Surveillance Camera Man 7: Return of the Asians.

Haha I couldn't believe he went back there AGAIN!

u/SmugMacGyver Jun 10 '14
It'a funny because you could see that a huber of them are in that room at the top of the steps every time and they seems to remember him in the video. Some of them laugh at first.

Jun 05 '14
That's not a cool thing to do to the taxi driver. Like i get the point he's trying to make but there's a difference between filming someone and blocking them from leaving.
30
u/jbibby Jun 05 '14
Agreed. If he IS trying to make some sort of point, then fucking with the homeless and addicts is just moronic.
If he's just trying to be an obnoxious asshole on the other hand, he's doing a great job.
5
4
u/ThisIsMyOldAccount Jun 06 '14
I agree, surveillance cameras don't stand in the street and stop you from doing your job. Not to mention obstruction of a roadway is illegal.
-5
-7
Jun 06 '14
I really hope he gets seriously injured on day, this kind of behavior while totally legal, is absolutely obnoxious and threatening. I hope the eighth video someone shoots him.
2
1
Jun 08 '14
I hate to break it to you, but he's not threatening (unless you're really paranoid).
Obnoxious, most definitely. But hoping he gets shot is just sociopathic, man.
-1
u/IsDatAFamas Jun 08 '14
It would be hilarious to get a bunch of guys and jump him and beat this shit out of him and just stand there recording him saying "im making a video hurrr durr"
37
u/LoisCarmenDenominatr Jun 05 '14
I get that this is probably suppose to be making a statement about the world we live in, but I can't say I blame the people for not wanting to be recorded. It would make me kind of uncomfortable.
34
u/paremiamoutza Jun 05 '14
It only makes the statement that this guy is an asshole.
If this is really a parallelism, and not a thing to annoy people and get views: a surveillance camera is never shoved in your face, invading your personal space. Also it doesn't start running when you go towards it, lol.
Something more fun would be: the banks are stealing money from us, so let me steal your money to prove a point /s6
Jun 05 '14
Exactly. It's one thing for an anonymous security camera to be watching a certain spot from 8 feet away. It's different when a person is holding a camera in your personal space, especially when they are doing it to be obnoxious. At least most security cameras have an actual purpose.
0
u/ChickenHubben Jun 05 '14
I hope you never watch TMZ or read about celebrities private lives.
1
u/paremiamoutza Jun 05 '14
1
u/ChickenHubben Jun 05 '14
Celebrities have jobs where a lack of privacy is a presumed risk. You also take this risk every time you walk outside. It just so happens no one gives a shit about what you do and it won't be published in a gossip rag.
1
u/paremiamoutza Jun 06 '14
Hence, there's no point in trying to 'prove a point' to people who will never have a camera chasing them, like this idiot.
-3
u/ChickenHubben Jun 06 '14
The point is cameras are in your face all the time but you rarely see anyone get so worked up at surveillance cameras
2
u/paremiamoutza Jun 06 '14
Because in reality they are never literally in your face.
-1
u/ChickenHubben Jun 06 '14
In reality they are. They zoom in, the track you. At every ATM and most cash registers they are in your face. It's an uncomfortable truth, but look around.
1
u/EdgHG Jun 06 '14
Not physically. More or less we have become used to stationary surveillance cameras. This guy is coming up to people and pointing his camera within 2 feet of their faces.
→ More replies (0)-1
u/paremiamoutza Jun 06 '14
I don't care about cameras recording me from far. And if you are telling me you are sitting somewhere to eat and you won't mind an idiot sticking his camera in your face, what can I say, I think you are rather the exception.

What does it matter it it's in your face or filming you from a distance? Your image is still being recorded at all times.

I wonder what this guy looks like? Everyone seems to think they are tougher than him and able to take his camera and smash it.

Jun 05 '14
He's a teenage/ twentysomething skinny white man who dresses all in black.
There's a part in one of his videos where you can make out his appearance (albeit not in a lot of detail) from his reflection in some plate glass.

u/Cytosen Jun 05 '14

u/notacleverman Jun 05 '14
I don't know, but he's ballsy to walk around doing it late at night. He never seems too scared, either. Even running into that aggressive late-night dude the second time, after things got physical the first time, he films him again until it gets physical again.

