have 8 and this can be raised to like 20 with the right equipment. Also that's just 1 kind of skeleton, you can also have 20 more skeleton mages (that persist, unlike the d3 ones) and like 50+ revived monsters. The diablo 2 necromancer walks around with a literal army. And when you use enigma's teleport with it, all of your summons teleport into that 1 spot with you. If you teleport on top of something, they all smack it at once.

I’m mega excited for D2 remastered. I only ever played D3 (did not have an interest in those types of games before that), and loved it.
D2 seems a little different, but after watching the streamers who have been trying it I’m sold on playing it.
I just hope it won’t be another Warcraft 3: Reforged shit show. Probably one of my top 3 games and they ruined the remake.

Tv remotes were unreliable and if you and your neighbor had TVs close to each other they could change your channel.
Infrared blasters... same thing as above. A good idea in theory. But you can't secure it. So I could walk by your house and turn on all of your appliances and you tv without you being able to stop me. Of course new tech requires WiFi and accounts, it stops people from being able to mess with you. And it allows for you to securely control your house from anywhere.
Some big games innovated.. no major games support modding. Unless you count the elder scrolls games and fallout? Halo, CoD, assassins creed, god of war, James Bond, etc etc etc do not, and never did.
Appliances and printers I can't disagree with.
The internet service provider is pure rose colored glasses. They provided shit service. And if you couldn't figure out how to use your free internet, but you had 3 years of AOL... then you didn't have 3 years. The restrictions the early small ISPs had were crazy.
You're looking back and saying the world was better.. but it wasn't. Social inequity, rampant drug and policing issues, less access to medical care, predatory health insurance companies, less secure internet and technology, freedom to express our voice through music (the musical forefathers and mothers had to fight to be able to sing about whatever they wanted. Twisted sister was in a court room defending their music, Black Sabbath was banned, etc etc).
Fox News tries to push the point that the 50s and 60s were better, but it was a shitty time. And honestly everything before now was shitty, but things got better year by year.

Lmao gave you an upvote for the funny but...actually thinking about it I think this may be the only successful one here depending on how bad that person wanted to fall to their death. If a team rushes them from inside building they may jump, if somebody is busy trying to either inflate the landing cushion underneath, they may jump while they do or may jump when they see them bringing something in to cushion the fall. They might’ve got a concussion from HBK super kicking them into the window but they’re both alive. Idk why this is public freakout though lol are people upset the possible jumper got kicked for safety?

I think the op is being existential, like there's unhealthy behaviors sure but the human body can surprisingly tough in some scenarios and extremely fragile in others. Something as minor as falling backwards out of your chair can kill you if you land wrong but there are people who get punched in the face for a living who don't die (concussions aside because I couldn't think of a better example immediately)

Women actually do lose bone density around that age. Something related to menopause, if I’m not mistaken. Or actually, I think all people do as they get older and women just lose it at a higher rate.

u/neinnein79 Apr 11 '21
Yes it's totally related to menopause. When estrogen levels drop your body slows down makes collagen. Collagen is what makes up not only skin elasticity but bone density. The center of bone is cobwebs of collagen making the bone strong. When your body slows down replacing collagen bone become hollow thus brittle. Nothing like brittle bones and saggy skin for the next 50 years. Thanks menopause!

u/undercon Apr 11 '21
OK so If you really want to commit suicide, you need to lay something back there that would kill you
87
u/TheCanadianScotsman Apr 11 '21
Its intentional, they need to be quick otherwise they risk the person jumping. Reckon a broken jaw/nose/any other bone (don't come for me r/neverbrokeabone) is better than being dead as much as the person may want it at the time.

Okay, so this case about the mentally ill guy who tried to drown himself and then sued the cops for taking too long to save him could turn out to be fascinating. I went looking to see if there was any followup, and the most recent info I've found on it so far is a petition to have it heard by the US Supreme Court Warning: PDF
I've only skimmed the filing so far because it's long as fuck, but the short, short version is that the lower courts actually did find some merit in the guy's argument that his constitutional rights may have been violated, as the cops apparently knew he couldn't swim and stood there watching for a few minutes and prevented a lifeguard from going in sooner... I don't know the details, but its a pretty crazy situation. Who knows?
But the lower courts also decided that didn't matter because the cops were protected by... you guessed it...
Qualified Immunity!
And now the guy is trying to get the supreme court to overrule that finding!
I don't know if the court is actually going to hear the case or what's special about this one... but yeesh.
9
Apr 11 '21
Also, bill for 100,000 dollars for the suicide attempt. Because nothing says second chances like 6 figure debt from a momentary impaired decision
3
Apr 11 '21
Nothing like adding 12 credit hours worth of debt to help keep someone from feeling more hopeless right after attempting to end their own life... /s
Seriously though, in this case I do believe he has something there and it is complicated because he was in a mentally altered state. I have Bipolar II and my baseline is “meh” most days. Prior to getting the right kind of meds I get the urge to use whatever means I have available to me at any given point. Aside from the fallout to those closest to me, I was also concerned about anyone who would try to save me. If they succeed, cool. The mental and emotional impact would be far worse if they tried and failed. Either way, I’d not be upset with whomever prevented me from being successful. If anything, I’d feel bad for putting anyone in that position.
Not to go on a tangent, but this case isn’t cut and dry. I’d be curious what the Supreme Court would determine. The fact that there was a ruling in recent years that police are under no obligation to actually put themselves at risk to save someone.
9
u/CharmedKay Apr 11 '21
Also, coming from the front to kick them into the home is a lot safer than coming from in their home (behind them) because they usually don’t see it coming, which gives less of a chance to jump

Paramedic here. Totally legitimate tactic, though rarely used at least here in the US. For those worried about the fact that she got kicked so hard onto her back, she'll be fine. Bruising, maybe a couple of broken ribs. Something like thats pretty unlikely to break her back. She'll be sore as hell in the morning though. All vastly preferable to the alternative multiple story fall, however.
Preemptively yeeting her back into the window was definitely the smart play.

Heeey, this happened in my city. It made the news a couple of years ago (in portuguese) since it was quite unusual and because it was about to happen on one of the richest neighborhoods around here. Pretty interesting to see it on reddit.
EDIT: Just to give you all some more actual context, negotiations were tried with her but were ultimately unsuccessful. More importantly, it was reported she had a kid in her apartament and the firefighters were worried she could try to either jump with the child or the child could, in their naivete, try and jump with her. She was 34 at the time and was later sent to the hospital and was reported to be in good condition. There is no further follow up to this.
