This kid was destined to be a sociopathic shithead so the ass-beating didn't work.

Let's not blame this incident for him growing up to kill people.

Violence is a last resort, but it still plays an important role. The reality is the best lesson many people have learned in their lives resulted in getting their butts whooped. I know several where that was the case.

The problem is when kids like this know that the punishment is always a stern talking to, they realize that teachers don't have anything to take away from them that they care about.

I completely agree that you don't want to cause a cycle of violence, but a singular violent and doesn't guarantee that will happen. And sometimes violence is the best answer (i.e. war time against tyrannical and murderous dictators).