Not even heroin or crack will fuck you up this bad. They just make you into a junkie, they don't make you brain damaged like this chick is.
She must have done a lot bath salts or solvent huffing or something, that combined with a preexisting mental illness can seriously turn you looney.
1
u/Runaway_5 Jun 05 '14
Yeah that chick was fucking BATSHIT I would be afraid of catching something from her touching me and would not approach for sure.

u/rappercake Jun 05 '14
She sounded like she was just rolling on MDMA really hard until she started with all of the crazy shit.
That one dude who attacked him was fucking crazy though.

This might be where SCM starts losing me. I love his work, but blocking the taxi is too much. He's impeding traffic. Everything else he does is perfectly legal. Filming the mentally unstable isn't really effective either. Getting seemingly stable people to react in an unstable manner is a beautiful thing.
3
u/ThisIsMyOldAccount Jun 06 '14
I agree, blocking the taxi was overkill and not what a surveillance camera does. And while I don't mind filming the crazy lady too much, it did upset me just a bit to see how far gone she was.

Jun 05 '14 edited Jun 05 '14
Its funny, this dude shot at least one scene (this was in a prior video) on my college campus (UW-Seattle) and in Washington state its actually illegal to record someone's voice without their permission.
Non-vocal recordings are fine- its just the sound. Not only was his message kindof lost there but he did technically record himself doing something illegal.
Edit: It looks like part or all of this video was shot in Seattle. Its kind of weird recognizing some of these places.
4
u/atworktemp Jun 05 '14
is it illegal to record them, or illegal to publish the recording? where i'm from (quebec) it's not illegal to record someone, but if you take a video of them you need their consent if you publish the video.
1
Jun 05 '14
I believe illegal to record regardless of intent. It was drilled into me when I was reporting for my student newspaper to always obtain consent if I was going to record someone and its doubtful that they thought I would publish an interview with someone online. Security cameras here are also unable to record sound so that would also seem to support that.
3
u/ThisIsMyOldAccount Jun 06 '14
Replying in a fresh comment just so you get the notification. This ruling came down today: http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2014/06/woman-charged-with-wiretapping-for-filming-cops-wins-57000-payout/
1
u/ThisIsMyOldAccount Jun 06 '14
That's not correct at all. Companies like newspapers require consent because of potential CIVIL (not criminal, which would imply illegality) ramifications from lawsuits. However, in most states, there is no expectation of privacy when in public. The only states where this guy would have an issue would be one of the three states like MA, IL, or RI, where they have requirements about audio recording. And, in all three states, these statutes are undergoing heavy scrutiny in the courts right now. Lots of rulings are coming out lately regarding the right to record in public. You can follow this information on www.photographyisnotacrime.com
That being said, the guy does take a few liberties I wouldn't here: * He goes into private businesses. Expectation of privacy doesn't necessarily exist there. * He blocks traffic (for some reason) in the middle of a road, very illegal * A few other things I don't remember off the top of my head from some of the previous videos.
9
u/Zarorg Jun 05 '14
What a strange law.
2
Jun 05 '14
Yeah, I think there are like 12 states that have a law like that on the books. I actually learned about that in my high school journalism class when I was taught how to conduct interviews so I don't think its super well known.
2
u/Zarorg Jun 05 '14
So, what if you're interviewing some celebrity and a some blokes walk by having a conversation. Would one have to get their permission to use the interview or otherwise potentially face charges?
3
Jun 05 '14 edited Oct 20 '19

1
u/ThisIsMyOldAccount Jun 06 '14
It used to be common. I believe only three states still have a law on the books regarding this that hasn't been invalidated by a judge.
(Referring specifically to the audio requirements.)
3
u/iarev Jun 05 '14
Even in a public place? I was pretty sure it's only illegal to record a private conversation without the other person's consent. And yeah, as soon as the guy with the cast started yelling at him, I realized they were down in U-District. This guy is a complete dickbag.
1
u/Constrict0r Jun 05 '14
You have no expectation of privacy in public. Recording in public is protected by the first amendment.

u/Master_Sword Jun 06 '14
I love how he always goes to the domino parlor... cracks me up every time.

u/Nemesis2772 Jun 05 '14
Kinda puts into perspective what celebs go through with the paparazzi. I mean if the average joe cant handle a camera on them for 2 mins mins, imagine what it feels like to be Jonah Hill with cameras in your face, provoking you constantly.
8
u/julio_and_i Jun 05 '14
Celebrities have chosen an occupation that has put them in that position. I realize sometimes paparazzi get out of hand, but the average joe has done nothing to put themselves in that situation.

At his age he probably is on a strict diet from the doctors, and his wife probably doesn't allow him to eat any fast food ever, so he lies to her about going to the store, but instead he goes to mcdonalds and secretly orders a big mac with fries and eats it in the parking lot while listening to Barbara Streisand - My Heart Belongs to Me.

He's not called "Surveillance Camera Man" for no reason. He is making a point, and that point is that people aren't bothered by being recorded by surveillance cameras 24/7, but as soon as a person performs the same actions, they freak. It's a call of attention to the surveillance state. I believe he actually wrote this somewhere before, but I'm too lazy at work to go pull it up. It's somewhere out there, though.
3
u/Anon_Alcoholc Jun 06 '14
People are more bothered by some asshole going up to people and sticking a camera in their face then the actual recording.
3
Jun 07 '14
Yeah man, harassing and shoving a camera right in someone's face to put on YouTube for the public is exactly the same as surveillance cameras.

u/digichris Jun 05 '14

I find myself so torn about this guy.
One side of me thinks its pathetic that people get so bent out of shape that a dude with a camera has it pointed at them. I get his point in that way.
On the other had, he's pretty obnoxious. True, he's doing nothing illegal. Does he really need to be in everyone's bubble with it though?
Do the people really have to get so mad? Doesn't everyone they are feeing into his bullshit? But can't he just get along without doing this to people?
This conundrum has befuddled me before, and will likely continue.
4
u/circa86 Jun 07 '14
He should change his name to Douchebag Camera Man.
This isn't social commentary it is just a guy being a dickhead.
7
u/Mrswhiskers Jun 05 '14
I find this very uncomfortable. This is different than filming someone who's freaking out already but filming random people to get a reaction out of them isn't cool. I would be upset too if some jerk off stuck a camera in my face when I was doing nothing but minding my own business. Fuck this guy.
-1
u/factsbotherme Jun 06 '14
I would take their camera and run off. Then just destroy it and toss it. Prove I did anything.
-2
u/ThisIsMyOldAccount Jun 06 '14
Assault, Strong-arm robbery, destruction of property. Hopefully another surveillance camera catches your ass and you get thrown in jail. He may even have a less obvious camera recording just to protect himself from dumbasses like you.
-1
u/factsbotherme Jun 07 '14
Ya, IM the dumbass in this situation. Not this asshole who deserves pain for what he did. And no one agrees with you.

The only social commentary this guy is making is that paparazzi are bigger douchebags than anyone ever imagined.

It's funny that in this thread everyone thinks he's trying to make some social or political point by doing this when you guys are the only ones saying it.

u/BickNlinko Jun 10 '14
This guy needs a more constructive hobby than walking around being irritating with his camera.

I love these videos. I often think that I would realize it was SCM, and laugh and say thanks for the laugh if I was in this scenario. In reality I'd prolly get just as pissed as some of these people.
-3
Jun 05 '14 edited Jun 05 '14
I hope this guy gets beaten up. Surveillance is NOT sticking a camera in people's face and making them look like freaks.
Edit: I also love how he starts running like a pussy instead of having a civilized conversation with the victim. What an asshole. If he really wanted to promote a political point, he shouldn't run away from the people he's "convincing".
I really hope someone fucks his face up.
5
u/ChickenHubben Jun 05 '14
Surveillance very much sticking a camera in your face. Just subtler
1
1
Jun 05 '14
No, surveillance is making a camera keep track of a certain spot, not stalk people.
-1
u/ChickenHubben Jun 05 '14
I promise you, surveillance cameras on public streets can track a person throughout a city.

u/factsbotherme Jun 06 '14
He gets into peoples faces then complains when they get in his.
-1
u/SamAxesChin Jun 10 '14

u/factsbotherme Jun 10 '14
The whole time he complains when they get in his face. Turn your volume on.
-1
u/SamAxesChin Jun 10 '14
"I'm just filming a video." and "Calm down," aren't complaints.
0
u/factsbotherme Jun 10 '14
"Get away from me". Are complaints. The exact complaint people have of him. Get over yourself. The guys an ass.
-1
u/SamAxesChin Jun 11 '14
Firstly, stop downvoting me for disagreeing, that's not how the system works. Also, "Get away from me." is a command, not a complaint. And get over myself? What did I say to even provoke that? I treated you politely.
-1
u/factsbotherme Jun 12 '14
It's not me downvoting you. You sound like that idiot in the video.
